Tribunal Recruits Former Iced Earth Vocalist

Tribunal has checked in with the following update about the band's activity and recruiting former Iced Earth vocalist John Greely:

"Hello again brothers and sisters, it's been a while since we have updated and we apologize for this. We have been extremely busy in this absence and have a lot of news to report! 1st off we are more than happy to announce the new vocalist who is getting ready to lay his vocal tracks down on the CD as none other than former Iced Earth lead vocalist John Greely! Yes you read that right!! John was the vocalist on the 'Night Of The Stormrider' CD. John and I were introduced by a very good mutual friend and once we spoke on the phone we knew it was a win win situation and a guaranteed 100% match, John's voice will more than compliment Tribunal's Metal! Then came the issue of a drummer which will be announced in a few days, have no worries!

"Once John has laid his vocals we will do a final mix and mastering on the tracks before we send them off for replication! On another subject, my bass rig has had an entire overhaul. I have upgraded to a much better head, the Mighty Ampeg B4R, the true tone monster! Besides the upgrade with new heads I have upgraded my bass cabinets having new custom cabinets made for me that are truly one of a kind! In addition I have designed a one of a kind 8 sting bass to be made by none other than the Master Luthier himself, Bernie Rico Jr! More...

Iced Earth Announces Four Dates w/ Rare Setlist

Jon Schaffer has announced an eclectic, fan-favorite set list for Iced Earth’s upcoming limited-engagement U.S. tour.

“I wanted to give fans something really special,” Schaffer said. “So I put together songs that include some we’ve rarely played live before, and at least one that reaches back to our first album. Even long-time fans of Iced Earth are going to be surprised.”

Iced Earth kicks off its four-city U.S. tour on September 10 in Washington DC, followed by Chicago (September 21), New York (September 23), and West Hollywood (September 25).

The touring lineup for Iced Earth will be Jon Schaffer (Rhythm and Lead Guitars, Backing Vocals), Matt Barlow (Lead and Backing Vocals), Brent Smedley (Drums), Troy Seele (Lead Guitar), Freddie Vidales (Bass Guitar).

Schaffer’s Sons of Liberty band, featuring Schaffer on lead vocals, makes its live debut on this tour.

"Sons of Liberty is a project that is near and dear to my heart,” Schaffer said. “I'm very passionate about it. This is an opportunity for me to speak directly to the people. Hopefully, I can inspire them to look into the message and wake up to what is going on around them.”

He continued: "This isn't about me thinking I'm a great singer or front man. In fact, through the rehearsing process my respect has only grown for Matt. Doing lead vocals presents a whole new set of challenges for me."

According to Schaffer, the response to his Sons of Liberty album "Brush-Fires of the Mind" has been overwhelming. It was only officially released on July 13, but already tens of thousands of copies have been sold and given away on his web site. Hundreds more are downloaded every week.

But as popular as Sons of Liberty has become, it’s Iced Earth that takes center stage this month.

“We haven’t been this energized and passionate in a long time,” Schaffer said. “We are definitely going to kick ass, and have a lot of fun doing it.”

Preparing for the four-city tour isn’t all that’s been keeping Schaffer busy these days. He’s also working on a new Iced Earth album (scheduled for release Spring, 2011), a live DVD (scheduled for release before the end of this year), and a special project he will only say fans will “freakin’ love.”

The soon-to-be-released DVD is called “Festivals of the Wicked.” It features full-length concerts from Wacken, 2007 (with Tim “Ripper” Owens on lead vocals), Metal Camp and Rock Hard, 2008 (with Matt Barlow on lead vocals), a rockin’ road movie, a long interview with Jon, and more.

Charred Walls of the Damned Kicks off Tour

The biggest oddity of Charred Walls of the Damned’s first tour is they are playing smaller venues – bars and small theaters and the like. With the amount of experience and reputation this supergroup has (although admittedly half of the studio members aren’t on the road), it seems like they should be playing arenas and ampitheaters, or at least opening for big name headliners.

But as it stands, Charred Walls of the Damned kicked off their first ever tour in Chicago at the Empty Bottle. The Empty Bottle is the type of old school dive where the air feels sticky, not to mention the restroom floors. Thus, it is perfect for an old school traditional metal show. And suffice it to say there wasn’t anyone in the crowd that became a metal fan after hearing “Nothing Else Matters” in high school, and nobody was rocking the latest Hot Topic sampler on the way to the show either. The folks here were all metal-for-life types, even the young ones. More...

Sons Of Liberty Streaming New Album Online

Iced Earth brainchild Jon Schaffer has developed a new project titled Sons of Liberty for the purpose of spreading awareness about the current state of affairs worldwide. Schaffer handles all vocals and instrumentation for Sons of Liberty but the effort also features guest solos by producer Jim Morris, Iced Earth guitarist Troy Seele, and bassist Ruben Drake.

Lemmy And More Pay Tribute To Ronnie Dio

As the world mourns the loss of Ronnie James Dio, the brilliant heavy metal singer who worked with the likes of Black Sabbath, Rainbow and his own, self-titled band, more of his peers have posted messages online as a tribute. You can read some more below.

Lemmy (Motorhead): "I'm truly upset, especially since he seemed to be rallying at the Golden Gods show. Bon Voyage, Ronnie. Rest in peace. I'm devastated."

Jeff Waters (Annihilator): "He was a super nice person, uniquely talented and has left us all with great music. In a way, it will strange to live and work in a world and business where RJD is no longer on tour, at the festivals, putting out his music. You will never be forgotten and will live on in the music of so many others. Stand up and shout." More...
