Disturbed Guitarist Talks About New Material
DISTURBED guitarist Dan Donegan gave a brand new interview to "The Big Rock Show" about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the group's new album and the band's future plans. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
On what DISTURBED has been up to in the last few months:
"We've just been writing. We've been real busy. Our personal lives have been busy as well. Mike [Wengren], our drummer, just got married a couple of weeks ago, and I just had a baby boy a little over a month ago. We're all just kind of balancing family life and trying to get back in writing mode, which we've been kind of hitting it pretty hard. Before Mike's wedding and before the baby came, we wanted to get the majority of the material [for the next DISTURBED album] written, which we we seemed to be pretty successful at, so we're just kind of fine-tuning a lot of stuff right now."
On how the new DISTURBED material compares to previous albums:
"Definitely, as far as musically, it's a lot ballsier than we've written. There's gonna be those signature things that are us, just 'cause stylistically that's the way we perform, and David [Draiman], vocally, is always gonna sound like him, so… he's got some big melodic moments, but there's some still aggressive stuff — just a lot ballsier, I think. [We're] trying to get a good blend of the elements of the past three CDs to try to evolve into something fresh and new for us as well."
On the group's plans for the rest of the year and the possibility of live dates:
"Right now the gameplan is to hit the studio this fall. That's where our heads are at, that's where we feel… that we're ready for it, so as long as we get the green light from the record label to give us our budget and let us go in and make this record, then that's our main goal right now — just bang this out and get it ready. More than likely, we probably won't hit the road until after the first of the year, but I don't wanna rule that out — anything is possible in this business; things pop up all the time and opportunities pop up, but the main priority is, once we get into the stuio, it's highly unlikely that we're gonna leave until we're finished with the CD. I Once we get in that mode of recording, we like to just see it through and finish it."

Disturbed was really more Hard Rock on 10000 Days then anything.
But! This is very good news for me! Disturbed is my favorite band, but I found that after the Sickness they just became less...well...Disturbed. Not a bad thing, but it was the truth. If this new album truly is "more ballsy", it will be a fantastic album for me. Might mean a more metal Disturbed, and a more kick a$$ album. Exactly what I've been waiting to hear from Disturbed all along. Made my day = D

why do people hate disturbed so much? i can't find anything wrong with them. they never claimed to be hardcore or tried to fit into any labels, they're original and don't copy off anybody, and they don't sound all that bad. as for the grunt's he's not going to stop anytime soon, so there is really no point in b****ing about it.

Harvester of Sorrow is a song off ..and justice forall by metallica, if you listened to metal instead of the worn trend you call nu metal you would know that. Some people think that the song is about arguing the draft or a drunk tormenting his family...its all very emo

"Can we really trust someone with a "I Slit My Wrist" name like Harvester of Sorrow to have a legitimate opinion on what is Metal?...hmmm... methinks not."
Uhhhh??! Can we really let a guy who can't even recognise a Metallica song title have a legitimate opinion on what is Metal?
Disturbed's first album actually made me laugh with his stupid rapping and vocal... things.

Well whether you like the or not they have delivered 3 albums that have all been unique and a fresh addition, How many bands can say that they have delivered a unique product each time. Metallica can't even say that (St. Anger). It doesn't matter how many albums a band has made or can make as long as they have inspiration and it shows in their music. St. Anger shows nothing of the sort for Metallica. Pretty sad when a band loses that fire that made them liked in the first place. Of course they are the Immortal metallica which will be liked for ages. But just think what if they had released albums that were all like St. Anger, where would Metallica be. Definitley not immortalized. So again whether you like the band or not they have alot of inspiration and haven't lost it throughout their music career like many bands. Also they have kept all original members another rare thing in this day and age as bandmate swaps are about as common as teenage pregnancy these days.

Acid Rain - You're logics a bit off track. Metallica has released (off the top of my head) 8 full length albums so it's unfair to compare them to Disturbed with only 3 - lets see how they're fairing in 15 years and 5 more albums - Still as fresh? Metallica also released 5 unique and fresh albums in a row as well.
I actually have Believe, I got it off a friend back in highschool. And it's actually pretty good in the fact it delivers easy to eat bites of music, but afterwards you're left hungry. It's pretty simple stuff with nu/pop like structures and so on so I don't consider it metal but that shouldn't matter if you're a fan. Music is music, Disturbed just hasn't been my time of music since I was 15. Though both Believe and Prayer are pretty good tracks if you like that sort of thing.
Now Playing: Thin Lizzy - "Holy War"

Yo Sorry about the little sh** comment i made on Harvester of Sorrow. Forgot it was a Metallica song; havent listened to much of that band in a while, sorry. Still, just because I'm defending this band alittle doesnt mean i like nu-metal, just this band. I find Disturbed amusing. Loosely i call them metal, i just don't like hearing "they suck". Sorry.

Believe was a great album, but it wasn't metal. It was more of a rock album and I think Disturbed really shined on it. The Sickness may have been nu-metal, but it was also one of the first nu-metal releases and Disturbed is more of a rock band now anyway. So slapping the nu-metal tag on them, and saying they suck because of that, is just plain ignorance.
As for Acid Rain's comparison to Metallica: huh? I agree with Cynic here. How can you compare Disturbed to Metallica just because they released St. Anger. So, because Metallica released one subpar album later in their career all of their other masterpieces are now obselete? That is a really weak comparison. I think even Disturbed would laugh at you for that one. Oh, and by the way, Disturbed does NOT consist of all original members, as their original bassist Fuzz left in 2003 and was replaced twice. The spot is currently held by John Moyer.
