Texas Independence Fest Day 1: BTBAM

Come and Take It Productions founded Texas Independence Fest in 2008 as a way to bring fans of heavy music together and to celebrate Texas pride. This was my second time attending the annual event held in Austin, Texas. Last year I covered sets by Behemoth, 1349, Wayne Static and more. The previous year consisted of only a day, while this year was expanded to three days. Several vendors offered their goods and services for sale. One of these was Gibroni’s Texitalican Kitchen, which offered Tex-Mex meets Italian sandwiches. More...

Bands Describe Their Personal Video Games

Arcade Sushi asked musicians from a variety of metal bands what would happen if a developer made a game specifically about them.

The full article includes answers from Sworn Enemy, Avatar, Red Fang, Lord Dying, Vintersorg, and more. Excerpts from the article follow:

The Atlas Moth

If The Atlas Moth had a video game it would be a survival horror game set at an immigration office. You'd have to sneak around solving puzzles and collecting paperwork, while avoiding being spotted and killed by border guards. It could be called Temporary Resident Evil.

Pet the Preacher

Our game would be called "Oh Sh--." It is a roleplaying game where you have to locate and capture a preacher who is on a rampage in a big, futuristic city. He is drunk, drugged and violent, raging around town comitting crimes and partying. You are the preacher's son, and every time you see him do something sick in the news or read about him in a newspaper, you go, "Oh sh--." Also, your character does not have any legs, so he can't catch the preacher, which also means you can't win the game. It will not be a seller.

The Ocean Gearing Up For Tour

The Ocean will be returning to North America this spring for the first time since last year's The Summer Slaughter Tour. In just over a month, the co-headline tour with Prosthetic Recording artist Scale the Summit begins.

The tour also includes special guests The Atlas Moth and Silver Snakes, and is being presented by Metal Sucks. The tour kicks off on Wednesday, March 5th in Seattle and wraps up on Sunday, March 30th in Cambridge, including two dates scheduled in Austin, TX for SXSW.

The Ocean will notice a change in the lineup from the last time around, as the band has added drummer Paul Seidel and guitarist Damian Murdoch to replace Luc Hess and Jona Nido, who departed the band on mutual terms late last year.

Two live videos have been made available from The Summer Slaughter Tour stop at the Rave in Milwaukee, WI. Check them out in the playlist below. The Ocean founder and guitarist Robin Staps comments on the videos:

"Summer Slaughter was the final US tour for Luc and Jona. These clips bring back good memories of our last summer together and a lot of crazy parties in parking lots across the country. Now I'm really looking forward to getting back to the US with our new guys. We've started rehearsing for our upcoming tours this week, and there's a really good vibe in the room. We're hungry to get out again, we've only been home for two months now but it already feels too long." More...

The Ocean To Tour With Scale The Summit

The Ocean will be returning to North America in 2014 for a co-headline run with Prosthetic Recording artist Scale the Summit and special guests The Atlas Moth and Silver Snakes, presented by Metal Sucks.

The tour kicks off on Wednesday, March 5th in Seattle and wraps up on Sunday, March 30th in Cambridge Mass., including two dates scheduled in Austin, TX for SXSW.

The Ocean's Robin Staps comments: "We're excited to return to the US with our first headline tour since 2008. A lot has happened in the meantime and the band is in a different place now, both musically as well as lineup-wise. We have played some bigger tours which came with a lot of compromises (short set, no production, rushed changeovers), so we are really happy that we're finally gonna be able to offer our Stateside fans and supporters a ‘full’ The Ocean set. We will be playing 'Pelagial' in its entirety most nights, the way it's been written and the way it's been meant to be performed live, as well as some 'Heliocentric', 'Anthropocentric' and 'Precambrian' tunes." Castle Denied Entry To Croatia

Castle has been out on tour with The Atlas Moth and Intronaut, and the band has now checked in with the following statement about being denied entry to Croatia:

"It was to our great regret that we were denied entry yesterday into Croatia at the Hungarian/Croatian border. Castle, along with the Atlas Moth and Intronaut tried for several hours and two different border crossings to gain entry to play the show but were denied finally.

"Even if we were to pay our way into the country in lieu of the paperwork needed they could not guarantee our equipment would have safe passage out of the country. We had been looking forward to this show more than any other on our European tour and are greatly pissed that we could not play for the metal maniacs from Zagreb and beyond. We hope to make it back next time.

"After spending the entire night driving around Croatia we've arrived in Italy for the show tonight at Taun in Fidenza, then on to Milan tomorrow..." More...

The Atlas Moth Posts "Your Calm Waters" Video

The Atlas Moth has teamed up with Scion A/V and MetalInsider to release a video for the track "Your Calm Waters" which is available for viewing here or in the player below. The clip was produced by Ryan Oliver of Deathblow Productions.

The Atlas Moth is also excited to announce its participation in this year's annual Record Store Day (April 21st). The band will be on-hand at Reckless Records in Chicago to perform live as well as to unveil a limited edition cassette release of two EPs ("Pray For Tides" and "One Amongst The Weed Fields"). These packages, issued by 5nakefork Records, come with green cassettes and are limited to 100 copies.

Frontman Stavros Giannopoulos comments, "I grew up in record stores, whether it was spending weekends scouring bins of vinyl when I was a kid or working in them throughout my teens, I think they're a really special way to shop for music that isn't going to be understood in 10, 20 years without things like RSD. We were asked by my favorite store in Chicago and we jumped at the opportunity. To make it a little more special, we are releasing the our first and out of print EP 'Pray for Tides' on cassette. On the B side will be the first physical release of our cover EP 'One Amongst The Weed Fields'." More...

SXSW 2012: Tone Def Touring Showcase with C.O.C.

After Pallbearer marched its audience toward a giant, gaping abyss at ND, I hustled a couple blocks west to Dirty Dog Bar. I learned an important lesson last year: If you don’t have a badge or wrist band, show up early to ensure you get into the venue. Last year, I showed up a band or two into the Metal Alliance show and missed Saint Vitus and Crowbar. Once the doors opened, the bar’s staff allowed a few badge and wrist-band holders in first and then opened the flood gates to everyone else.

The Atlas Moth did not bide its time in leisurely boredom like me. The Chicago-based space sludge masters were busy setting up for their second show in the span of a couple of hours. The group filled in the vacancy left by Rwake, who also bowed out of The Atlas Moth’s earlier show. Without their planetary light show that illuminated ND’s, The Atlas Moth’s performance was not as visually stunning. Their keyboards, effects and coarse tones updated the flowery texture of traditional psychedelia. Although they call Profound Lore home, The Atlas Moth could fit right in on Neurosis’ Neurot label. Doom Rules Pitchfork.com's SXSW Day Party at ND

South By Southwest 2012 maintained its tradition of billing a long list of heavy bands from an assortment of styles. Attendees began pouring in from every corner of the globe on the previous Friday to experience the interactive and film portion of the city-wide festival. Traditionally, at least during the last few years, the music segment starts five days later on Wednesday. Even though I attended a free show at Emo’s East featuring High on Fire, our coverage begins with Wednesday’s usual sonic circus.

Torn between the Thrasher/Converse Death Match Day Party at Scoot Inn and Pitchfork’s Show No Mercy show at ND, I opted for the Pitchfork show. The Thrasher show included legendary hardcore punk acts Fear and Cro-Mags as well as Nachtmystium, but I chose the doomed tones of Rwake, Pallbearer and Pilgrim at the Pitchfork.com show. More...
