Dimmu Borgir Brings Invaluable Darkness To MD

Continuing my quest to explore the Baltimore metal scene, as I've previously gravitated toward DC and Northern Virginia exclusively, I made my first trip to Sonar to catch the Dimmu Borgir, Unearth, Devildriver and Kataklysm on the "Invaluable Darkness Tour" Sunday, April 29, 2007 - making this report long overdue. I'm not sure I would have ventured out to see Dimmu Borgir and Kataklysm alone even though I like them, but I enjoy Unearth's live show immensely and had yet to see Devildriver, whose last album I enjoyed a lot. I was still very interested in see Dimmu Borgir live, both because I have enjoyed their recent efforts and I had yet to catch a black metal band live in an intimate environment (Ozzfest appearances not withstanding). Dimmu Borgir #1 In Norway, Banned From UK Chart

DIMMU BORGIR has entered the Norwegian album chart at No. 1 with its latest effort, "In Sorte Diaboli" — the first time a black metal act has ever topped a national album chart anywhere in the world. SATYRICON's "Now, Diabolical" and DIMMU BORGIR's last release, "Death Cult Armageddon", previously reached the No. 2 position on the Norwegian album chart.

DIMMU BORGIR's chart-topper comes just a week after "In Sorte Diaboli" reached No. 43 on The Billboard 200, making them the first Norwegian band since the Eighties pop act A-HA to crack the U.S. Top 50, reports the Norwegian music industry weekly Faro Journalen.

Stein Ostbo reviewed "In Sorte Diaboli" for Norway's biggest daily newspaper Verdens Gang (VG), and gave it the highest possible rating (6 out of 6). He says DIMMU BORGIR's No. 1 is nothing less than the most radical achievement in the history of the Norwegian charts.

"Because of the black metal genre's extreme expression, I would characterize this as the most astonishing thing that has ever happened on the Norwegian charts," he says.

Espen Solheim Røhne at Indie Distribution, which handles Nuclear Blast Records' releases in Norway, says the label expected to have a No. 1 album with DIMMU BORGIR's latest. He says the company decided to start advertising on TV earlier than originally planned, and if the album continues to sell well in its second week, they will buy more TV spots for "In Sorte Diaboli".

"We are in discussion with cable network TV 3 to buy more airtime from them, but we will continue advertising on TV through the end of May, no matter what happens," he says.

Solheim Rohne says the No. 1 is especially impressive when you consider the competition.

"When you watch TV in the evening, it seems like there are MIKA and ELTON JOHN spots in every commercial break," he explains. "This achievement with DIMMU BORGIR is exactly what everybody in this business is striving for: release good records that sell well, and when you reach No. 1 it's just perfect."

The CD also sold extremely well in such countries as Sweden, Finland, Austria and Switzerland, and last week reached No. 43 on the American Billboard chart. Unfortunately, the Norwegian band can forget about achieving the same results in England. More...

Kataklysm Reports From Invaluable Darkness Tour

Vocalist Maurizio Iacono of the Canadian death metallers KATAKLYSM has issued the following update:

"Here we are, almost half way through the 'Invaluable Darkness' tour and the fans' reception to KATAKLYSM has been nothing short of astonishing. Opening a tour like this is a big task for any band and on top of it, being the band on the bill with the least recognition and the only band that hasn't been on Ozzfest and tours of the like makes our job ten times harder... BUT my friends, let me tell you something — it's been the fucking opposite! Every show we came ready and determined with no expectations, so we went on and the place was full and the people were loud. They are ready for us, singing our lyrics, pounding their fists in the air and creating some of the biggest mosh pits we have ever seen in North America for KATAKLYSM. We've had several promoters coming to thank us after the show, impressed with the reactions, etc. 'Havent seen anything like it for an opening act in a very long, long time' type comments. It's really overwhelming for us and our answer to them is this: thank the fans for coming early and supporting us, thank them for making this show so great for all of us. The fans have all the power, they are the voice, not the industry. We serve the fans.

"Thank you for supporting the underdog, we love it!!!

"OK, now let's talk about the band responsible that gave KATAKLYSM the chance in the first place: DIMMU BORGIR.

"They have been phenomenal. They set a real dark ambiance and the expectation is met. I enjoy watching them every night, DEVILDRIVER and UNEARTH have also been giving 100% kicking ass and doing very good. We are getting along with everyone on the tour... and YES, for all those who are wondering, we are also sharing a bus with DEVILDRIVER, It was either gonna be the end of the world or we would respect each other and make it work. They extended their hand to us, and if I may say so myself, it's been all good. The boys have had nothing but respect for KATAKLYSM and we're having fun with them.

"Well that's it for now. Memorable, memorable... words that come to my mind. Everyone come early, don't miss out on KATAKLYSM's devastation... Be there and say hello if you see us in the crowd, we wanna meet with you."

KATAKLYSM recently decided to "immortalize" the character that was featured on the cover of their most recent album, "In the Arms of Devastation," and have him re-appear as the main character — dubbed "The Heartbeast" — on their next offering.

Commented KATAKLYSM vocalist Maurizio Iacono: "We had so [much] killer feedback on the artwork but especially on the character that we decided to keep him as the band's fifth band member... kinda like IRON MAIDEN did with 'Eddie.' We have the perfect concept for the next album art... it will be bad-ass!"

Unearth Checks In From Dimmu Borgir Tour

UNEARTH has checked in with the following update:

"So far the DIMMU BORGIR tour has been a damn good one. Thanks to everyone of the UNEARTH faithful who have come out to support us on this eclectic bill. We have another three weeks left on this tour, so if it comes near you make sure to come out and rage with us. Our friends in DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM are tearing shit up, so make sure to get there early to see them both rip.

"After an un-fucking-real headlining tour of Europe this March and April with JOB FOR A COWBOY, DESPISED ICON and DAATH, we are headed back overseas for over a dozen European festivals starting June 9th in Spain at Festimad and ending July 1st in Germany at With Full Force. Besides that, another Australian run is in the works for the summer, so stay tuned for details on that real soon."

Stream Dimmu Borgir's "In Sorte Diaboli" Album

DIMMU BORGIR's latest studio album, "In Sorte Diaboli," is available for streaming in its entirety on MP3.com for seven days prior to the album's North American street date of April 24th.

Teaming up once again with producer Fredrik Nordström (Opeth, Arch Enemy, At The Gates) at the new Studio Fredman in Hyssna, Sweden, "In Sorte Diaboli" is DIMMU BORGIR's first concept album and a treatise on modern day political and social abuses of organized religion. An epic tale set in medieval Europe, this first-person account of an acolyte is told through his own journal entries, depicting his personal struggle with the teachings of the church. Experiencing a life-altering epiphany, he abandons the church completely, and his spiritual victory is won through his rejection of the concept of god.

The band recently announced their headlining tour of the U.S. and Canada with Unearth from Massachusetts, California's Devildriver, and Canada's Kataklysm, which begins Friday, April 20th in Cleveland, Ohio.

In Sorte Diaboli will be available for streaming between April 17 and April 23, 2007.

Arcturus Rumored To Have Split Up

Rumors are running rampant that Norwegian extreme metal band ARCTURUS has decided to call it quits following the completion of its recent Australian tour. According to unconfirmed reports from fans that attended ARCTURUS' March 31 concert in Melbourne, ARCTURUS vocalist Simen Hestnaes (a.k.a. ICS Vortex, DIMMU BORGIR, ex-BORKNAGAR, LAMENTED SOULS) announced from the stage that the gig was to be the band's last.

An Australian ARCTURUS fan by the name of Vanessa posted on the band's official MySpace page an e-mail that she claims to have received from the group's drummer Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg (also of DIMMU BORGIR and MAYHEM) confirming the breakup. In the e-mail, Hellhammer purportedly wrote, "Yes, we are splitting up. There is no more time for all of us as everyone [is] extremely busy. But there has been some killer 16 years or so. See you next time with MAYHEM or DIMMU, and those bands [are] not likely split up any time soon."

ARCTURUS has yet to issue an official statement confirming the breakup.

ARCTURUS' latest album, "Sideshow Symphonies", was released in September 2005 via Season of Mist.

Dimmu Borgir Guitarists Discuss Album's Concept

Roy Kristensen of Imhotep webzine recently conducted an interview with DIMMU BORGIR guitarists Galder and Silenoz. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On the new album's concept:

Galder: "I thought it would be a greater challenge writing lyrics based upon my own story. The lyrics can be regarded as journals depending on where the main character is. The lyrics are a continuation of the background story which will be included in the booklet as well. I think it was an interesting process creating the story. I neither knew how it would end nor how I was going to tie up the loose ends. It was cool watching "the movie" as it moved on, it was actually a motivating factor that made me work even harder. I wanted to create an overall feeling of completion.

Silenoz: "We have always been visual, and we intend do to likewise this time as well. We've made a new video, where we've tried to view the whole story, obviously in a shorter version. In the end, the main character will have to pay for his decisions different as he is. In that sense you can relate the story to today's society. You will also recognize some of the Bible gospels, just consider the way Lucifer was cast away. Due to his differences he became a threat to God. Even if the story is set in the Middle Ages, it can easily be related to today's society. The Middle Ages was a period of changes, just think about the art of printing and the importance of religion."

On the band's viewes towards Christianity:

Silenoz: "We hope that people have thoughts and are conscious on these matters. Too many people of today are lazy, they don't question religion nor other subjects. I can't be narrowminded and accept things without raising questions. I do, of course, accept that others have different opinions, but I have a hard time handling people who have an opinion without any background that can justify their thoughts. If they can't explain why they are Christians, I can't see any reason to pay respect to them. I am able to respect a Christian as a person, but I cannot whatsoever show any respect for his Christianity since I look down on this kind of? nonsense. Why should I respect anything I don't like? On the other hand, if he or she manages to explain why Christendom is important I can have a good relationship to the person."

"The negative aspects of Christianity will continue. Just look at our neighbour in the West. There's a president who makes decisions with the guidance of religious beliefs. Everyone is able to see how that's going to end. At the same time there are others who resist due to religious conviction, and then it all crashes (we laugh). This is so obvious. It's strange to witness such a never-ending story."

Unearth Party w/ Aqua Teen Hunger Force Pre-Tour

UNEARTH were the main attraction at last week's Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres launch party in Austin TX.

UNEARTH have recorded the song "THE CHOSEN" for the forthcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force feature film, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters ( in theaters on 4/13/2007) and the accompanying soundtrack Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Colon The Soundtrack (in stores on 4/10/2007).
Straight after their stint in Austin, TX, the band headed to Europe to join forces with DAATH, DESPISED ICON, and Metal Blade Record's newest member to the family, JOB FOR A COWBOY on a tour that will lead into late April.

"We are all eager as fuck to headline the UK and Europe for the first time. We have done some amazing European tours before, but it will feel damn good to play a full set and put on our show for our friends overseas" says vocalist, Trevor Phipps "We are hitting up some smaller venues, most without barricades, so we can bring a real Unearth show to the people. We hand picked Job For a Cowboy, Despised Icon and Daath to make sure the entire bill was one that will keep the crowds looking over their shoulders at all times!"

UNEARTH will then make their way back to the US for the highly anticipated tour with DIMMU BORGIR, DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM.

"After the headlining run we come right back home for a North American tour with Dimmu Borgir, Devildriver and Kataklysm. We haven't hit the road with Dimmu since the 2004 Ozzfest, so it will be good to get out there and do it again in a club setting. Devil Driver is always a great band to share the stage with and Kataklysm is one of the best death metal bands around today" enthuses Phipps "This tour is going to be an un-fucking-real diverse clash of heavy music... good times ahead!"

Check out UNEARTH on tour on the following dates: More...
