Neurosis To Celebrate 30th Anniversary At Roadburn
The Roadburn Festival is proud to announce that Neurosis will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary as headliner at the 2016 edition. Pioneering Yorkshire doom legends, Paradise Lost, will also headline Roadburn Festival on Thursday April 14, playing second album "Gothic" in its entirety. Roadburn Festival is further incredibly proud to announce that the 2016 curator will be musician, label owner and sonic pioneer, Lee Dorrian.
Neurosis comments: "To be invited to celebrate our 30th anniversary in Europe at Roadburn is an absolute honor. Roadburn is a treasured and unique event that embodies the spirit of open minded community and original, emotional heavy music. We are humbled to be a part of it again."
Paradise Lost's Nick Holmes adds: “As a young band we spent a good deal of time in the early 90’s driving around The Netherlands in a small transit van, living off chips with mayonnaise, drinking Chocomel and playing stuff from this album. 'Gothic' totally reminds me of those days, so if we were ever going to play the album in its entirety in 2016, it has to be in The Netherlands, and where better than the Roadburn Festival!!” More...

Paradise Lost Premieres New Music Video
U.K. legends Paradise Lost premiered the music video for the new track "Beneath Broken Earth" over at Terrorizer's website at this location (also in the player below). The song appears on the new album "The Plague Within," which is set to drop on June 1st (EU) and June 2nd (North America) via Century Media Records.
Guitarist Greg Mackintosh commented: "I fucking hate metal band performance videos, so when I got told that we needed to do one I was obviously annoyed but then came the idea to do a performance video of utter misery. The slowest song we have ever recorded. 'Beneath Broken Earth' is an utterly old school PARADISE LOST doom/death song, and doing a performance video with our miserable, old faces barely moving in a crappy, old basement was too much to resist. The director Ash has done a great job of capturing the somber mood and has managed to make a performance video we can actually be proud of."
The track list is:
1. No Hope in Sight (see lyric video here)
2. Terminal
3. An Eternity of Lies
4. Punishment Through Time
5. Beneath Broken Earth
6. Sacrifice the Flame
7. Victim of the Past
8. Flesh from Bone
9. Cry Out
10. Return to the Sun

Thrashback Thursday: Ember's Fire
Paradise Lost are truly one of the great names in British heavy metal. When thrash exploded in the eighties, the focus shifted away from British heavy metal for the most part, save for Iron Maiden, Saxon and some underground favourites, and towards the United States, where the majority of the big metal stars have come from since. But there were some innovative, trailblazing names back in the United Kingdom, a select company which along with Napalm Death and Carcass, Paradise Lost has assured themselves a place. The band have released some outstanding albums throughout their entire career, most of the particularly noteworthy coming in the early to mid nineties, two of which, "Gothic" and "Icon," gave a name to a sub-genre we still use today, gothic metal.
Though "Gothic" was released in 1991 and a third album, "Shades of God," came a year after, it was not until the release of "Icon" in 1993 that the term "gothic metal," really came into use, with Paradise Lost being the first band to use the phrase, for seemingly little more reason according to singer, Nick Holmes in a Kerrang! interview, than the fact that traces of Sisters of Mercy could be heard in their music. "Icon" was part of a string of classic Paradise Lost albums, arguably concluding with the following album, "Draconian Times," and as such featured some excellent songwriting, memorable music and continuing changes.
One of the best known songs from the album would probably be the record's opener, "Embers Fire," a wonderful, atmospheric piece which really shone the light on the gothic rock influences the group incorporated. The first few notes are chilling enough, before exploding into a cavernous vibe of darkness, complete with well placed lead guitar displays and a vocal performance which serves as much as a warning as it does a guide to head nodding. The cautionary tone of voice foreboding of an almost unforgettable chourus, featuring confrontational lyrics and a terrifying sense of claustrophobia. The atmosphere is the thing of nightmares, but the song is the stuff of dreams. More...
Paradise Lost Unveils Album Artwork
Returning with opus number fourteen, Paradise Lost's "The Plague Within" (set to be released June 1st in Europe, June 2nd in North America), was produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano at London's Orgone Studios.
The cover artwork was created by the Polish artist Zbigniew M. Bielak, best known in the musical realm for his record cover illustrations, which among others include meticulously handcrafted artworks of Watain, Ghost, and Entombed A.D. Zbigniew comments:
"Since their late 80's inception, through somber abrasiveness of their debut and harrowing tristesse of groundbreaking 'Gothic', the unparalleled icons of gloom, Paradise Lost grew deep into all things murky and dreadful in modern music. Let alone Duncan Fergado's artwork for their 'Lost Paradise' debut remains one of my fave covers, so having heard that with 'The Plague Within' the band harks back to days of old, was - to say the least - a thrilling incentive to pick up the commission.
"It was also a rare joy to see how preliminarily calm and reflective Arcimboldian artwork, kept becoming ever darker and more sinister past each of Nick's and Greg's scrutinies, to finally become what one can see on the actual cover. A portrait of hopeless decrepitude of mental illness - which is what 'The Plague Within' deals with thematically - where the tormented Sisyphus struggles to push his burden back up the slippery walls of a long frozen illusion."
Check out the artwork below, and see the band live on these dates:
May 29, 2015 - Rockavaria - Munich - Germany
May 30, 2015 - Der Ring - Grune Holle Rock - Nurburg - Germany

Paradise Lost Announces New Album
After taking a trip back in time with the "Tragic Illusion 25 (The Rarities)" collection and the last studio album "Tragic Idol" (reviewed here), it's now time for Paradise Lost's 14th studio album.
The album will be titled "The Plague Within" and will be released via Century Media Records on June 1st in Europe and June 2nd in North America.
Nick Holmes comments: "We wanted to approach the new album differently this time by embracing the band's VERY early days. We have written a very dark, yet melodic album, but this time many songs definitely have a death metal edge, which is something we haven't done for a long long time in Paradise Lost."
"The Plague Within" was produced and mixed by Jaimie Gomez Arellano from Orgone Studios in London. More details are forthcoming, and for now you can catch the band live on these dates:
Feb. 20 - Bergen, NO - Blastfest
July 18 - Bolkow, PL - Castle Party 2015
Aug. 15 - Dinkelsbühl, DE - Summer Breeze Open Air

Blastfest Announces Final Band Confirmations
The organizers of the Blastfest have checked in with the following announcement about final band confirmations:
"The lineup announcements had to come to an end eventually and Blastfest has now revealed the final three bands for the main lineup. But that’s not to say what you see on the burgeoning Blastfest poster is all that’s happening. No, no, no, there will be more!
"There’s already a lineup that would bring tears to the eyes of even the toughest metalhead with bands such as Demilich, Satyricon, Decapitated, Paradise Lost, At The Gates & Moonsorrow... and just last week a cruise up the Norwegian fjords with live bands was announced as part of the first days festivities. We still have to hear more… the clinics, the stand up comedy, the exhibitions, and lots more have yet to be revealed!
"For now, let’s leave this here… Sweden’s Uppsala upstarts, the black metal powerhouse, the entity of its own who released possibly their best work to date just last year with ‘The Hunt’, yes, the mighty Watain have been announced as another Blastfest 2015 headliner. The festival has also welcomed Austria’s sickest death metal export Schrinec Plays Pungent Stench and Bergens blackened deaththrash horde Grimfist." More...
Satyricon To Headline Blastfest
The organizers of the Blastfest have announced the first headlining act as none other than Satyricon, commenting:
"Yes, you did in fact read that right, Norway's Satyricon have been announced as the Saturday headliner at Blastfest.
"And that’s not all! The festival has also announced another 8 bands including 3 of the best from Britain, black metallers Winterfylleth, stoner doom hard rockers Orange Goblin and Falloch from Glasgow, Scotland.
"The latest announcement also includes Kall, Naer Mataron, Aspherium, Purple Hill Witch, all very much forces of reckoning in their respective fields. Blastfest has also booked its very first covers band, Bergen's very own Motörhead tribute act Bömbers, whom have been approved by Lemmy Kilmister himself.
"It will be cold and it will be extreme! Held in the beautiful city of Bergen, Blastfest is offering one of the, if not thee, finest extreme metal line-ups of 2015. Acts already announced include Paradise Lost, Decapitated, Primordial, Rotting Christ, Destruction and Asphyx with many more yet to be announced." More...

Bloodbath Reveals New Vocalist
Swedish supergroup Bloodbath is set to release its fourth album of supreme death metal, "Grand Morbid Funeral," on November 18th through Peaceville Records.
Following the departure of Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt and months of speculation and rumor, Metal Hammer U.K. has broken the news that the new vocalist will be Paradise Lost's Nick Holmes.
Blakkheim (guitar) commented, "Little did I expect to be working with the voice behind the death metal classic Lost Paradise, or the genre defining Gothic, and yet here we are decades later fulfilling another death metal dream. With his sinister and ominous vocal delivery, it's an absolute pleasure to make Old Nick the bell-ringer in Bloodbath's Grand Morbid Funeral!"
Jonas Renkse (bass) commented, "Ever since I got into Lost Paradise back in '90, Nick Holmes has been one of my favorite growling vocalists out there. He was always audible and articulate but still deep and definitely morbid. It is a great pleasure to work with him some 25 years later after I was introduced to his thunderous roar!"
"Grand Morbid Funeral" was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios and the City of Glass Studios in Stockholm, and mixed by David Castillo. More...
