Sources Report Keyboardist Mats Olausson Found Dead In Thailand

According to the Chaingrai Times, former Yngwie Malmsteen keyboardist Mats Olausson, best known for his work on albums such as "Eclipse," "Seventh Sign" and "Magnum Opus" was found dead in Thailand in a hotel room in downtown Rayong yesterday.

The report from the Chaingrai Times website reads in part: "Pol Maj Gen Chumphon Chanthachamrassil has reported that 54-year-old Swedish Musician Mats Johan Olausson, has been found dead inside a hotel room in downtown Rayong on Thursday afternoon."

It goes on to describe how Olausson was found: "'The body of Mr. Olausson was found on the floor at his Rayong hotel in tambon Tha Pradu,' Pol Maj Gen Chumphon Chanthachamrassil, Chief of Rayong Police, told the Bangkok Post.

"Mats Olausson, wore only shorts and there were seven empty bottles of whisky and empty cans of beer in the room.

"Pol Maj Gen Chumphon Chanthachamrassil said police found no traces of a struggle, and according to a Rayong Hospital Physician his death occurred within 24 hours of his body being found."

Hotel employee Withoon Boonprasert knocked on Olausson's door after he was in the room for several days and never noticed him coming out for meals and never paid for the room. Investigators initially believe that alcohol consumption might be a possible cause of his death, but his body was sent out for a post mortem to determine the actual cause.

Olausson also worked with bands such as Ark, Iron Mask, Lion's Share, Kamelot, Evil Masquerade and more.
