Background

Heavy metal quartet Mudvayne formed in Peoria, IL, in 1996, its members adopting the unusual pseudonyms Kud (C. Gray) (vocals), Gurrg (G. Tribbett) (guitar), and sPaG (M. McDonough) (drums). The group's original bassist was replaced after two years by Ryknow (Ryan Martinie). Always concerned with the visual aspect of their performances, the band developed bizarre stage identities, while their sound (dubbed "math metal" in an attempt to explain its intricacies) had little in common with most of their peers. Characterised by challenging arrangements and with influences ranging from new wave, electro to metal, the result was a compelling mix of staccato riffing, raging vocals, and electronica with jazzy flourishes.

Despite great reviews in the press, Mudvayne has seemed to take the roll of Slipknot follower. Both wearing make-up and use many pseudonyms. But considering the circumstances, Mudvayne has been a major draw at metal festivals and tours.

Mudvayne reached fame through the release of their sophomore album, LD. 50. (L.D. 50 referrs to the pharmacological count for lethal dosages) Through good reviews and worthwhile record sales, the band has created a following of their own.

Mudvayne Refine Their Craft

'Lost and Found' sees Mudvayne moving away from songs that focus strictly inward, with tracks such as 'Choices' and 'TV Radio' offering social commentary. "In the past, we used to just write parts and cram them all together and call it a song," vocalist Chad Gray tells the Los Angeles Times. "With this album, we wanted to refine our craft. People want to scream sellout, but we feel that radio came to us, and that's not a bad thing."

Ozzfest 2005 Comes To an End in West Palm Beach

Well it was one hell of a tour, the 10th annual Ozzfest Summer Amphitheatre Tour came to an end once again in West Palm Beach, FL and I had a chance to be there. For 6 years now I have been planning on going to Ozzfest but for some reason something has always came up and I couldn't go. Last year I had everything lined up to go, and a damn hurricane hit the place. This year I finally lucked out and went to my first Ozzfest. Let me tell you "I have waited for this for a very long time." I loaded up the Tahoe with a couple friends and my wife and we left about 2:00am Saturday morning and drove about 9 1/2 hours from Charleston to West Palm Beach, FL. That was a long drive, I probably should have gone to the one in Charlotte, NC the night before but......."The best one is the last one" that's what I have always been told. More...

Mudvayne Did Vid For Forget To Remember In Toronto

MTV.com is reporting that MUDVAYNE shot a video for their new single, "Forget to Remember", in Toronto earlier this month with "Saw II" director Darren Lynn Bousman. The song is the lead single off the "Saw II" soundtrack (due October 18) and the clip consists of performance footage and scenes from the movie, which opens in theaters on Halloween. Like many songs on MUDVAYNE's latest CD, "Lost and Found", "Forget to Remember" examines the concept of nature vs. nurture and explores the kinds of experiences that mold personality.

"It's really about reflection, experience and growing up," the group's frontman, Chad Gray, told MTV.com. "You've almost got to look back at where you began. What was Chad before MUDVAYNE? What was Chad before high school? What was Chad before grade school? You gotta keep digging deeper and deeper if you want to get to the bottom of what makes you who you are."

MUDVAYNE are planning to take a break before announcing their fall tour plans. Gray said the band will remain on the road through next spring and will probably return to the studio in the summer to start writing the follow-up to "Lost and Found".

"I can't wait," he said. "I love playing shows, but I'm always itching to get back to writing. [Guitarist] Greg [Tribbett] has got this tiny Marshall amp that he clips onto his belt loop and he's been jamming on that every day in the dressing room to warm up. He's been coming up with some riffs that are pretty badass. I've heard a lot of heavy stuff going on and maybe that will find its way into some of our future songs. It's too early to tell what it will sound like. I just know it'll be MUDVAYNE through and through."

First Single From Saw II Soundtrack By Mudvayne

The MuDvAyNe track "Forget To Remember" has been picked as the first single from SAW II, the companion album to the upcoming Lion's Gate thriller. The band headlines a blockbuster lineup that includes Queens of the Stone Age, Marilyn Manson, The Used, Bloodsimple, Papa Roach and more.

In addition, MuDvAyNe recently shot an eye-popping video with SAW II director Darren Bousman that incorporates footage from the highly anticipated film. "Forget To Remember" can also be heard over the film's initial end titles. Ozzfest Report from July 24 in Bristow, VA

I attended Ozzfest 2005 on Sunday, July 24 in Bristow, Virginia’s Nissan Pavilion (my report is running late, as I’ve found myself overcommitted lately). This fest was the tenth annual Ozzfest, and not to be outdone by last year’s excellent lineup, this year they sported an equally as good lineup spanning more genres of metal than before. This year’s lineup also contained numerous headliner-quality bands on both stages including, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, and of course Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath.

Had I known that both people I was supposed to go with would bail out, I would have lined up a photo pass for the whole show to give me something more to do. As it turned out, I pretty much just enjoyed the show and met up with As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis for an interview that we missed in Philadelphia, PA.

While this year’s lineup sported mostly bands I knew and had heard, most I was only vaguely familiar with, so pardon the lack of specific details such as song names, etc. in many cases. More...
