Dimmu Borgir To Re-Record Second Album

The following update has been posted at Dimmu Borgir's official web site:

"Everyone! We just wanted to inform you, what's up in the Dimmu camp as we're about to leave a very eventful year… There haven't been many updates here lately, and the main reason for this is because we've pretty much kept a low profile since we came home from Ozzfest. Thanks to Ozzy and Sharon for the opportunity they gave us playing the mainstage, everything ran smoothly and professional. The way it should be.

"In the upcoming year we will first and foremost work on material for the next album, plus playing a very few exclusively selected festival dates during summer, which will be advertised here later as soon they're confirmed.

"In the meantime some of us will be working on other projects as well, while Shagrath [vocals] and Silenoz [guitar] most likely also will re-record the 2nd album, 'Stormblåst' [originally released in 1996 via Cacophonous Records], sometime in 2005. More info as soon shit hits the fan!"

I've never been a fan of bands re-recording stuff, like when The Crown redid Crowned In Terror without Tomas Lindberg. So now Dimmu Borgir are planning on f***ing with their best album? No doubt they are planning to drown the beauty of the original work in OTT hyperblast drumming and Star Wars orchestral flourishes. Why does it need to be re-recorded? WHY?

Well I don't know how Dimmu's 2nd album sounded, but many of these bands had great albums in the 80s that just sounded like utter sh**, production-wise. I can hardly bring myself to listen to some of them in my car with a subwoofer becauseit's just pathestic compared to today's production. I loved that Testament re-recorded their first album. I liked that Iced Earth redid a bunch of their songs with Matt Barlow, although I don't care about who is singing as much as ancient production quality. Anthrax did both and rejuvenated my enjoyment for many of their best songs from the 80s as well. Megadeth's remasters are amazingly improved in quality as well. Now if only Slayer would do the same... I like their new sound and would love to hear some old stuff with their new sound and better production. So I wish Dimmu luck in the re-recording.

Stormblast's sound and tone is what makes the album. The guitars are tuned like the old guitarists of the 70s and the quality is dulled to give it a more deathly, evil atmosphere. Then again if you knew what black metal was you would be totaly p***ed off about them rerecording it.

Stormblast is the album which got me into many artists such as hendrix, led zepplin, and black sabbath (yes i liked dimmu borgir before any of these bands). The way they made the album and the settings of the guitars is what ultimatly made it a classic.

True - that can be the case. I do think Sabbath's 70's sound is an important part often missed by covers and remakes of their songs, so I can understand what you mean. But the production quality is still terrible, making me enjoy hearing them live more than anything.

I love the production on older stuff (particularly early Sabbath) much more than new stuff. Newer productions are all surgically clean and perfect, which I find often takes vitality out of a recording. Stormblast is an album which benefits from it's underproduction, in that it lends the album an atmosphere which can easily be lost in a glossy production. Maybe I'm anachronistic, but I don't think that stuff should be updated for now just because it's possible. Especially when it was perfect the first time. I'll still check it out, but I'll be VERY, VERY surprised if it measures up to the original.

I don't see how you can say that the production quality on Sabbath's prime albums is terrible, it's great! It's atmospheric, crusty and you can still hear everything that's going on on the record, nothing wrong there. But then again, I love the production on Darkthrone's unholy trinity....

Hail Emperor and Darkthrone for their "Necro" sounding earlier albums! We need more of that again. What has Black Metal turned into now? I hope to God they don't touch For All Tid, even though they've redone a couple songs on that one on GSG. (Hunnerkongens... and Raabjorn...), although I must say that I like the newer versions of both songs, but as one of the posts above noted, they've changed their sound dramatically with all the Symphonic Orchestrations and such. Are they doing all the songs on Stormblast, including Sorgens Kammer? What do they plan to do to change that? Well that's my 1 cent for now. Again, Hail Emperor and Darkthrone!

I don't understand that they are re-recording the album BUT it's dimmu and they are one of the best bands in the universe so I'll keep faith in that they will emprove the album.
But I must also say, perfection is not always perfect!

okay, this is the bottom line. They shouldn't touch stormbalst. Emperor4ever is right, "Hunnerkongens sorgsvarte ferd over steppene" and "Raabjorn speiler draugheimens skodde" was enough, it was cool just to see the better production value and to make an MCD but, a whole album is risky. they've basically changed their style twice after the "Devils Path" MCD and again after "Spirtitual Black Dimensions" you don't want to run the risk of making your fans think you are going one way musically, and going another way. Stormblast was like the Original Blackmetal sound, But Dimmu's sound has evolved into epic proportions.
