This Is Not A Scene is now broadcasting "Freedom From The Known" in its entirety, paired with a lively summary of the album’s foundation and what’s transformed within the band between the album’s initial inspiration to the completion of the album, and the hardships the group endured bringing it to fruition. Check out the album breakdown here or stream the full release below.
Founding Thinning The Herd vocalist/guitarist Gavin Spielman had replaced the crew on debut full-length, "Oceans Rise," recruiting a new rhythm section in 2012 with bassist Wes Edmonds and drummer Rick Cimato (ex-Locked In A Vacancy). The new lineup traveled to Chicago last Summer to record the sophomore album "Freedom From The Known" at Electrical Audio Studios with Steven Albini, and as they were preparing to release the new album, Rick Cimato was tragically killed in a head-on collision over the 2012 holiday season.
Mourning the loss of their friend, Spielman and Edmonds hosted several local listening parties of the album for local fans and friends to honor Rick and his family, and then recruited local drummer Garth Macaleavey to carry the new material and TTH as a whole forward. More...
Today, New York City based Thinning the Herd releases another new song from pending second studio album, the Steve Albini-recorded "Freedom From The Known." Check out "Sludge" via Stereokiller here. The following press release was also issued about the track:
"The six-minute riff-wrangling anthem 'Sludge' stomps triumphantly through smooth, bluesy metallic rock riffs and thunders with great bass tone on a slow-paced transcendental sort of journey which gives way to stampeding stoner/classic rock jam-outs and back, boasting an almost desert-rock approach while being conceived and recorded in the most massive urban territories of the country.
"Following their debut EP and debut LP, Oceans Rise, founding Thinning the herd vocalist/guitarist Gavin Spielman recruited a new rhythm section in 2012, bringing bassist Wes Edmonds and drummer Rick Cimato (ex-Locked In A Vacancy) on board. The new lineup honed recorded the sophomore album Freedom From The Known at Electrical Audio Studios with studio guru Steven Albini and had filmed a new video for the album, and as they were preparing to release the album, Rick Cimato was tragically killed in a car accident over the 2012 holiday season. Following a tumultuous several months of hardships and hard work, once again restructuring the band for the second time in a year, NYC’s Thinning the Herd this week confirms the details of the band’s pending second full-length, "Freedom From The Known."

Thinning the Herd's drummer passed away late last year, and now the band has checked in with the following update about auditioning for a new member:
"We want to thank all the people we auditioned, and those who are still in the final rounds.
"We have been moving our studio - a cathartic action after losing Rick, which has taken up all the bands time. The momentum and time spent with Rick C. was irreplaceable. We took a lot of it for granted, as our sound was so easy and meshed. As we audition, the work needed to get back to where we were is an uphill climb.
"We were so tight, we didn't have anything to change when we ran the set. We were into the groove, finding nuances and inflections only present to those in the moment and kinetically balanced through sound.
"The finalized art hasn't been approved - and a bored Gavin has already started writing the next record. Looks like we aren't going to release this record until April."
Rick Cimato, drummer for NYC stoner metal outfit Thinning the Herd and previously of Locked In A Vacancy, was tragically killed over the holidays in a car crash. Cimato was on his way home from visiting relatives in Maine, when the head-on collision took place in Connecticut.
Last week Thinning the Herd founder Gavin Spielman issued the following statement via the band’s Facebook page about Cimato’s passing: “Being in a band is about being friends. In shock and in tears over the loss of my friend and bandmate, I have to think of the band. I named the band Thinning the Herd when my father Steven A. Spielman passed, to cope with the loss. Rick would want me to keep writing for Thinning the Herd. If stop, I would not be doing his legacy service. His drumming on the new record is some of the best rock I have heard, and I want you guys to hear it. Thank god for this guy, what a gift as a friend, brother and band mate. For anyone who jams with others, anyone who lets another into that higher conscious world - you might understand the depth of how one can integrate and nurture the spirit.”
Cimato’s distraught bandmates have set up a memorial for their fallen brother, set to take place this Sunday, January 6th at The Grand Victory [245 Grand St., Brooklyn] at 6pm. The memorial will be hosted by members of Gods Green Earth, Locked in a Vacancy, Nassau Chainsaw, Hickory Hawkins and of course the remaining members of Thinning the Herd. Full info is available here.
This special gathering will also serve as the public’s first listen to the newly-completed Thinning the Herd album "Freedom From The Known." The trio recorded the album with acclaimed producer Steve Albini over the Summer, and have just wrapped up the mastering on the album. Previously slated for a late 2012 release, the album will now be released on February 5th via Saint Marks Records. More...

New York-based Thinning The Herd announces the completion of the band's new studio full-length, which will be liberated into the general population before the end of the year. The following press release was issued about the album:
"Over the Summer, the band shacked up with studio guru Steven Albini to harness the newest tunes for what will be the metallic doom/rock act’s third studio effort. Entitled 'Freedom From The Known,' the ten-song crusher features an entirely new and improved Thinning the Herd lineup, revamped once again by founding member Gavin Spielman and now including drummer Rick Cimato (ex-Locked In A Vacancy) and bassist Wes Edmonds.
"An act constantly striving to not be pigeonholed as 'another doom band,' the newest material reflects more of the members’ blues and NYHC influences, though the presence of classic doom metal and 90’s grunge/sludge influences still shine through, and alien life forms, motorcycles, ego death, higher consciousness, transcendentalism and racism are just a few of the issues touched upon lyrically. Freedom From The Known is due out in December on the band’s own Saint Marks Records as with their previous album and EP."
The track listing is:
1. Never Wanted
2. Dr. Reed
6. White Liver
8. Path of Gold
9. Gaikat Mountain
10. In Front Of Me
