Former PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo's videotaped statement about the murder of bandmate "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, with whom he had feuded in the press in recent years, has been uploaded at the web site of Fuse's "Uranium". Watch the four-minute, 17-second clip at this location (Windows Media). A transcript of Anselmo's statement follows:
"People want my reaction to what happened.
"This is not about me. This is about Dimebag Darrell — purely Darrell. It's not about me or some motherfucking psycho that happened to destroy the most beautiful fucking person — one of my best friends in the world.
"It was the heavy metal goddamn media that destroyed PANTERA.
"This is about Darrell, my brother of 17 years, who... PANTERA's music changed people's lives, man. We weren't just some band. He was NOT just some guitar player.
"I wanna say... Bless his family and all of his close friends. And I never got a chance to say goodbye in the right way, and it kills me. And I'm so sorry. I wish to God I could have gone to his funeral, but I have to respect his family's wishes, and they do not want me there. I believe I belong there, but I understand completely.
"I'm so sorry to his bandmembers. I'm so sorry to the whole fucking world that loved Dimebag Darrell. Because let me tell you something: there was not one motherfucker like him.
"I'm so sorry to his family and everyone else who was just senselessly killed in Columbus, Ohio. It's a town I love. That's a town I've played a hundred times, goddamn it. I love that town. That's where Dimebag Darrell got killed.
"This is very unique for me, and that's all I know. Just bless his family, bless his friends. I love him like a brother loves a brother. Vinnie Paul, my other brother, I'm so sorry, I'm SO sorry.

Phil Anselmo is coming undone at the hands of drugs..Many have before, and many will continue to do so. Did the drug and alcohal binges the band was noted for effect the band? yes....for better and worse....The opening riff to "Walk" was created by a highly intoxicated Dimebag, do your research. Hi guys! Try to understand that nothing lasts for ever. It's unnecessary to speculate was it Phil's fault or not. The fact is that Pantera was in the end of its life span anyways. however the guys were in their mid-thirties so the best days of Pantera were behind beyond dispute.
About Phil's drug problem. Touring is never easy and takes lots of efforts. So Phil paid high price for he's devotion, but's that's the reason why we still love him. Phil: He f***ed up. Not by breaking away from Pantera, that was his option. No one could (can) force him into being in a band he was't interested in, but he just had to run his noice hole. Finaly, everyone should lay off Damageplan. The album was a good f***ing album. It's metal. Regardless of weather it was the style of metal you liked or not. Sure it wasn't Pantera, but hopefuly you knew that before you bought it. It wasn't Metallica's new mainstream attempt, it was real. And could anyone else have been placed as a singer. I do not doubt the sincerity of Phil's words. This is something that will haunt him for a while to come. While I can appreciate the way a good buzz or being high can augment an artist's "creative juices" I also can be fed up by the effects that prolonged or over-use of said chemicals have on the lives of those same artists. Yeah, being f***ed up may result in some interesting musical results. But when one can't turn it off and carry on with normal relations with friends/bandmates therein lies the problem. I manage a band, and when they perform, practice, or come up with new material nothing helps things along like a 18(+) pack of cold beer. But when one of our guitarists (my roomie) started playing shows wasted and drinking 24/7, everything went to sh**. I look at Phil and see a guy who's not truly in control. He's hurting and it's always easier to look without for blame than to look within. I'm not condemning him or the occassional use of drugs. But with him it's obviously more than occasional, recreational use. The feeling of loss is only going to make it worse. And trust me, there's nothing worse than the realization that you'll never be able to mend a broken bond because they died before you realized that it was all a bunch of crap. I hope, I pray that Phil can find some peace and find a way to escape the hold his current lifestyle has on him. I'd like to see hime come back strong and rocking hard again. R.I.P.
