Dimmu Borgir Poised To Write Concept Album

DIMMU BORGIR guitarist Silenoz spoke to BW&BK recently regarding the pending recordings for their upcoming album, the follow-up to 2003's “Death Cult Armageddon” album which recently surpassed the 100,000 sales mark in the US. The band is currently in what Silenoz calls “full writing mode” and working hard on completing what will surely be the most highly anticipated of the band’s career.

“We’ve gotta get a few songs about 90 percent finished," he reveals, "and then we’ll take it to the rehearsal space and start jamming on them. I’m really looking forward to getting back to Norway so we can start rehearsing and jamming on the songs, because sometimes you come up with other ideas that might work better than when you’re just demoing them on your own. It’s gonna be cool to finally play the songs together.”

It has been rumored that the new DIMMU album will be a concept album, but Silenoz, who has already written all of the lyrics for it, takes exception to calling it that. “The term ‘concept album’ is difficult to use, because a lot of people perceive that word differently. It’s not going to be anything like QUEENSRŸCHE’s Operation Mindcrime. It’ll probably be closer to the stories that King Diamond writes. The main character is living in the dark medieval times and he feels the necessity to find god, and the more he explores and searches for answers and proof that god exists, the more he finds himself finding the opposite to be true. Then people start to believe that he is in league with the devil and perhaps even the devil himself. So, I’m writing the lyrics from that idea. It’s not like I have an answer to the story or anything; I want to leave that open. It’s fair to say that the plot is that you won’t find answers about the mysteries of life through religious beliefs. If you find an answer at all you will find it inside yourself.”

So how far along are you with the process and when do you anticipate the new album being recorded and released? “So far there are at least two complete songs and we have tons and tons of ideas. It’s difficult to do something with all of the material, because we’re not going to do a double album [laughs]. We’re just going to take the whole process as it comes. We’re going to do a full pre-production recording in our own studio and might even go to a regular studio just to try out a few songs, just to see what it’s gonna end up sounding like. Hopefully by the fall we will be in the studio with [producer] Peter Tagtgren so we can at least have it out in early 2007.”

It better suck as bad as Death Cult Armageddon. If you haven't listen to the originals of For All Tid and Stormblast, you haven't heard true Dimmu Borgir!!

ababcc, that's the most idiotic post I have possibly ever seen.

And about Dimmu, I don't really like em that much, but the story of the new album really intrigues me. It reminds me of an album one of my friends are working on, which has a similar storyline.

If they can make another Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia or Deathcult Armageddon then I'll be happy. I think that they only recently found a truly awesome sound. Galder and Barker are the only reason that Dimmu is as good as they were on the last 2 albums.

I like the fact that the ideas on this album are cohesive. The songs will collectively convey one idea: answers don't come through religion. I hope this album sells better than DCA did; Dimmu is truly worthy of major sales in the US.

I'm unique, I like bands that stay in one place and never attempt to expand their sound, I also like albums that have been recorded in a tin tuff-shed.....or at least sound like it.

Dimmu making a concept album...absolutely f***ing shocking...feh.

I like Dimmu alright....It's not pure bm...but they don't claim to be either which is good....Hell, sometimes the symphonic black metal is even a better listen in my opionion, as long as it's not Cradle.

Funny thing about the rising popularity of black metal and bm deviants such as Dimmu is that it coincides perfectly with the times....We live in a very Christian political climate right now and the natural response to that is a musical cultural movement toward something that is fundamentally opposed to that mindset.....During the Reagan/Bush years we had far leftist bands from the alternative, death metal and industrial movements....Hopefully this a sign of changes to come.

As much as I hate the thought of more mainstreamed black metal hitting the airwaves and Mtv, I love the notion of a second coming of Ozzy/Priest/Slayer/Manson type music to get the church goers all up in a tizzy.
