Mastodon Eying "Crack The Skye" Movie
Gary Graff of Billboard.com reports: A film adaptation of Mastodon’s latest album, "Crack the Skye", is well within the realm of possibility — albeit not in production yet.
Drummer and lyricist Brann Dailor tells Billboard.com that the heavy rocking Atlanta quartet sat down with a film director, who he declines to name, and "wrote out a screenplay that reads from song to song. We didn't storyboard it, but we wrote a screenplay." Three different directors, he adds, have expressed interest in taking on the project.
"That'd be killer if it actually happens," Dailor says. "That's something that's cool about making concept records, that opportunity for more to be done, artistically. If you just had an album with a bunch of songs that didn't have anything to do with each other and there was no common thread, that aspect of the art wouldn't be there. But with ('Crack the Skye'), we have that possibility."

Nikkay, well whats the "Best" Mastodon album.. There are as many answers to that one as there are visitors here, I'd say THIS one! But I also love "Leviathan" and "Blood Mountain", depends on what you're looking for. I guess its safe to say that they've basically mellowed with every new album but their stuff's also become more "experimental" and "prog" along the way. Hope that helps

Nikkay - Mastodon only has (4) LP's to choose from...
Earliest to most recent:
1. Remission
2. Leviathan
3. Blood Mountain
4. Crack the Skye
It's all a matter of opinion on what you consider "their best." Since you started with "Crack the Skye", you can't avoid a reverse progression. Just start with "Remission" & march your way through the fire ants, hunt the white whale with Ahab in "Leviathan" & run with the wolf on "Blood Mountain". You've already fallen from Grace with "Crack the Skye"
Enjoy.

Cozen, let's not forget the EP compilation of Call Of the Mastodon. I know it's technically not an album, but it is filled with killer Mastodon songs.
The great thing about Mastodon is the variety from album to album. Each one brings something a bit different. Crack The Sky is my favorite because I can listen to it from beginning to end and never get bored with it.

Bear - I might skip a couple of songs over the 3 previous albums...but probably b/c i want to hear the next track more. Mastodon is one of my favs. Thought that Brann reallly meshed on Crack the Skye. The drumming definitely led the way before (not complaining), but now I feel it also compliments the music more. Almost a step back and forward at the same time. Isn't that what defines a great band?

Cozen, about Brann's drumwork on Skye, Overall the tunes are slower on Skye compared to the previous albums (No "The Wolf is loose" on Skye!) so theres no place for his brilliant drum rolls but also another thing is that the entire audio field (nice term, eh?) is much more wider and richer, meaning loads of more guitars plus of course they brought in a keyboard player, so all that takes space. They just dont sound like a quartet bashing away on this one, and I personally welcome that. ...hmm, I wonder what point I was trying to make by typing all that... erm... Have a nice weekend Cozen! :)

So I obtained all the albums and listened to them all. I can't believe that I'd never listened to Mastodon before! Crack the Skye is my favorite I think so far, but Leviathan is a close second. The track: Hearts Alive, is fantastic.
Crack the Skye and its progressive elements are what draw me in. It is like metal Pink Floyd...ish.
I hope this movie does become a reality, and they draw on that Floyd influence!
