Unearthing The Metal Underground

With just under 20,000 bands in our database (and more being added every day) there are more metal bands on the planet than anyone ever would have imagined back when the scene was first getting started.

Unfortunately some of those bands end up falling through the cracks, and groups that deserve recognition get lost in the endless sea of heavy sounds. That's why we take the time to unearth stellar unknown bands and point out the ones you should be training your ears towards.

Today we look at three outfits separated by country and genre boundaries, but which are all lesser known metal groups you should be paying attention closer attention to: Fractured Spine, Hieroglyph, and My Last Suicide.

Fractured Spine

When it comes to the sub-genre of gloomy death/doom bands, you'd probably think first of groups like Swallow The Sun, October Tide, or Daylight Dies.

The unknown version of those genre stalwarts is Fractured Spine, a Finnish outfit that deserves to be among the aforementioned pantheon. With gothic and gloomy clean singing, dark death metal with symphonic leanings, and dreary doom, the band hits all the requisite sounds and does it without sounding like a carbon copy of the bigger names.

In addition to some early demos, the band has two full-length albums available, 2013's “Songs Of Slumber” (available for streaming in full below) and “Memoirs Of A Shattered Mind” released earlier this year. You can pick up Fractured Spine's albums over at Bandcamp here.

Fractured Spine Releasing New Album

Fractured Spine's new album "Memoirs Of A Shattered Mind" is due out August 1st via Inverse Records, and today a new track from the release can be heard below. Inverse Records also comments:

"Starting out with instrumentals and ballads, Fractured Spine’s music quickly evolved into heavier death/doom metal. However, few songs were released to the public before 2012 with one notable exception being the very limited edition demo 'Frost' in 2008. The band still draws its main influences from outside the metal genre, often from progressive rock and shoegazing.

"The line-up consists of two core members Antti (instruments, vocals) and Timo (vocals), with occasional visits from session musicians and guest vocalists. All songs are recorded and mixed at the band’s Studio Fracture, with only mastering, publishing and distribution given to professionals

Fractured Spine Posts New Lyric Video

Finnish atmospheric death/doom band Fractured Spine has released a new lyric video for "In The Shade," which can be viewed below. Inverse Records also comments:

"Although the band has composed since the 90's, the oldest song on the debut album 'Songs of Slumber' dates back to 2004. The band consists of two core-members Antti & Timo and to many people's surprise, draws its main influences from outside the metal genre, based on the British atmospheric/progressive rock and shoegazing.

"Starting with instrumentals, ballads and gothic metal songs, the earlier material utilized no unclean vocals. However, almost no songs were ever released to the public until 2011 (except for the very limited edition demo 'Frost' in 2008). These days the style has slowly taken a heavier tone with baritone guitars and growling vocals.

"Fractured Spine has a very 'indie style' approach to making music. All of the songs are recorded and mixed at the band's own Studio Fracture, with only mastering, publishing and distribution given to professionals outside the band. Thus, making sure the music sounds exactly like the band intended it to."

"Songs Of Slumber" was released June 14th, 2013 by Inverse Records. More...
