Rock Giants Pay Tribute To Lemmy In Documentary
Billboard.com reports: The life and career of Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister is being celebrated in a new documentary, tentatively titled "Lemmy" and slated for release in 2009.
The film promises fans more access than ever before to Kilmister's life, and includes interviews with past and present bandmates and such peers/admirers as Slash, Dave Grohl, the Clash's Mick Jones, Alice Cooper, Steve Vai and wrestling superstar Triple H.
Directors/producers Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski (both of whom have contributed to Billboard) are shooting the film on a combination of HD video and super 16 mm film. Other giants from the world of metal and hard rock will appear in the film as well, with details to be announced. "We haven't heard the word 'no' yet after any interview request," Olliver says.
"Shooting Lemmy is like filming dangerous wildlife. He never does what you expect him to do, and he never does anything you want him to do," Olliver says with a laugh. "A lot of the coolest shots are shots we had to wait for four or five shows to go by before we could get them."

Guns N' Roses To Re-Issue Greatest Hits Album
Guns N' Roses will release their collection of Greatest Hits in the U.K. on June 2nd. The album has previously sold over four million copies.
This will likely not sit well with members of the band, past and present, since when the album was originally released four years ago, Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagen all tried to prevent its release.
Bumblefoot To Release New Song For Free
Ron Thal, aka Bumblefoot, is treating his fans new and old to a bit of free music before his new album, “Abnormal,” is released to the public for sale, by offering the title track free for download. As with his previous albums Thal will be self-releasing “Abnormal” online. “I never went along with the way the music industry did things, and have always been rebelliously against it, spouting off how the system doesn't work, and how bands should be DIY and make it just about the music and the fans. 10 years ago I was giving away songs on Napster and releasing my own albums, selling them online. 10 years later, I still do it and still stand by it - fuck the business, connect directly with the fans.”
The recording and creative process has also been a very fresh experience, as Thal has been making videos of the recording process and posting them online, running contests to include backing singers to perform on the album, and giving progress reports on his forums to keep everyone there with him while the album was coming together. “It's been great being able to share the experience as it happens. It'll be another month before the CD is manufactured - until then, I wanna give away a little taste. Download it, share it, delete it, it's yours to do as you wish.”
“Abnormal”, the follow-up to Thal’s previous offering “Normal”, is a hard rock album flavored with a light-hearted mix of different styles and genres, with catchy hooks and blistering guitar work. When asked about the new project, Thal had the following to say: “It was October last year, I was about to fly into a fucking rage, went to go crash out at the studio, and all these songs just started flying out of my head. Spent the next few months recording drums, bass, guitars, vocals, opera singers and tuba players. Some people heard it and said it reminds them of the Sex Pistols with a little Beatles/Queen vibe to it. Didn't have a plan, just did what I felt, and in the end this is what I got.”
With recording completed and finishing touches being added to the tracks and art work, “Abnormal” will be ready for release In early June, with the free track available for download Monday May 19th, 2008. See www.bumblefoot.com for more information. Along with CD’s being available for purchase, the tracks will be available for download on iTunes, and a very special limited edition Fan Pack will be available for diehard fans that want something a bit different in a limited quantity. The CD will be available at www.cdbaby.com , www.amazon.com as well as Bumblefoot’s own artist-run partner Bald Freak Music (www.baldfreak.com).

Sebastian Bach Denies Velvet Revolver Rumours
Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach says he isn't in any hurry to join rock supergroup Velvet Revolver.
In an interview with on the The Buckethead Show on American radio station Tampa 98 Rock yesterday, the singer said he would find it "really awkward" joining VR.
"I've talked to Slash recently and I think it'd be really awkward for me to join that band," said bach. "Number one, my new record, Angel Down, I like it more than Velvet Revolver records. That's just being totally honest. I love Guns N' Roses' material, but I've got my own old songs - Skid Row - so for me, it would all depend on music. I wouldn't just join the band just to join the band."
However, Bach's not totally ruling out ever stepping into departed frontman Scott Weiland's shoes... Well, maybe not. More...

Rock Heavyweights Jam Out At The Roxy
Billboard.com reports: A cast of rock heavyweights crammed the Roxy stage in Hollywood Thursday night (May 1) for a jam session that found the likes of Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath and Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses) on stage with the likes of Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols and Alice In Chains' Jerry Cantrell.
All came together for the first of five Thursday-night gigs in May featuring Navarro and Sorum's occasional side project, Camp Freddy, which also features guitarist/vocalist Billy Morrison, bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction, Alanis Morissette) and singers McGrath and Donovan Leitch, son of folk singer Donovan.
The Roxy is known for holding occasional jam sessions with top-shelf names, and this collective opened its Roxy stand by wowing the crowd with covers of songs by Thin Lizzy ("Jailbreak"), Oasis ("Rock and Roll Star"), Killing Joke ("Eighties"), Blur ("Song 2") and David Bowie ("Suffragette City").

Guns N' Roses "Negotiating" To Release New Album
Billboard.com reports: With a new management team in place, Guns N' Roses is "in negotiations" for the release of its decade-in-the-making album "Chinese Democracy," according to a post on the band's Web site.
The message did not elaborate on what the discussions concern, or offer an approximate release date for "Chinese Democracy," which was last on Interscope's release schedule in March 2007.
In other GNR news, guitarist Robin Finck has left the Axl Rose-led band to return to Nine Inch Nails, and will tour with the latter act this summer.
"Robin's plans caught everyone in Guns, as well as our fans, a bit off-guard," the band says. "Neither we nor management, etc., know any more in this regard and we prefer not to speculate or offer opinions at this time."
"When we begin to put tour plans together, we'll see where things are," the post continues. "Until then, Robin's touring with NIN and we're working with management on our game plans."
Velvet Revolver To Continue Without Scott Weiland?
Classic Rock magazine's Jerry ewing recently spoke to Velvet Revolver/ former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Here are some excerpts:
Slash: I was talking with Robert Plant the other night and he was casually naming certain ZEPPELIN songs and then in the same breath who it was ripped off from.
Classic Rock: Did GUNS N' ROSES ever get taken to court for allegedly ripping anyone off?
Slash: No. One of the things about myself and the other members of GUNS N' ROSES, with the exception of maybe Izzy [Stradlin], 'cause he was maybe a bit more freeform, was that we were huge sticklers for anything that sounded like anything else. Straight off the bat if you played a few chords and it really reminded you of something else we scrapped it. It's very different with VELVET REVOLVER. Even though myself and Duff [McKagan] are the same way, and Matt [Sorum], Scott [Weiland] will rip something. We'll be like, "No, we can't do that," and he'll be like, "Oh, go on, let's do it," and we'll do it.
Classic Rock: Going back to VELVET REVOLVER, there's been a lot said on the Internet between Scott and Matt. What's the current state of play?
Slash: We've got six shows, ha-ha.
Classic Rock: How do you deal with that stuff flying around?
Slash: I have no comment. Obviously I'm very aware of everything that's going on. The only thing I can add to that is, in contrast to what Scott says, there will be a VELVET REVOLVER after this tour.
Classic Rock: With Scott singing?
Slash: I have no comment on that [chuckles].
Free Dr. Pepper For USA If GNR Release New Album
Tired of a world in which Americans idolize wannabe singers and musicals about high schoolers pass as rock 'n roll music, Dr Pepper is encouraging (OK, begging) Axl Rose to finally release his 17-year-in-the-making belabored masterpiece, "Chinese Democracy," in 2008.
In an unprecedented show of solidarity with Axl, everyone in America, except former GN'R guitarists Slash and Buckethead, will receive a free can of Dr Pepper if the album ships some time... anytime! in 2008. Dr Pepper supports Axl, and fully understands that sometimes you have to make it through the jungle before you get it right.
"It took a little patience to perfect Dr Pepper's special mix of 23 ingredients, which our fans have come to know and love," said Jaxie Alt, director of marketing for Dr Pepper. "So we completely understand and empathize with Axl's quest for perfection, for something more than the average album. We know once it's released, people will refer to it as 'Dr Pepper for the ears' because it will be such a refreshing blend of rich, bold sounds an instant classic."
Show your support for Axl and get on the nightrain of encouragement at this location.
Commented Axl Rose in a statement: "We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr. Pepper with our album, 'Chinese Democracy", as for us this came totally out of the blue. If there is any involvement with this promotion by our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time. And as some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him."
Zakk Wylde and Bumblefoot On Talking Metal
Zakk Wylde and Bumblefoot (of Guns N’ Roses) have been announced as the guests for next week’s new Talking Metal episode on Fuse. The episode will air next Friday, March 21st at midnight ET.
Here's the description of the show:
“What starts as a simple interview turns into a recording session when Zakk Wylde holds the Talking Metal crew hostage to record a brand new song with Bumblefoot of Guns N' Roses. John, Mark and Zakk perform Black Label Society's "Blood is Thicker than Water" and the TM exclusive jam of "Till The End."
Slash Speaks On Scott Weiland's Rehab Stint
TimeOutDubai.com recently conducted an interview with VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
On surviving the '80s and '90s excess:
"Oh yeah, there are moments when I stop and think of that, I definitely feel like I'm blessed because I'm still here, and I really had every reason to not be. . . Either someone's been looking out for me or it's just sheer luck, but because of that I decided that I should probably stop taking it for granted. That I should put my nose to the grindstone and do what my whole purpose for being here is."
On the fact that GUNS N' ROSES never seemed to fit in with the '80s L.A. scene:
"As soon as the '80s started, there was not a lot going on to be influenced by. Everything that inspired me was the stuff I listened to while growing up, and there was a dramatic shift in the '80s — GUNS N' ROSES was a proponent of change. We were a result of what the '80s was all about and the antitheses of it."
On the height of GUNS N' ROSES' success:
"We got to a point where it was really huge and it was fun in lots of ways, and in a lot of ways it was very overwhelming. But I enjoyed it, especially given where we all came from, which was basically nothing, to becoming this huge band on a global level."
"It had its moments where it became a little excessive. Luckily there was always some semblance of clarity which basically won out in the end. When I was working I never felt as destructive as when I wasn't working, and that was my problem — I figured that one out over the years."
On his decision to quit GUNS N' ROSES in 1996:
"It was a huge relief when I made that decision. From the early '90s onwards it was a very stressful situation, so I relieved myself of that burden, but then it was a hell of a lot of work to keep that all going, because from then I was out on my own. It's a tough business, I learned a lot about it, and I learned that without the umbrella of the whole GUNS N' ROSES name, I needed to be a bit more alert on a regular basis to stay afloat — it was slow learning . . . The one thing I learned? To take charge of everything to do with my career… and really not to trust anybody."
On the perceived wisdom that NIRVANA and the Seattle grunge scene overtook hard rock (and bands like GUNS N' ROSES) in the early 90s:
"That's pretty much a line of bulls*** right there, that never happened. Basically the band broke up right around the time that all that was happening, and a lot of the grunge bands — who are majorly influenced by GUNS N' ROSES — all of a sudden thought they'd taken over. But we just broke up and it had nothing to do with what was going on [with grunge], because in 1994 we were still the biggest stadium band, so it didn't really have any effect on us."
On how touring now compares to the days of intoxication, other than the obvious:
"It's not that much of a change. Some things have changed, but y'know the basics of it stay the same. Sure, there were some great times in the '80s too, but I just enjoy what I do — it's a very rock and roll family, so it kind of reminds me of my childhood."
On singer Scott Weiland's recent rehab stint:
"He's in rehab so I think he's doing OK. We helped him in the very early days, and we are always there if he needs support, but at this moment he's being taken care of."

APC Guitarist Talks About His Work with GNR
The Pulse of Radio reports that ASHES DIVIDE, the new project fronted by A PERFECT CIRCLE guitarist Billy Howerdel, has launched its own YouTube channel at this location. An initial group of interviews between Howerdel and MTV personality Matt Pinfield has been posted at the site. In the exchanges, Howerdel discusses his musical upbringing, recording with A PERFECT CIRCLE, the assembly of the ASHES DIVIDE touring band and the inspiration behind some of the project's songs.
One little-known fact about Howerdel is that before forming A PERFECT CIRCLE with TOOL singer Maynard James Keenan in 2000, he spent several years working on the still-unreleased GUNS N' ROSES album, "Chinese Democracy". Howerdel told The Pulse of Radio what he contributed to the record. "I came in there initially to program some guitar sounds, and then wound up hitting it off with Axl (Rose, GUNS frontman), and then my job kind of migrated into the computer guy. I don't know what you would call me exactly. I kind of was there all night with Axl as he would work. The band came in during the day with a producer and would work most of the day, and then I would come in ten o'clock at night, say goodbye to those guys, Axl would show up later on, and then we'd do our thing all night and then do it the next day."
ASHES DIVIDE's debut album, "Keep Telling Myself It's All Right", is due out on April 8. The first single is called "The Stone". Howerdel sings and plays guitar, bass and keyboard on the album, which also features A PERFECT CIRCLE's Josh Freese on drums and Maynard James Keenan's 11-year-old son Devo on cello.
ASHES DIVIDE has yet to announce tour plans or a live lineup. More...
Guns N Roses Completed New Album?
Classic Rock Magazine has issued the following report.
"It's a fact!
Classic Rock recently tracked down Beta Lebeis, personal manager of Axl Rose, who confirmed to us that Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy album 'was finished before Christmas.'
She added: 'Everybody knows that.'
Lebeis said Axl is currently 'in negotiations' with unspecified parties to arrange to album's on-sale date.
However, Classic Rock believes that Chinese Democracy may not be 'released' in the traditional sense - at least not initially.
We suspect that GN'R may follow the RADIOHEAD route of pay-as-you-like downloads. But we stress this has not been confirmed.
Another source close to the GN'R camp also suggested that Chinese Democracy may gain a conventional release in late summer, with a view to it becoming 'a big Christmas album.'
Stay tuned for the full, unexpurgated story behind Chinese Democracy in the next issue of Classic Rock, on sale on February 6th!"
Guns N' Roses' Bumblefoot Issues Tour Blog
GUNS N' ROSES site NewGNR.com has issued the following from Ron Thal aka Bumblefoot:
"Heey!
"Just wanted to wish y'all Happy Holidays and say *THANK YOU* for everything."
"Last year during the US/Canada shows, I made a little tourblog. It's the Holidays, I'm in a sharing mood, here ya go."
"It may not be what ya wanted for Christmas (uh, ya think??) but it's still better than a dancing elf with your fucking face on it." More...
