Deicide Reveals New Guitarist

American death metal stalwarts has announced that they have recruited Autumn's End guitarist Chris Cannella to their ranks, replacing previous guitarist Mark English (also of Monstrosity.) A statement on the band's official Facebook page reads as follows:

"When a band has been together for 30 years, change is inevitable. So with that said, we had to make that change.

"Our long time friend from Arizona, Chris Cannella recently started spending a lot of time in Florida for work. Immediately we began hanging out. We realized he was the missing piece of the puzzle.

"Together we are a musical match. We all work together and get along as if Chris has been in the band since it’s inception.

"Cannella has the experience of being a veteran in the industry as well as a guitar clinician across the globe-who lives and loves Metal!

"So please, let’s all welcome Chris Cannella as the official new guitar player of DEICIDE! We want to thank Mark English for stepping in during this transitional period.

"We will be seeing all of you across the world bringing our music to you more brutally than ever! More...

New Interview w/ Deicide's Glen Benton Posted

"That Drummer Guy" lately sat down for a chat with vocalist/bassist Glen Benton of Florida death metal outfit Deicide. You can stream the entire interview and read a few excerpts below:

Talking about today's music industry Glen states: "Lately, the music scene has been kind of dried up. There hasn't been too many records that have been put out recently that hype things up, that people are excited about, getting their hands out. With the music business now, it's kind of hard to write inspired music when you know it's just going to be given away. It's kind of hard to invest that time and effort into something that's going to be given away. I don't want to say, not everybody, but there's a lot of bands that lost their energy because of that whole thing."

Adds Benton on Deicide's musical progress since 1989: More...

Chuck Marshall of Metal Wani recently conducted an interview with Deicide's drummer Steve Asheim . Explains Asheim Jack Owen's departure from Deicide:

"We were just kind of writing the record, and we were going over the songs. Me and Glen, we were, like, 'We wanna redo the songs.' It's like we had completed them - about 9 or 12, whatever how many songs. They were all right, but we weren't really psyched about them. So we decided to rewrite them. And Jack didn't really like it. 1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...
