Tim 'Ripper' Owens: 'I Would Never Rejoin Judas Priest'

Former JUDAS PRIEST/current ICED EARTH singer Tim Owens spoke to FoundryMusic.com Friday (January 16) about his departure from PRIEST, the "drinking incident" with ICED EARTH guitarist Jon Schaffer that was spotlighted in the current issue of Revolver magazine, and his plans for a solo project. Asked if he would ever consider rejoining JUDAS PRIEST for a six-month tour that would feature the band playing only the classics (nothing off the "Jugulator" and "Demolition" albums that Owens sang on), Tim said, "Depends on how much money [they would offer me]...(laughs). I would never rejoin JUDAS PRIEST, ever. . . You know, that's a different scenario though. If they would ever call me, and say, 'You wanna do a tour?' but they would HAVE to play 'Jugulator' and 'Demolition'...There's no way they'd do it WITH me without doing them. I mean, it all depends on what I was doing. I would never quit ICED EARTH, and I never would rejoin JUDAS PRIEST. But if they did say, 'Listen, we're gonna do a couple of month tour, and you wanna do a tour with us, just being the guest Ripper here,' then I'd probably do that if it fit in my schedule. But I would never rejoin them [permanently]."

Regarding Owens' interview in Revolver magazine where he mentioned going on a press tour in Europe and noticing Schaffer's drinking habits one night," Tim said, "Yeah, that... You know...that thing has become a pain in the ass. That Revolver article, to me, on my end, was crap. They messed up everything I said. Never had that happen, but even some stuff I said about PRIEST was like, 'No, that's not even...' What happened was, we had an interview, and they spread whatever I said out wherever it fit into the article. After Jon would say something, they'd fit my thing in there. Read the rest of the interview here. FoundryMusic's entire 31-minute conversation with Tim Owens can be downloaded here (MP3 format, 22 MB).

Owens needs to get rid of the chip on his shoulder. Let's face it he is a quality vocalist and if he'd not been given the chance by KK and Glen he'd still be earning pennies in the tribute band playing pokey dives with a few cretins holding up the walls...(sounds like a Raging Speehorn gig I went to in Coventry last year!). There's only on Priest and thats a Priest with Halford on vox, same goes for Maiden...

It's about time Owens is starting to get some respect. His performance in The Glorious Burden shows that not only can he sing well, he can write quality lyrics. And as far as Schaffer being a control aholic, I DO see Owens name in writing credits in the booklet.

I have never had the honor of seeing Owens perform, but the downloads speak for themselves. Priest made their money and had their time in the spotlight. He has the talent to move on. As far as making pennies, PLEASE. If you work hard enough and have THE talent, you will be noticed. Local Ohio bands have been talking about him for quite some time now, hoping to steal him. ARCHETYPE is one band that should have stole him!!!

Tim sounds great on the new IE cd, but he only has ONE writing credit (Red Baron). Most of the Glorious Burden was written and recorded before Tim joined. I can't wait to see if Jon lets him in on the writing side of things. I was really looking forward to seeing them at Harpo's in Detroit, but maybe not now with Jon's back jacked up. Tim is a great acquisition for any band and I hope IE gets to the next level with the addition of his talent. www.blackenedearth.com

its worth reminding folks that Tim was out of the tribute band a year before He got the call from Preist to audition. Ripper Owens is THEE Best Singer there is... Period. He Smokes Rob Halford Dead. I can't even listen to the old albums anymore; they are just too disappointing. Watch the "Live in London" DVD Then watch the Old Priest videos. Halford sounds like he just got ran up in. come to think of it he probably did, by Dave Holland.

Tim "Ripper" Owens would never of left Judas Priest ever if they hadn't got Rob Halford back. He's said that in interviews with Iced Earth. Jon Shaffer's back is playing up so the european tour has been postponed......not cancelled like some believe. ......Tim Owens deserves respect from the Judas Priest fans. Halford walked out on the band. Now he's back because his solo stuff didn't sell very well. Owens is the man. Iced Earth have a brilliant vocalist in him. The new cd The Glorious Burden is great. Now looking forward to the future, tours etc.......
