Ozzfest 2008 Deemed A Success By Organizers

Billboard.com reports: Ozzfest 2008, with Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne as headliners, grossed nearly $3.5 million and drew close to 30,000 people to Dallas' Pizza Hut Park, according to producers Sharon Osbourne and AEG Live.

Sponsored by Affliction Clothing, this year's Ozzfest marked the return of the 13-year-old hard music brand after a free run at amphitheaters last year. This year's one-off event did "fantastically well," Sharon Osbourne told Billboard.com. "The one thing is you want for the kids to go away and keep talking about what a great show it was, and that's what they're doing."

In addition to Metallica and Osbourne, mainstage acts were Serj Tankian, Hellyeah, Johnathan Davis, Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica, and In This Moment. The second stage featured Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. On the third stage were the Sword, Drowning Pool, Rigor Mortis, Within Chaos, The Destro and "battle of the bands" winners Debris and Black Tooth.

Osbourne says plans are for Ozzfest to return to Dallas again next summer, likely as a two-day festival, and other cities are also being considered. "Ozzfest ain't going anywhere," she says. "We do try and shake things up and experiment. We're not the old donkey that plods on doing the same sh*t."

The musicians will perform a set of Pantera classics after the set of Hellyeah at Ozzfest. Among the confirmed artists are:

Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah)
Kerry King (Slayer)
Scott Ian (Anthrax)
Charlie Benante (Anthrax)
Mike Inez (Alice In Chains)
Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
King Diamond (Mercyful Fate, Solo artist)
Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Chad Gray (Mudvayne, Hellyeah)
Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Icepick, Kingdom Of Sorrow)
Bob Zilla (Damageplan, Hellyeah)

Dimebag's former girlfriend Rita Haney has said about the tribute: “To have this event on the Mainstage at OZZFest in Dallas is such a treat and an honor!” says Rita Haney. “When this tragedy originally happened, I saw the music community come together like I've never seen before. To have the name ‘Dimebag’ still, to this day, unite musicians to pay homage in such a respectful way, is very overwhelming! In Dime's vision, it's always been about a damn good time!"

“When we decided on Dallas as the site for this year’s OZZFest, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to ‘Dimebag’ Darrell since it was his hometown,” said Sharon Osbourne. “’Dimebag’ was a part of our OZZFest family and everyone in the metal community misses him dearly.”

Ozzfest 2008 Confirmed As One-Day Event

OZZFEST--the original and iconic hard rock festival--returns in 2008 as a one-day stadium spectacular on Saturday, August 9 in Dallas, Texas that teams OZZFEST founder and namesake Ozzy Osbourne (in his only U.S. concert appearance this summer) with Metallica (marking their OZZFEST debut).

Produced by Sharon Osbourne and AEG LIVE, the all-day festival at Pizza Hut Park in hard music-loving Dallas will feature three stages of non-stop talent (with many OZZFEST alumni) and reliably twisted OZZFEST side attractions.

The full main stage lineup will also spotlight performances by Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Hellyeah, Jonathan Davis (Korn), Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica and In This Moment. Also scheduled on the main stage is a special all-star tribute to slain Pantera guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott. Second stage acts include Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. The Texas (third) stage—“an homage to the “many great metal bands that come from Texas,” says Sharon Osbourne--features The Sword, Drowning Pool and Rigor Mortis.

“Ozzy just finished an 11-month world tour so I think he deserves a summer off,” Sharon says about this year’s one-day OZZFEST. “We’re going to be a stadium destination festival for now--we have gone past doing the sheds every summer. We’ve given everyone else the blueprint and we have to keep evolving OZZFEST. This is just the beginning; AEG Live and I have a lot of new ideas for OZZFEST."

This year’s dynamic line-up encompasses artists who’ve played OZZFEST before in different incarnations such as Serj Tankian (System of a Down); Jonathan Davis (Korn); Hellyeah’s Vinnie Paul (Pantera) and Chad Gray (Mudvayne); Kingdom of Sorrow’s Jamie Jasta (Hatebreed) and Kirk Windstein (Down); and Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Sepultura) of Cavalara Conspiracy. Other OZZFEST graduates include Shadows Fall, Sevendust, Devildriver, Drowning Pool and In This Moment.

“Ozzy has great relationships with all of the bands that have played OZZFEST,” says Sharon. “We’re the only real festival for harder edge bands and these artists have been very loyal to us--there is lots of love on this line-up."

Jamey Jasta Issues Solo Shows Information

Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Icepick, Kingdom Of Sorrow) has checked in with the following update:

"A lot of people have been writing me asking me about my solo dates and upcoming shows with both of my bands Hatebreed and Kingdom Of Sorrow. I've been getting a lot of questions and inquiries about booking. First, I'd like to thank everyone for interest and second I'd like to answer some of the questions. Hopefully this helps, see you all on the road!

1. What is the JASTA solo show all about?

Basically I perform songs from all three of my bands, as well as some covers, vote @ www.jameyjasta.com. I jam with a bunch of cool dudes from the band PHANTOMS. We play small bars, clubs and halls. Most of the time on really short notice in places you wouldn't think you'd hear some of these songs played live. This is just a fun way for me to play in places that I haven't played in years and I get to play cities and venues that it is hard to play with Hatebreed. I will eventually put out a solo record, maybe Halloween time of '08? But Hatebreed will always be my #1 priority and we will have our DVD coming out soon as well as a live album and a covers CD THIS YEAR! Later this year we will get back to writing our new album as well.

2. How can I book a JASTA solo show?

My old pal Tim Borror at The Agency Group books my solo shows. Please do not bother him unless you are a serious promoter and have promoted successful shows in the past. Thanks! timborror@theagencygroup.com."

Jamey Jasta Invades SXSW

Jamey Jasta, the voice of HATEBREED, ICEPICK and KINGDOM OF SORROW, will headline the Monster Energy sponsored showcase at RED 7 (outdoor patio stage) on Saturday, March 15th at 4:30pm.

"So far I've only done a few solo shows” Jasta explains, “but they've been killer and the crowds have been great. It's just a fun way for me to play small clubs and bars and perform songs from all 3 bands that I’m in, as well as cover some of my favorite metal and hardcore tracks.”

Jamey Jasta and the rest of the guys in HATEBREED have taken a few months off to work on personal projects but will rejoin forces to prepare and film their highly anticipated, first ever released LIVE DVD in the band’s history by documenting their sold out show in Detroit, IL at Harpos on March 29th. In true Jasta form, he has still maintained a break neck schedule by just releasing the long awaited labor of love, KINGDOM OF SORROW (Relapse Records) self titled debut with close friend Kirk Windstein (Down/Crowbar) which entered the Billboard’s New Artist chart at #2. If Jamey’s schedule isn’t busy enough, he has recently been spending extra hours in his home recording studio working on his solo project. “I am in such a great space creatively, these days”, proclaimed Jasta, “I have been writing profusely on my solo material. I don’t have a release date in mind for this project, but my studio work is certainly sharpening my vocal and writing skills for the next HATEBREED studio album which is going to be completely next level!”

Jamey Jasta’s backing band for his solo SXSW performance will be held down by Connecticut’s own underground hardcore veterans, PHANTOMS, who will also be playing a set of their own early in the day. “These guys are insane, just a raw vicious ball of energy,” Jasta said of having Phantoms, “they are a killer band that will make this performance a special one!”

March 15th – 2008 – Saturday
RED 7 – Monster Energy Showcase
