Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.
Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

Said John Tardy of fest: "My brother and I have been so fortunate and thankful to be part of some the best and biggest music festivals in the world. The amount of people, bands and energy these festivals can bring is just awesome. From the first time we played one, it has always been a dream of ours to put together a music festival that is not only fun for the fans, bands and crews, but one that also brings a closeness to all involved. After years and years of talking about it, we finally decided the time is now. More...

January 30th, 2016 will mark the official kick off of the first annual Florida Metal Fest! Additionally, the Tardy brothers have invited some of their favorite bands from around the country to take part in this special event including Corrosion Of Conformity, Trouble, Madball, Broken Hope and Generichrist!
Two local Floridian bands, both winners of the Battle Of The Bands contest show, will be opening the fest. The first battle was held on November 27th at the BrassMug where the winning band was
Untoten Krieg. The second battle will take place on December 26th at the Crowbar in Ybor City to determine the final band of this year's lineup.
We want to put together a first class festival. From the venue to the PA, from the lights to the lineup we are trying our best to make this as memorable event as possible. No festival, anywhere in the world, even with the best possible lineup, would work if the area does not support it. I think that Tampa, and its surrounding cities, is a great music area and one that is ready to make this event come to life."

Every once in a while, a tour comes along with a lineup that's more or less impossible to ignore. This year, Europe is being treated to a veritable wet dream of extremity, as two of death metal's most revered bands, Carcass and Obituary, are teaming up with grindcore godfathers Napalm Death and Canadian progressive thrashers, Voivod, as well as Swiss act, Herod, to give headbangers the Deathcrusher tour. As if to get the grey island out of the way first, the trek began this past week in the United Kingdom and this reporter was lucky enough to witness the event in Bristol, at a venue called The Motion.
Opening the show was Herod, a progressive sludge metal band from Vevey in Switzerland, who released their debut album, "They Were None" last year. Although they didn't feel out of place as such on this bill, opening such an exciting lineup with sludge didn't seem like a particularly good idea and as a result, Herod came across as a boring start that created the sentiment opening bands dread; the old, "Let's just get this over with so we can watch what we came for," vibe. They received a relatively warm response from the crowd however, who it must be said of Bristol audiences, are usually supportive of unknown or new bands. Whatever the case, with a dull stage presence and uninteresting repertoire, Herod will need to wait until their next album before they seriously impress any passing punters. More...

Former Obituary bassist Frank Watkins (also known as Bøddel of Gorgoroth) passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was only 47-years-old.
Watkins joined Obituary in 1989, after the band's debut album "Slowly We Rot", and recorded with them "Cause Of Death" in 1990. Obituary broke up in 1997 and reteamed again in 2003.
Watkins stayed with the group through the recording of 2009's album "Darkest Day". In 2010 Frank Watkins left Obituary on acrimonious terms and was replaced by Terry Butler.
After having just supported Faith No More on a U.S. run, and in addition to the previously revealed European dates for the "Deathcrusher Tour" 2015, Napalm Death will continue touring by joining up with Carcass, Obituary, Voivod as well as Herod on a string of U.K. and Ireland dates of the "Deathcrusher Tour."
An announcement from Napalm Death about the tour can be seen in the video below, while a full list of upcoming dates is available after the jump.

NAPALM DEATH's Shane Embury comments as follows:
"It goes without saying that we are really looking forward to the upcoming "Deathcrusher Tour". The Musical history and relevance between all 4 of the bands truly speaks for itself I think - It's heartwarming to be a part of it.
All of the bands involved in this tour have been great friends for what I guess is a lifetime now - we have played together on many separate occasions before BUT this tour! This tour is something very special, I mean come on...VOIVOD, NAPALM DEATH, OBITUARY & CARCASS are you kidding? All on the same bill night after night?? This is the A to Z of heavy, grinding, progressive, crushing riffs in one insane package!
I expect to see nothing less than savage mosh pit mayhem every evening....this is one tour nobody should miss..." More...

Death metal legends Obituary have released an animated music video for the track "Violence" from their most recent album "Inked In Blood." The video, which was animated and directed by Balázs Gróf, can be viewed below.
The band commented on the video: "We had a blast creating the idea for the video and to watch Balázs animate us was a very cool experience. In the world of modern technology it is easy to shoot a music video with a camera crew and high-tech video equipment but we wanted something different. Something we hope the fans enjoy and understand that OBITUARY, though we are the godfathers of Florida death metal, don't take themselves too seriously and enjoy having fun. This cartoon is a perfect example of what kind of people we are. Not afraid to kick ass on stage but also not afraid to laugh at ourselves.
"We know that music is created for fans to enjoy and get away in their mind from the real world for just a few moments at a time and this video we hope makes them smile and laugh with us and at us."
Director and animator Balázs Gróf commented as well: "I made a video for the Hungarian band Blind Myself which went on Headbangers Ball's best videos of 2008 chart and it was seen by John Tardy, who became interested in having an animated video for OBITUARY. Eventually the long awaited new studio album Inked In Blood provided the reason for making one. More...
