Ex-Pantera Bandmates Rex Brown And Vinnie Paul Play Together For First Time In Over Four Years

Former PANTERA bassist Rex Brown performed with ex-PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul for the first time since 2001 at last night's (Dec. 31) GASOLINE gig at Hot Rods and Hoggs in Arlington, Texas. Rex joined Vinnie and the rest of the reactivated southern rock covers band for renditions of the PANTERA classics "Walk" and "Cowboys from Hell". You can check out the pictures on Damegeplan.net. GASOLINE's lineup had previously included late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and PUMPJACK vocalist Thurber T. Mingus. GASOLINE were expected to play a set of covers by such artists as TED NUGENT, THIN LIZZY and PAT TRAVERS. Also appearing on the bill were local cover band STRANGE BREW.

Not only is this the best New Years news so far, I think we will all be pleased to see where this all goes. To my knowledge, Rex went to high school with Dime and Vinnie. As a fan I alway's felt we would hear from Rex again with or without the passing of Dime. Plus. let's not forget the reason we all consider this news...These two were meant to play together again. They've been to hell and back and they both played in a band unlike any other. I like many of you have had the opportunity to briefly meet Dime here in Dallas at an arena during a hockey game. He was walking up the concourse and even though I had never seen Pantera play, I knew this was my chance to shake legendary hands. Not knowing him personally, he knew I knew who he was and had no problem with saying hello while putting relish on his hotdog. We must all remember and celebrate what these four men gave to us. PANTERA can and will live on forever. I only hope that Phillip will get the same chance to join this reunion of souls. When all of the "heavy metal" bs is said and done..Phillip Rex and Vinnie can and hopefully will play music again. I have compared this to Roth vs. Hagar. Noboby and I do mean NOBODY can spit Pantera lyrics like Phillip. Having said that Noone alive can do what Dime did for a Pantera song.....BUT......if a second coming was really coming! There is only one pair of hands that would deliver the best of what Dime gave us but still maintain his own thing, and This could only be done by Zakk Wylde! This is the only man with the skill and tone to even attempt a Dime tune. No matter what happens hearing about Rex and Vinnie is a joy to hear and may they heal and play for us all again.
