Obituary Announces Live Shows, New Album

The Tampa death metal icons in Obituary will bring their brutal wares to the stage this Fall on a short series of live assaults.

The tour begins with a pair of back-to-back shows at Brooklyn, New York's Saint Vitus Bar on October 9th and 10th, before flattening nine more venues through October 20th. Having been holed-up in their own Redneck Studios the last few weeks penning the follow-up to 2009's punishing "Darkest Day full-length" (2009), the shows serve as a temporary writing break.

Elaborates drummer Donald Tardy: "We have been busting our asses in the studio, having a blast and writing new material. Twelve songs are done and ready to be recorded but we want a monster album for our fans so we are working on a few more to make this record huge! We will continue writing until October when we will take a break from the studio and new music and go destroy the Trois-Rivieres Metalfest with Hatebreed and crush the US."

10/09/2013 St. Vitus - Brooklyn, NY
10/10/2013 St. Vitus - Brooklyn, NY
10/11/2013 American Legion - Allentown, PA
10/12/2013 Trois-Rivieres Metalfest - Trois-Rivieres, QC
10/13/2013 Presidents Club - Boston, MA
10/15/2013 Beale Street - Indianapolis, IN
10/16/2013 Pyramid Scheme - Grand Rapids, MI
10/17/2013 Fubar - St Louis, MO
10/18/2013 Cobra Lounge - Chicago, IL
10/19/2013 Cafe 611 - Frederick, MD
10/20/2013 El N' Gee - New London, CT

The as-yet-untitled full-length will be recorded with the KickStarter funding help of the band's legion of dedicated fans around the globe. The campaign is in its final week and can be found right here.

Obituary Comments On Kickstarter Campaign

Obituary is now tracking a new album, and the band launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the recording process.

The campaign reached its funding goal in a single day, but fans can still contribute as stretch goals have been added, including a documentary of the band's time in the studio. Obituary also comments:

"The immediate and overwhelming response has been absolutely unbelievable. We truly have the best fans in the world and thank you guys so much for getting us to our initial goal. Your response and support has us more determined than ever to make it to our ultimate goal which is releasing this album totally under our own control.

"This is not a campaign against the machine, or a bash on record companies. This is just one band's dream...after 25 years of music, to do it our way. Let's get this done!!!" More...

Separating Art From the Artist

I personally find the idea of putting people on a pedestal to be incredibly naive and childish. At some point, whoever you idolize as being perfect will turn out to have some sort of horrible character flaws that you'll never be able to forgive. People are human, and with that comes not being perfect. Hence why I'm able to say that I don't mind somebody's offstage behavior as much as I do the actual music. In the same way, I don't care about lyrical themes that embrace politics that I disagree with. More...

Obituary Kicking Off North American Tour

The Florida death metal ministers in Obituary are set to kick off their first North American headlining tour in over three years this weekend. Brought to you by Rock The Nation and sponsored by Fender, the Carnival Of Death Tour 2012 will commence this Saturday in Orlando, Florida and tear its way through nearly two dozen cities. Further brutality will come from reunited death metallers Broken Hope as well as Decrepit Birth, Jungle Rot, and Encrust.

Obituary is also currently writing the follow up to the "Darkest Day" full-length, released in 2009 via Candlelight Records, with official details to be announced in the coming weeks.

The Carnival Of Death Tour marks Obituary’s first full North American tour run as a four-piece with death metal alumnus Terry Butler (Death, Six Feet Under, Massacre, Denial Fiend) on bass. For this trek, the band — vocalist John Tardy, drummer Donald Tardy, guitarist Trevor Peres and Butler — compiled a special fan-generated set list that will delve deep into the back catalog to include tunes predominantly off the group's first three full-lengths: "Slowly We Rot," "Cause Of Death," and "The End Complete."

Comments Donald Tardy: “We are super excited about the start of the Carnival Of Death Tour. It has been a long time since we toured extensively across the US and Canada. For the first time we went to our fans and asked their help in picking the songs for this ‘classic set’ and it really turned out to be a great set list. Most of these songs we have not played in over a decade and some of them we’ve never performed onstage so the anticipation is killing me! It's was quite the challenge to re-learn songs from 20 years ago but we are ready to blow our old fans away and hopefully gain some new ones. The scene has been set, the fans have selected the songs and the time has come to hit the road and kick off this Carnival.... send in the Clowns!” More...

Encrust Comments On Upcoming Obituary Tour

As was previously announced, Chicago band Encrust will be embarking on Fender’s Carnival of Death Tour 2012 with Obituary, Decrepit Birth, Jungle Rot, and a reactivated Broken Hope. The tour begins September 8th in Orlando, Florida and currently wraps on September 29th in Dallas, Texas.

Encrust has shared the stage with the likes of everyone from Red Fang and Corrosion of Conformity to Goatwhore and Exhumed. "Here's an example," says Pyrzynski. "Chris broke his hand punching Ryan in the head because that's what they do live. They get wild, and it's always unpredictable—even for the rest of us on stage."

Sunday Old School: Obituary

Believe it or else, there was a time when death metal didn’t consist of bands who looked and sounded exactly the same, when it was an exciting new genre, spurred on by the likes of Possessed and Kreator. Like all genres, it had some bands that stood out more than others, and one group who stood out due to their undeniable quality and fresh approach, was Obituary. Obituary were originally formed by brothers John and Donald Tardy under the name Executioner in 1984, before altering their moniker to Xecutioner, prior to finally (and wisely) changing their name once again in 1988 to Obituary. Soon after the final name change, they entered Morrisound Studios to record with Scott Burns, who within the studio, also produced several other extreme metal classics such as "Effigy of the Forgotten" by Suffocation and a number of albums by Cannibal Corpse. The result was their first album, "Slowly We Rot," which was released in the summer of 1989 through Roadracer Records. The album was very well received, and many Obituary fans still regard it as their heaviest record to date. They were soon faced with the task of finding new members however, as guitarist Allen West and bass player Daniel Tucker parted company with the group, leaving their shoes to be filled by former Death guitarist James Murphy and hardcore loving bassist Frank Watkins respectively. This new lineup soon recorded a second album, "Cause Of Death," released the next year to similar praise. The album featured artwork by Michael Whelan which was originally going to be used by Sepultura for their "Beneath The Remains" album, but Obituary were allowed to use it first. It also contained a cover of the classic Celtic Frost song, "Circle of the Tyrants" and is today regarded as a true classic in the death metal genre.

This would prove to be their only record with Murphy, as the band welcomed Allen West back into the fold soon afterwards. They got to work on their third album, "The End Complete," which remains the biggest selling record to date, shifting well over half a million copies worldwide and gaining the band their first entry into the Billboard charts, peaking at number 16 on the Top Heatseekers chart. Although were not able to replicate this commercial success with the follow up, "World Demise," they made much of a profound statement, particularly with the music video for the album opener, "Don’t Care," which was seen as an environmental protest song, and featured shocking images of pollution. The album featured a number of other bleak sounding songs too, "Final Thoughts," "Lost" and the title track in particular. It would be three years before they released another record, which finally came in 1997 under the title, "Back From the Dead," the first Obituary album not to be produced by Scott Burns. The record received mixed reviews and, owing mostly to a lack of desire for touring, the band decided to call it a day soon after its release, marking their breakup with a live album suitably entitled, "Dead." Obituary Working On New Album

Florida death metal act Obituary has issued the following recap of recent live shows and announcement about working on the follow-up to the "Darkest Day" album (reviewed here):

"We really had a good time on that run through South America. There were some really good shows, a few cancelled shows too...but, all in all a really good time. We wound up taking 19 flights in 20 days and that was not fun, but the shows we did were awesome! Thanks to Lee Harrison for doing the shows with us. Lee was playing guitar with us and he sounded great! Thank you brother!

"We are home now working some more on the new album. We are in no hurry and it will get done when it gets done! We have a show in Miami coming up and then we head to Europe for about 5 weeks! I hope you can make it out to one of the many shows we have scheduled!

"South America thanks for all the support and we will be back sometime after the new album comes out!!!"
