Metal Lyrics: A Race to the Bottom?

I love art that shocks just for the simple shock value and the awkward looks I get from people when I mention enjoying things like "Fanta Claus" and "Postal 2." So it goes without saying that I've done my fair share of listening to bands with lyrical themes glorifying every single perversion and depravity imaginable. But once you've pushed things to the crudest and most vulgar level possible, you hit a wall and say to yourself, “Wow, this is completely fucking pointless.”

Yes, I've been there. I've listened to Aryan Terrorism's xenophobic calls for violence. I've sung along to the homophobic hate hymns of Impaled Nazarene and The Meat Shits. I've even praised the lyrics of Rupture Christ and Woods of Infinity with the term, “Pedo to the metal!” Looking back on all that now, it just seems beyond juvenile since intentionally upsetting people and violating taboos doesn't do anything productive. Getting knee-jerk reactions out of people doesn’t make you more enlightened just because you aren’t bothered by the things that other people would prefer not to think about. At some point, you need to move past The Death of God and onto the Reevaluation of All Values. Yes, reality is filled with all sorts of horrible things but that hardly means that the most horrific are the most real and the most terrifying are the most true. More...

MetalSucks today proudly premieres the opening track from Devourment’s pending Relapse debut, "Conceived In Sewage," with the easy listening number “Legalize Homicide.”

Witness the violence unfolding while you slam your brain into pudding to "Legalize Homicide" at this location. One of those inspirational tunes that really gets your blood moving, motivational poetry flows through the song: “I'm shackled by my twisted mind, A prisoner of the darkest kind, Ravaged by an insidious mind, A machine of death from within you'll find, The knife, The axe...”

Previously, Relapse Records also dropped a new grislly lyric video for the album’s crushing “50 Ton War Machine” (available here).

Devourment Recording New Album

Relapse Records has issued the following announcement about Devourment recording a new full-length album:

"Devourment, the most brutal death metal band on the planet, has entered the studio to record the highly anticipated new album and first for new label, Relapse Records. The band is tracking at Mana Recordings in St. Petersburg, FL with legendary death metal icon Erik Rutan (HATE ETERNAL, MORBID ANGEL). The album promises to be the band's heaviest, most crushing release to date and will see an early 2013 release. Tentative song titles include 'Fucked With Rats' and 'Fifty Ton War Machine.'"

Devourment frontman Mike Majewski commented on the upcoming record, “This will be the deepest album we have done for sure. Definitely expect the intensity, but also more thought out song structures. I would say a bit of a throwback to old school brutal bands, but with the signature Devourment elements.”

Further album details will be announced as they are made available. You can also stay up to date on Devourment over at the band's Facebook profile.

Re-recording Metal - For Better or for Worse?

Back in 2005, Dimmu Borgir was a band still basking in the unholy success of its latest outing “Death Cult Armageddon.” And yet instead of launching into a new opus for fans to consume the band members decided on a new approach; they would re-release an early and often praised album (“Stormblåst”) by completely re-recording it, updating the sound with modern production and slap “MMV” on the end. There had of course been prior examples of bands making this choice, but it was perhaps here that best truly crystallized the new era of metal re-recordings. No doubt you have heard of similar re-recordings in the same vein, perhaps most recently Gorgoroth’s “Under the Sign of Hell 2011” or Burzum’s “From the Depths of Darkness”? Perhaps not, but that’s what I aim to uncover for you here. More...

MD Deathfest Cancellations and Replacements

The Maryland Deathfest organizers have announced that Death Breath and Devourment have canceled their scheduled appearances at the event this year and replacements have been named.

Death Breath has issued the following statement regarding their cancellation:

"Production difficulties with the complexity of the band being spread all over the world made an error in the schedule, so we simply had to cancel as we felt we couldn´t achieve a good performance. To do a one off show is actually more difficult than we thought. We are very sorry for this and wanna say thanks for understanding to the fans and the promoter."

Devourment canceled as the result of a member in the band attending to family matters.

As a result of these cancellations, In Solitude (Sweden) will be making the band's first U.S. appearance, and Skinless will be playing the act's last ever show, and with the original line up. In Solitude will be playing on Saturday, and Skinless will be playing on Sunday.

The final Deathfest schedule was to be released this Friday, April 29th, but these changes have delayed those plans. Expect a complete schedule next week.

Cannibal Corpse's Plague Strikes Nashville (video)

It’s not often venues pack the house for a Tuesday evening show. However, it’s not that often that Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Vital Remains, and Devourment are in the same place at the same time. On November 9th, 2010, Brutal death metal fans came out of the woodworks and packed the Exit/In for this show, with even the venue’s balcony area being filled. Not your everyday sight in the “Bible belt” of America, many fans who were waiting in line on the side of the street sported shirts with some of the most obscene artwork known to metal on them. The doors opened unexpectedly late, with Devourment taking the stage as fans were still pouring in. More...
