Pit Stories: Smooth Move

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Swedish classic heavy metal band Astral Doors sends in a story about how keyboardist Jocke Roberg got his nickname:

This story takes place about 4 years ago in Southern Germany. We were the support act to the fantasy metal heroes Blind Guardian. I can't remember what town we played in, but that's not really important.

Some headline acts treat their support bands like crap and don't allow the technicians to do a proper job. How many gigs haven't you attended where the sound during the support band's actual show has been terrible? In this case however I must pay my tribute to Blind Guardian and their crew: they gave us everything they had, every night. For two months we were treated like kings and the technicians and the rest of the crew did an amazing job for us; night after night. We filmed all 37 gigs, so it's documented:) Thank you Guardians!

Ok, at the gig this particular night, our keyboard player, Jocke Roberg, had a really bad stomach. He was running in and out of the WC before the gig...doing his thing. The show started and everything went really well the first couple of songs. During song four or five, he felt it was time again. He started to sweat and the panic was close. When it was time for one of our most popular songs, “Evil is Forever”, where we use a recorded organ-hymn-kind-of-intro, which he normally plays along to; he took his chance: he ran behind stage, found a bucket and did the big one. We wondered where the hell he went and we were quite prepared to play the rest of the gig without keyboard. However: just as the recorded intro was finished, Mr. Roberg was back on stage. He completed the gig and everything went great. Ever since that day we call him Jocke Bucket!

Astral Doors' "Best of" collection, "Testament of Rock - The Best of Astral Doors" (reviewed here), will be released in North American on January 25th. You can hear the new single, "Victory," on the band's MySpace player.

Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

Astral Doors Streaming "Victory"

Astral Doors has issued the following announcement about streaming the song "Victory" online:

"The new album 'Testament of Rock' will be released this month in the states and now we present the new single 'Victory' here on myspace.

"Victory was first made in Swedish to honor our favorite Swedish hockey team, Leksands IF, but now, a year later, we wanna give the English version to the world. This version is more of a tribute to the game itself, not to a certain team.

"A rumor says that an unofficial homemade video to 'Victory' is in the making. If we like it, we'll put it out here as well! So....hello out there, it's on the air, it's hockey night tonight!"

Astral Doors Parts Ways With Guitarist

Astral Doors guitarist Martin Haglund has announced he is officially leaving the band. Martin issued the following statement about his departure:

"This decision has not been easy to make, but its needed. I have reached a point where I feel I have to focus more on my kids and support them in their hobbies and interests, by doing that I´m not able to give Astral Doors 100%. I don´t want to be the one that´s holding the band back so I let go. I will continue playing, writing and record music but on a more suitable level. I´ll keep the metal flowing that´s for sure. Being a member of Astral Doors has given me experiences and memories that I´ll bring to the grave. I am truly proud of my time in Astral Doors and what we have accomplished and brought to the hard-rock scene. Thanks and hugs to all of you! Now Astral Doors will reload and hit you harder then ever!"

Vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson also commented:

"Martin is a great guy and we wish him all the best. He did a great job with the mixing of our previous album that's for sure. Hope the job he did with that album will open a lot of doors for him as a producer. Astral Doors will not bring in a new guitar player in the band to replace Martin: Joachim Nordlund (the founder of Astral Doors, together with Johan Lindstedt and Nils Patrik Johansson) will from now on handle all guitars himself."

Astral Doors Issues New Album Update

Astral Doors is currently set to release their new album "Requiem of Time" in Europe on January 15th and in North America on February 16th. The band has issued the following update about the album:

"All the previous releases from Astral Doors have been mixed by the master Peter Tägtgren. He has done a great job for us and we love and respect him very much. This time around however, we decided to give our very own guitar player, Martin Haglund, the chance to be in control of the mixing process. Martin has really improved as a sound engineer and technician the last couple of years, and we felt that he could do as great job as his best friend Tägtgren.

"The release is set to January, but we hope that we can give you a sample from the upcoming release within a month or so. Martins mix is just incredible and we can't wait to share it with the entire world. 'Requiem of Time,' our 5th album is nothing but a killer. Songs like 'Testament of Rock,' 'Power and the Glory,' 'When Darkness Comes,' and 'St. Peters Cross' will be classics for any Astral fan, that's for sure!"
