Chicago/Baltimore-based avant black/industrial experimental trio Locrian has issued "An Index Of Air," the first single from impending "Infinite Dissolution" LP, due out July 24th.
Amidst the band's nearly two-dozen releases over the past decade, "Infinite Dissolution" will mark Locrian's second album Relapse Records.
One of the most determined tracks on "Infinite Dissolution," the nearly eight-minute-long "An Index Of Air" is subdivided into three movements -- i. Divinations, ii. Air Structures, iii. and Watcher Of The Clouds -- the track encompassing the apex of the record. The track delivers a permeating vision of our planet in environmental peril, as does the rest of the album, which is inspired by the book, "The Sixth Extinction," a futurist look at the current mass extinction of Earth which our generation attempts to thrive within every day.
Locrian is here joined by Dana Schechter of Insect Ark on slide guitar and Erica Burgner-Hannum of The Holy Circle on vocals, whose contributions help shape the segments of the song. Issues Locrian on the intense track:
"'An Index Of Air' was written as a three part suite with the first part, 'Divinations,' being the calling forth of the atmosphere and trying to read the future from it. 'Air Structures' takes its name from a Brian Eno/Robert Fripp live bootleg but is a narrative about the realization that the air being called forth will kill us and that we have brought this on ourselves. And 'Watcher Of The Clouds' is a play on the Genesis song 'Watcher Of The Skies,' but is also the shift in narrative voice where we predict a new atmosphere must be formed after humanity is extinct." "Infinite Dissolution" was recorded at Steve Albini-owned/operated Electric Audio, produced by Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian Circles), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. The album is a multi-part concept album dealing with the struggle of human extinction. A seamless and harrowing blend of dark ambience, drone, black metal, post-rock, and experimental electronics, "Infinite Dissolution" is the manifestation of modern, forward-thinking experimental music. Locrian has premiered a brand new video via The Quietus today. The video is for the track "Return to Annihilation," taken from the album of the same name released last year via Relapse Records. Check it out below.
The seven minute video was created by director Francesca Marongiu. Locrian's Terence Hannum commented: "One of the main influences was Andrei Tarkovsky's film 'Stalker,' and she [Francesca] tried to emulate that movie's bleak environmental landscape. One where the government blocks people from entering an area called 'the Zone' but people can enter illegally and confront a landscape that is always changing."
André Foisy further commented on the video concept and working with Francesca: "We asked Francesca to make a video since we’ve collaborated successfully before and we’ve been blown away by other videos that she’s made for her own project Agarttha and for Oikos. There’s a theme of mirrors in the album that Francesco embodies in the video in a very frightening way.
"One thing that’s so interesting about decay and destruction is that there’s this ghostly moment where a scene from the present post-industrial world is almost indistinguishable from a scene from a very primordial world. The video displays the slippage in the ghostly mirroring that’s both a modern world and a primordial one and that’s very disturbing." More...

The eerie video for the eight and a half minute long track was directed by J.P Bradburn and can be seen below.
Terrence Hannum (keyboards/vocals) commented: "John Bradburn has crafted a nightmare like vision from our song by flipping personas, timelines, settings to muse upon the nature of surveillance and identity."

Locrian has revealed the details on upcoming full-length album entitled "Return To Annihilation." The album was recorded by Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian, Circles, Serena Maneesh) at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, IL and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service.
The album will be released on CD, 2xLP, and digital formats on June 25th in North America, June 21st in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, and Finland, and June 24th in the U.K. and rest of the world.
"Return To Annihilation" is a two-part concept album inspired by the band’s love for prog-rock progenitors Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. Lyricist / multi-instrumentalist Terrence Hannum commented on the album’s concept:
"I think for the album concept we were inspired by Genesis' 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' and how it is a surreal narrative telling a story. We sought to make our own but we wanted to give our nod to the prog bands that inspired us; King Crimson or Yes with the multi-part songs.
"So we had looked at the novel 'Dhalgren' by sci-fi writer Samuel Delaney as a big influence too. How it is a circular narrative, ours is more of a mirror of itself, one that changes and shifts. It also borrows extensively from Walter Benjamin's 'Arcades Project.' Our story is about a cataclysm that changes the world and all manner of perception in two parts. I would say, the real and the perceived. And it is all told to you through a narrator, one who you cannot tell if he is asleep or dreaming or sleepwalking through this shifting landscape.
"Part 1 begins at the end of a song whose lyrics discuss a dawn in which all of our monuments dissolved, the next track the wrath of heaven (a massive cataclysm) visits earth, then two moons appear in the sky (perhaps the most direct reference to Delaney's novel but also an homage to Nick Drake). It ends with the first multi-part track 'Return to Annihilation,' a more metaphysical description of the changes apparent in the world. One in which minerals work against man, there is only evolution. We also gain insight into that what we've been told may be unreliable as the narrator admits to 'noctambulism' (sleepwalking). But it is intentionally unclear if this is his state or the state of everyone. More...
