Live Megadeth Video From 1984 Featuring Kerry King

A rare MEGADETH live video from 1984, filmed at the band's debut live performance in Berkeley, California with Kerry King of SLAYER guesting on guitar, has been posted online at YouTube.com.

In a recent interview with Decibel magazine, Kerry King and fellow SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman spoke about King's decision to play MEGADETH's first live shows more than 20 years ago:

Jeff Hanneman: "I thought [Kerry] was an ass for doing that. [laughs] I remember talking to Tom [Araya] about it, like, 'I guess we're gonna get a new guitar player.' I thought he was kissing Dave's [Mustaine] ass or something, and I thought it was kinda fucekd up. I think he was gonna join. Kerry will probably tell you something different, but why do that if you're not thinking about joining? I'm a loyalist, you know, and I thought SLAYER was the best thing going. Why go hang out with somebody else? If Dave would've asked me to do it, I would've told him to fuck off."

Kerry King: "I did it because I admired Mustaine — I'd seen him play with METALLICA. He'd be up there drunk off his ass, just ripping, not even looking at his fingers. Me and Jeff didn't know how to do that yet. [laughs] When he got kicked out and was sniffing around for a guitarist, I figured I'd do it because I thought I ould learn something. The other guys in SLAYER were probably unhappy, but we weren't really known back then, and the way I looked at it was that if people saw me playing in Dave's band, it'd be more publicity for SLAYER. Now you look back and you think 'supergroup,' but back then, absolutely not. I played their first five shows, and then I was like, 'Man, this is taking too much of my time.' I can't speak for Dave, but I don't think he would've been unhappy if I stuck around."

Its so weird that King has such a need to talk sh** about Mustaine. He wasn't too bad here tho'.

Both Hanneman and King should stick to rhythm. LOL!

You can flame, but you know its true.

I thought Youthanasia was pure genius, but I could never get over the fact that the band changes with every album. Plus, as bad a$$ as Mustaine's riffs are, he sounds like an old lady screetching live.

I never really cared for Megadeth, but no need to bad mouth. The only albums I really liked were countdown to extinction and rust in peace.

I've never care for MegaDave. If it weren't for him, I'd probly love Megadeth. But Dave just irritates the living sanity out of me. I'm not saying he doesnt have talent. we all know he's good. But christ, dude, have some humility about it!

As for Kerry, I'm definitely glad he stuck with Slayer - Jeff's right, they were -and possibly are- the best thing goin. heh. King made a typo - he meant to say

"When he got kicked out and was SNIFFLING around". I bet Mustaine still weeps about getting punted from Metallica.

Rust In Peace is probly their best album to date. and let's not start another megadeth/metallica debate.

Anus1/#9 (Did you really call yourself Anus???)

You might want to watch 'Some Kind of Monster' again so you can understand it. Mustaine didn't cry cos he got kicked out of Metallica, Mustaine cried because the only people he considered friends/family, cut him off and walked away. No one would want to go through that. You don't have to like him, but get your facts straight.

anyone whos anyone should know that dave mustaine made an impact on the "bay area" scene back in the day. Like him or not, he can play extremely well. He has issues just like the rest of the population on this planet and to kick the man for showing a little emotion on the "some kind of monster" movie sucks. James and Lars were Daves FAMILY. He misses them and I hope one day they can all work it out. But Dave should be happy for all that he has acomplished without James & Lars. He created megadeth and has sold lots of albums. He's made a name for himself and he should be proud of that. I like the video. Its a rare glimpse back into the past of some young dudes thrashin out and making some waves. Both Slayer and megadeth have come a long way. Great bands and Im glad to see old footage like that.

Mustaine, love him or hate him, not only wrote some truly classic stuff on his own, but also co-wrote some of Metallica's best songs. You have to admire the guy for that reason alone.

I love Slayer and Megadeth, but anybody who thinks Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are better than Dave Mustaine don't know much about music. Kerry & Jeff are good rythm players and wrote some awesome riffs, but their solos are for the most part a bunch of random sh**. Even if you disagree with me on that, you still can't deny Dave's incredible talent.
