Unearthing The Genre-Blending Metal Underground

The big name metal bands may get most of the spotlight, but Metallica and Black Sabbath are just the tip of the heavy iceberg. Every week we search out and share lesser known or unsigned acts that deserve to be heard by a wider audience. For today’s edition of Unearthing the Metal Underground you’ll get a dose of metal that bucks specific trends and expresses a heavy sound in unexpected ways.

For all the focus on rebellion and the disdain for conformity, heavy metal is undeniably a style of music that breaks down into very regimented genres – black metal, thrash, grindcore, etc. There tends to be a rigid confinement that bands are expected stay within when creating music, and stepping outside those boundaries either leads to derision by hordes of anonymous Internet posters, or the formation of yet another sub-genre.

While there’s a whole division of metal devoted to ignoring those boundaries (prog and avant-garde), some bands simply blur the lines between styles naturally and don’t easily fit in one recognizable category. Breaking the strictures set down by the worldwide conclave of elitist metalheads , these three bands start with a standardized form of metal and then head in unexpected directions that set them apart and make them unique.

Germ

The solo band from Tim Yatras of Austere and Woods of Desolation, Germ is a project that exudes a pure love of music, no matter where the sonic inspiration originally comes from. Starting out with a highly atmospheric form of black metal using totally indecipherable vocals, the act then blends in shades of rock and other mainstream elements, including the use of clean singing. Going even a step further, the new album “Wish” mixes in trance and electronic elements, at times sounding almost like an ‘80s movie soundtrack. In a nod to the black metal roots, there is a bit of a lo-fi aura filtering everything, and the harsh vocals screech out from the background, just barely breaking out of the surrounding noise.

What’s interesting about Germ is that its particular blend of these styles rarely sounds like anything else out there. The collision of trance and black metal sounds essentially nothing like Nachtmystium’s forays into similar territory, and it also never falls into any resembling the dance metal or dubstep collaborations that have become par for the course lately.

For a condensed look at this intriguing mixup, check out the four minute track “Asteroid of Sorrow” below, or for a longer float down the cosmic highway that is Germ, instead dive headfirst into the 10 minute sublime ride “An Overdose on Cosmic Galaxy.” To check out more from Germ, head over to the band’s Facebook profile.

Vintage Flesh Finishes Recording Sessions

New Hampshire black metal act Vintage Flesh has checked in with the following update about finishing the recording of a new album:

"I awoke this morning on what is the day after completion. My feelings on this day are something of a mystery to me. Feel drained but purged of all that had tormented me this entire summer. It seems as far back as the day we had begun this latest task, I had begun to experience a certain uneasey feeling. Today is the first day i can finally say to a large degree this feeling has been lifted.

"The demons have been exorcised and dealt with accordingly. All is recorded! The beast that dwelled with in us have been drawn out from the fire pits to be contained and confined on tape. May that precious tape see its way to mass CD Production! The experiences of the paranormal throughout this trying process have been subtle but many for all involved. I now have a sense of clarity and peace and it is not all derived from within. Much of it seems conveyed to me by out side forces that have been with us through out. This recording made a change in me and it will be some time yet before i can say what form this change has taken. Yesterday was the longest day of recording. Lets just say i returned home that night at three thirty in the morning. The hour of the night gaunts! Bizarre but though my girl was left wondering and wasn't very thrilled with me.

"It was a particularly drizzly and overcast day. Perfectly miserable day to end it on! Me and mat mostly worked alone. Hex appeared briefly but found it much to tedious a process to sit in on. What ever final doodlings he had in mind to do was left undone as he chose to leave very early in the day. It must not have been very important. We had no weed, and it was for the best. Shit kills my vocals and my stamina. More...

Vintage Flesh Posts New Recording Update

New Hampshire based black metal band Vintage Flesh has issued the following update about recording new material:

"The final toll of the bell, it is near. The operation was relocated one town over to Gemini's first recording studio space. It was a noted improvement in size and accommodations. A.C., mini fridge for the beer, wider floor plan, a view out into the unending woods to the north of NH. Fitting, very fitting for our meager needs.

"Everything done this past Sunday was strictly vocal work. It was much easier to find my inner Demonic character at this location. An appropriate vibe about the place. I would like to have created the entire album here. But most the vocals will be done here anyhow. Much was completed and we suspect the album could be completely recorded by next Sunday. Hex has some more build ups on guitar to complete that day as well.

"I am extremely anxious to escape the mental Hell that has taunted me this entire time. This past Sunday we had the company of other local Doom and B.M. band members Eric of 'Eternal Embrace' and Jeff of 'Frozen Forest'. You may want to do a search on them. Hex stayed home. I knew I was on the right vocal path, when every time I turned around after completing a vocal part, I turned to see a room full of gaping jaws and horns on high! We are going through the roof on this release as compared to the other. More...

Vintage Flesh Checks In With Recording Update

New Hampshire black metal act Vintage Flesh has checked in with the following update about recording new material:

"Well, two weeks have passed. We felt that not much was done the Sunday of two weeks ago so we skipped a blog. The Sunday two weeks ago was bogged down with technical problems and bad timing. We introduced magic mushrooms into the creative program but when we peeked we were still fucking around with equipment. Some keys were applied and I laid vocal to two songs. I had already crashed by that point and felt I had little vigor left to do them justice. By the next week we listened to the results and it turns out they can be used.

"I thought I may have spied a tear in the Geminis eye when it was played back. Lol! Much more was accomplished this past Sunday. We planned on correcting mistakes before hand. We finished all the instrument recordings but one guitar part which will conclude all the instrumentation and allow us to begin on the road to vocals. We consumed mushrooms again and I ended up throwing up and passing out on the ground outside the studio with a big gash in my head. I just remember how fearless I was even though I had lost control and watched as my body shut down. It felt gooood! Like as if I had died it wouldn't be a problem at all. Though I'm sure once I crossed over and regained my senses I would have been extremely pissed for not hanging around long enough to complete the album. No one had witnessed this episode thankfully. Vintage Flesh Issues Recording Update

Vintage Flesh has checked in with the following update about recording new material:

"Last Sunday went as well as we hoped for. We were able to get some more fine guitar work out of Terry and that may conclude his contributions as I understand it. We are in the process of converging forces between us and him and it is our hope and desire to have Terry S. as a full fledged member of our unit as a final result. Expect to see him as a certain member to our live line up at the very least.

"This coming Sunday will see Raypissed tearing out his vokills for the first time on this venture with two or three songs and Hex will begin keyboard work. One more guitar solo to be added to our only ten minute plus song and its on to some fine tweaking to be done. Having heard the basis recording of every tune last night for the first time (on tape), I can tell you my drums sound as drunk and stoned as I was! lol! Lose and slop worthy but truly underground and unpolished. Still very compelling in places. All is going as planned! I see the light of the freezing Moon at the end of the tunnel!"

"The new album is starting to come together really well, solos and synthwork is next. Gemini has been doing an excellent job of recording us so far, and we had a camera on hand to capture some of it."

Vintage Flesh Issues Recording Update

New Hampshire black metal act Vintage Flesh has issued the following recording update:

"So, much has been accomplished in the past couple weeks. Most of the guitar work is down after two days worth of toil. I went yesterday to offer support. Also to get heavily intoxicated away from home life for a day. Not much to tell really. We are keeping Matt (Gemini) on the drums for 'priest skin ship.' I initially had a hard time with certain parts of the song and decided to let Gemini have a stab at it. He did very well after only three takes. Then I began to think I may want another crack at it but after re-hearing his take I decided to let him go with it. The drum parts are mine exactly as if I had done them just minus the bad nerve damage I suffer only when drumming at times.

"Next session will have Hex complete all guitar tracks and then we can have Matt step up on bass to fill out certain songs that would benefit from a good bass line. But not all tracks. Then comes keys and added effects and finally i get to vomit up my vokills all over the nice little ditties at hand. Moving along as planned!"

Vintage Flesh Comments On Drum Recording

New Hampshire black metal act Vintage Flesh has checked in with the following update about the drum recording process:

"Whew, as the drummer for this new pursuit I can tell you I am relieved to be complete, I only hope I can remain proud of what I have done when it is all over. My damaged nerves made this a real process. The drugs and the excess coffee over the years have certainly had there way over my ravaged inner workings. I feel I did the best with what my body can do though. We had Gemini of C.N.V. sit in on drums for one song 'Priest skin ship.'

"I was having particular nerve problems that day and my blast beats were for shit. Wo in hopes of moving on Gemini valiantly offered to help. In three takes it was complete. Though we may have at it one more time. It seems Gemini may be laying down some bass soon as well. We were bass free on the first release so this should fill things up a bit and bring out the doom elements as well. More...

Vintage Flesh Issues Recording Update

New Hampshire black metallers Vintage Flesh have checked in with the following recording update:

"Whoa that was a rougher ride then the first! but we managed to nail two long songs one clocking at a whopping 10 minutes plus! The other just under at 9 and change. I know we did some other shit but alot of time was lost. We split the band up for almost a minute at one point. Just to give ya an idea of the tension involved. The drums are very demanding of every fiber of talent I have to offer them and that's not as much as I would like. But said and done and I am very glad for being pushed to the extreme. Note to self : don't go into the recording process with Hex knowing he is without weedies. Gotta keep that well supplied. Much more reasonable when high and drunk. End of note.

"Other then that we get off to a slow start. Our fine rec. engineer Gemini was still on the road rushing back from the Maryland Death Fest at the time we were to meet at the Opal studio. So we didn't get started till about 3:30PM. Till about 12:30Oneish in the morning! Hey I'm an old cotter and need my ugly rest. looks as nasty as mine don't fall from the sky. So to rap this up i will conclude, it looks like we have one more drum session if not two. I'm hoping one. Then I can take a break for a couple weeks and let TexHex do his things on the strings. Hopefully we wont find him hangin' from the ceiling by one of them. More later, remain a hater..."

Vintage Flesh Issues Recording Update

New Hampshire black metal act Vintage Flesh has issued the following update about recording new material:

"Our first Sunday of recording is in the bag. The body bag... We have begun with the drumming tracks as do most bands in this procedure. This time around is different due to the fact that we are no longer a three piece. Raypissed the vocalist has taken on drum duty. 6 songs were covered that day on drums and we may have a couple re-do's and four more to complete all the drum tracks. Then its on to Hex and his fearful attack on the strings.

"Much budd and good New England brewed Beer is being consumed for the entire process. As it should be... We will be coming here to keep who ever cares up on the progress of this, our sophomore project? I don't know, its our second full length and it promises to over shadow the last with the black shades of Dunwich HORROR! More to come next Sunday."

Vintage Flesh Recording New Album

Guitarist Reverend John Hex of New Hampshire black metal act Vintage Flesh has issued the following statement about the band recording new material:

"We are finally going back into the studio to record our second full length album this Sunday, Gemini from CNV will once again be recording us. We are excited to begin the recording process as we have 11 tracks that we will be recording, and our music will continue to evolve into the shapeless black form that it really is.

"Raypissed will be handling the drums as well as the vocal work for the album, and I (Hex) will be doing all the guitar/synth work for the album. We continue to truly suffer for our music, and we will pour our blood into these songs. We will keep you updated on our progress in the studio and hope to have a release by fall."

Vintage Flesh Recruits New Guitarist

New Hampshire black metal band Vintage Flesh has issued the following update about recruiting a new guitarist:

"It has been confirmed. V.F. has proudly accepted a new third member to the inner fold and we could not be more pleased with the who, the how, and the why! Our esteemed new addition is the mightiest of the mighty N.E. punk & doom plodder, Terry Savastano! Terry has made his ambitious way through some of New England's toughest metal, punk, & hardcore acts all of them well known internationally and well respected. Putting his down tuned strings and troubled vox to bands such as FreakOfNature, SuperPower, Disrupt, Warhorse, and possibly most well known as a founding member of early N.E. doomsters Grief (among others)!

"Yes Terry has weathered the good the bad and the extremely ugly sides of the extreme music scene. always staying the course and pushing forward through some of the harshest, thankless times of our tortured but beloved local scenes. Surely one of N.E. undergrounds finest! True to himself and the genres he loves, he seemed the obvious choice for our fetid and disgraceful project known as Vintage Flesh. More...
