Background
Skid Row is made of up five talented young men from New Jersey all the way to Canada. Vocalist Sebastian Bach, guitarists Scotti Hill and Dave "Snake" Sabo, bassist Rachel Bolan, and drummer Rob Affuso created incredible music that could never be surpassed. "We stand and we won't fall, we're one and one for all, the writing's on the wall, we are the youth gone wild" sums up what Skid Row is about. Just being yourself, having fun, and saying "f*** you" to anyone who thinks otherwise. Skid Row made their mark on the music business in the late '80s and early '90s, and they all lived to talk about it. This is the story of Skid Row...
Skid Row was first formed in New Jersey in 1986 when guitarist Dave Sabo was working at a local guitar store and met bassist Rachel Bolan. They started talking and combining their ideas for songs and clicked like THAT. Bolan had known guitarist Scotti Hill from a previous band they were in. And Sabo had done the same with drummer Rob Affuso. So, all four of them got together, but, there was only a slight problem, they didn't have a lead singer...
After auditioning hundreds of singers and having no luck what-so-ever, ( except for Matt Fallon, Skid Row's first lead singer who "sounded too much like Jon Bon Jovi" and was later fired ) they had heard about a Canadian named Sebastian Bach who had recently sung at a music producer's wedding. So, the four guys sent Sebastian a demo tape. Sebastian remembers saying, " I hoped it wouldn't be good ( the demo tape.) And then when I played it, I said, 'Dammit to hell, this is good!'" So, they flew Sebastian all the way from Canada to NJ, and the guys knew right away it was meant to be. Sebastian was just perfect for this band in every way. The 6-foot 3 wildman demostrated everything Skid Row was about.
In 1989, Skid Row released their self-titled debut album. It was a HUGE success, and they were one of the biggest heavy rock bands of the time. Their biggest hit, "18 and Life," was the most requested song on MTV for many weeks on end. Teenagers just loved them for their bad attitude, rebellion, and especially for their hit "Youth Gone Wild," which was pretty much the national anthem of that year.
Now, before Skid Row ever made a second album, they were already off to Japan, Russia, and the U.S. on a worldwide tour. In late 1991, they released their second album, "Slave To The Grind," which amazingly debuted at #1.It was released in two different versions: The original one had a "rowdy song with the title containing a four lettered word," and on the other version, the song was removed and replaced with another song. Slave to the Grind was a major success and sent Skid Row on another worldwide tour with bands like Guns N' Roses and Pantera.
So, by 1992, Skid Row had already been to the Pacific Rim, Brazil, Japan again, and all over the U.S. They didn't really have any ideas for songs, so they released "B-Side Ourselves," a compilation of cover songs by Kiss, The Ramones, Judas Priest, Jimi Hendrix, and Rush. "B-Side Ourselves" was mainly released because the fans were having a very hard time trying to get a hold of these b-sides, so Skid Row released it as an album.
Skid Row seemed to fade away after that, with the new introduction to alternative and rap music. It wasn't until three years later in 1995 that Skid Row released their 4th and final album, "Subhuman Race." There were some hit songs on "Subhuman," but Skid Row's videos were rarely seen on MTV anymore. After doing another worldwide tour, Skid Row broke up in early 1997 after turning down a show with Kiss, their biggest role models when they were young.
Skid Row never did break up COMPLETELY, they just kicked out Sebastian. The other 4 guys hired a new lead singer, Shawn McCabe, and formed Ozone Monday. Ozone Monday never saw an album release, and since then Shawn McCabe is out of the band ( as well as Rob Affuso ). The supposed new "Skid Row" is back, with John Solinger from the Texas band Solinger as front-man and Charlie Mills on the drums. Nothing is known about a new album yet...

Skid Row Guitarist Slams Sebastian Bach
James Allman of Baconmusic spoke to SKID ROW guitarist Scotti Hill last night (Saturday, November 24) backstage at the Rock City in Nottingham, England. Watch the 10-minute interview below. An excerpt from the chat follows:
Baconmusic: What's the latest news on Dave "Snake" Sabo? Is he still a member of SKID ROW?
Scotti: "Snake is a member of SKID ROW. He's also got some legal troubles this year and that's keeping him in America. He manages the band DOWN, so since he can't come over here right now — 'cause the judge won't let him; the judge said, 'You can't leave the country until this is all cleared up' — he's hanging with the boys from DOWN who are doing really good. They've got a kick-ass record out right now."
Baconmusic: There's a lot of rumors that he's not too well health-wise.
Scotti: "He's had some health issues, but no… He's good to go, he's good to go. As a matter of fact, he's gonna do some shows with us in January out West — in California, up through Vegas, Salt Lake City and all that stuff."
Baconmusic: So tell us about who is filling in [on this tour]?
Scotti: "We've got Ryan Cook from the band HAIR OF THE DOG — kick-ass band; we've been friends with Ryan for a long time. He was good enough to learn the songs in a week, sat down, one rehearsal, [and] it was like he was good to go. He's a good friend, we've known him for a long time. He's good for the band, he's good for the morale, man — he's a positive influence out here and… [turns to camera, joking] So fuck Snake. Snake, I love you, brother."
Baconmusic: If Snake ever did have to quit the band, do you think it would be still OK for SKID ROW to continue with just two original members?
Scotti: "[I] couldn't tell you that. I don't know what we would do. Because he's an integral part of the writing process and the live show and all that — he basically started the band. I don't know if Rachel [Bolan, bass] and I would go on or do something else. Man, I take this shit day to day. I didn't expect to be here in 2007 sitting in Rock City [in Nottingham, England] down in the basement doing an interview, you know?! It's all gravy."
Baconmusic: Sebastian Bach said in a recent interview, and I quote, "The SKID ROW of 2007 are wrecking the name worse than can ever be wrecked." What have you gotta say in response to that?
Scotti: "Blow it out your ass, buddy. Whatever, dude! Go do your fuckin' thing and just forget about it. We had a good run — we got a good run together. Leave it alone, man! He's got a new record coming out. Why don't he worry about his new record?"
Baconmusic: Or he can keep licking Axl Rose's ass.
Scotti: "If that's what makes you happy, that's what makes you happy. Sure." More...
Sebastian Bach Checks In From Tour
SEBASTIAN BACH (ex-SKID ROW) has issued the following update:
"Cincinnatti Ohio WEBN FM parking lot - in the middle of the national radio tour. Sitting in the parking lot of WEBN radio in Cincinnati Ohio, waiting to go live on air in person with Fritz. Just drove here from Dayton where we played a bunch of new songs on WTUE with Bman (thanks dude!). Was on the air in person this morning at 7:45 am in Columbus Ohio where we played a lot of Angel Down on the Morning Blitz and had a great time with Blazor & Mo. Premiered the song 'Falling Into You' this morning in Columbus. It feels so great to play the new music on the air across the country!
I have never done this before. I have never gone on tour without playing concerts. It's alot of travel but well worth it. If I was doing shows there would be little chance of me going to a radio station at 7:45 am. This is a great way to let people hear the new album. The whole list of all the radio stations I am going to is on the myspace page. I will be at every station, live in person, playing fresh cuts off Angel Down, which finally hits stores on November 20! Tune into your local station to hear the new album, or come down to the station and get a free autographed poster as long as we got 'em!
In the current issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, on newsstands now, 'Back In The Saddle' off Angel Down is listed at #2 on the Editors Hotlist of Favorite Songs, Videos, or Albums Of The Month. This is a big honor and I freaked out in the airport when I saw it! Glad you dig it ROLLING STONE! Thanks alot for the support!
For the second time this month, I am going on MTV's Total Request Live. I will be a judge in the Rockband Video Game Contest on MTV's TRL on November 15! Check it out !"
Angel Down, will be released on November 20th via a joint-venture between Merovingian Music, Ltd. (MRV) and Bach's Get Off My Bach Productions, and distributed worldwide through Caroline/EMI Music Group.
Produced by Roy Z (BRUCE DICKINSON, HALFORD, JUDAS PRIEST), and recorded at Sound City Studios and Under City Studios in Los Angeles, CA, the album features the following tracklisting: 'Angel Down', 'You Don't Understand', 'Back In The Saddle' (AEROSMITH cover featuring GUNS N' ROSES' Axl Rose), '(Love Is) A Bitchslap' (featuring Axl Rose), 'Stuck Inside' (featuring Axl Rose), 'American Metalhead', 'Negative Light', 'Live & Die', 'By Your Side', 'Our Love Is A Lie', 'Take You Down With Me', 'Stabbin' Daggers', 'You Bring Me Down', 'Falling Into You'.
Sebastian Bach Speaks On New Album
SEBASTIAN BACH spoke to /Rockconfidential.com recently about a number of topics including his new solo record, Angel Down. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Rockconfidential.com: It’s been a few years since we’ve got to hear a true Sebastian Bach CD. It’s got to feel good knowing that Angel Down is just around the corner.
Bach: "Absolutely! I’ve been working on Angel Down for seven years. I did a record in 2005 that was under the radar called Absence of Apathy for a project called Frameshift II. The first Frameshift project featured James LaBrie from DREAM THEATER. It’s progressive metal and it may as well have been called a Sebastian Bach record. I co-wrote seven songs on that record. Metal Edge named it one of the top metal records of 2005. Angel Down is more what you’d expect from me. It’s hard-ass rock that is fun and real energetic. If you dig metal screams you will definitely dig Angel Down! I made sure there were lots of screams on the record."
Rockconfidential.com: Since you spent seven years working on Angel Down, what’s the oldest track on the record?
Bach: "The oldest track is the last track that I wrote with Desmond Child, 'Falling Into You'. Funnily enough, that was 100% Jason Flom again. When I was in the Jekyll and Hyde musical, the big show stopper song was 'This Is The Moment'. It’s a soaring, long, clear ballad kinda along the lines of 'I Remember You'. Jason came backstage and told me he wanted me to write a song with Desmond Child. I said, 'Killer! Do it!' Atlantic Records sent me down to Desmond’s house. I stood there in front of the piano and we both wrote 'Falling Into You'. It’s the first piano ballad that I’ve ever had on the record. There’s a lot of ear candy on the record, too. There are things you won’t hear until you hear it 20 fucking times! There’s stuff buried back in the mix and I dig shit like that."
Rockconfidential.com: You guys are like partners in crime. You went out on the road together, you got him in the studio. I guess you have a good time with Axl.
Bach: "I spent a better part of a year on the road with him getting fucking crazy! Axl is like a one man LED ZEPPELIN. You wanna talk about partying ’til 2PM the next afternoon and showing people how it’s done! This motherfucker is like Jack Nicholson on the microphone. I don’t even know what the fuck that means! We had AVENGED SEVENFOLD out with us and they’re a great band. We were in Europe. We’d do a show at the arena and Axl would go on around midnight. Then he’d go and rent out a club starting at like 5AM every fucking day! I don’t know how he found those places! I was like, 'Where the fuck are we going to go at 5AM in Prague, Czechoslovakia?' Sure enough he gets a club as the sun is coming up and our busses roll in. We stumble up these stairs as the sun is shining in and he says, 'Time to start the party!' I can’t even begin to describe that tour. The Avenged Sevenfold guys did their best, bless their hearts. They’re a little younger than us! The drummer was the last one standing in that band and he’s a fucking alcoholic! He reminded me a lot of Duff McKagan from the Use Your Illusion tour. The way he walked, talked and the way he slurred every other word. I love the guy!"
Angel Down, will be released on November 20th via a joint-venture between Merovingian Music, Ltd. (MRV) and Bach's Get Off My Bach Productions, and distributed worldwide through Caroline/EMI Music Group.
