"...an epic battle of grinding guitars and puissant percussion that collide together brilliantly as a backing for front woman Hecate’s surprisingly stalwart vocals."

With "Supremacia Ancestral," the latest submission from Brazilian pagan black metal band Miasthenia, comes an epic battle of grinding guitars and puissant percussion that collide together brilliantly as a backing for front woman Hecate’s surprisingly stalwart vocals- a wonderfully well-structured and flowing album, abundant with power and turmoil without being aggressive.

The lyrics of "Supremacia Ancestral" are written in Portuguese, beautifully inspired by South American pagan mythology, and English translations of the lyrics can be found on the bands blog at myspace.com/miasthenia. Within "Supremacia Ancestral," the vocals and instrumentals can be substantially separated in rhythm, but as one they stand together without clash or disarray - making "Supremacia Ancestral" an extremely well-organized album, as opposed to a mess of noise where the vocals leave the music behind in a tangle.

The pummeling guitar riffs are as gripping as they are dominant, and the enrapturing symphonies combine with cathartic vocals to evoke a sense of enchantment, topped off with a mystical angst. Nestled amongst the crunching guitars and drums is the additional symphonic addition of keyboard that only adds to the splendour and mythology of the album.

"Supremacia Ancestral" is a breath of fresh air - each track offers a unique sound, guitar riffs are diverse and plentiful, and the album as a whole offers a satisfyingly fascinating way to spend 41 minutes of one's time.

Highs: The album consists of a refreshing assortment of tempos and melodies.

Lows: There are no signifiant lows; the tracks flow well and are rich in variety.

Bottom line: A thrilling ride of compelling black metal that stirs the senses.
