Interview with haarp Part 2 With Concert Footage
haarp (spelled with two a's, all lowercase, get it right!) is one of New Orleans' fastest-rising straight-up metal bands. With the support of their label Houscore Records and it's owner Philip Anselmo, they've got the go ahead to spread their metal to the masses. The band consists of vocalist Shaun, bassist Ryan, guitarist Grant, and drummer Keith. I had a chance to speak with haarp just before their show in Metiarie, Louisiana to discuess their debut full-length album soon to be released, what it's like to have Philip Anselmo as a boss, and Shaun's strange "stage" presence. View Part 1 of the interview. I've included videos of haarp's latest performance for those who aren't yet familiar with their sound. A transcription follows.
Shaun: I can’t wait for everybody to hear [the album].
Grant: This is the best thing I’ve ever done. This is an hour of music I’m completely proud of. I’m glad this dude’s putting it out.
Ryan: The way it was done because the only recordings I’ve ever been on were two EPs and a full-length yet to be released. I mean, we recorded both EPs within a matter of a couple weeks, you know, and this has taken a while. But it was done right. It sounds amazing. Pretty sure it’s going to be fucking well received. Hopfeully.
Shaun: As a matter of fact, they might be, Housecore was talking about [Warbeast] to do a big show around our cd release with us.
Buick: Really? That’d be cool. They’re coming here in August 6th, I think. Warbeast is. So you could catch them there.
Grant: Where are they going?
Buick: The High Ground, opening for Through the Eyes of the Dead.
Keith: Show yall our flag.
Shaun: Specifically made for haarp.
Buick: Really? By who?
Keith: Had this custom made.
Buick: “See You in Hell.”
Shaun: The horsecycle.
Keith: They got a castle floating in the sky. They got a little crazy lizard/toad demon baby at the bottom.
Shaun: See him? That’s our mascot.
Keith: This is ours.
Buick: So you only had one flag made?
Ryan: Yeah. It was a three-to-one vote. We out voted Shaun.
Buick: What would you have a flag of?
Shaun: I don’t know. What was I voting for?
Ryan: I believe you were going with the Playboy Bunny.
Keith: Richard Petty. He wanted to get a flag a Phil.
Keith: We played in mostly the south and southeastern United States so far, so we’re trying to get to the west coast and to the north and to the Midwest, but it’s rough with everybody having jobs and working. We’re going to make our way up there eventually, so if people like, hopefully we’ll get a chance to come play where they stay.
Ryan: Yep. That would be nice. Definitely like to go to the west coast and everywhere else.
Grant: Yeah, I hear it’s nice all the time.
Ryan: Yeah, the weather is fine. Lived in San Diego, it’s beautiful there.
Buick: Sounds good. Well, thank yall so much. Have a good show whenever it does start. We might get blown away by a supposed tropical storm.
Shaun: It dissipated.
