Soulfly Guitarist: Ill Nino 'Fake' Live Performances By Playing To A Tape

Metalrage.com recently conducted an interview with SOULFLY/ex-ILL NINO guitarist Marc Rizzo. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Metalrage.com: There's been this quote going around that Max Cavalera has labeled the new album "a calm and peacefull album." Explain to me what a calm SOULFLY album sounds like.
Marc Rizzo: "You know what?! There's no way that could be true. Because this record, is the heaviest SOULFLY record so far. It's a mix of SOULFLY, and old-style SEPULTURA that Max was doing back on 'Arise' and 'Beneath the Remains'. It's almost like a thrash record, you know. The real SOULFLY elements are still there, but there's a lot of new songs that are fast-paced, a lot of guitar solos, it's got fast thrash-type rhythms. So I'm pretty sure he didn't say that. Maybe lyrically, but musically it's fucking heavy. It's the best SOULFLY record yet. It's got everything I like in heavy music. A lot of awesome drumming, a lot of double-bass. Lots of fast tempos, Max's vocals are really heavy.. I think it's awesome, it's right where 'Prophecy' left off, with a step further to the heavier side. Totally. It's a brutal record, people are going to be shocked when they hear it."
Metalrage.com: SOULFLY is not unfamiliar to the word "expirimenting," even soul and traditional Brazilian influences have been put into the records. With all the heavy stuff going on on this new record, is there still room for that sort of stuff?
Marc Rizzo: "Yeah, there's a lot of cool jams on it too, but overall it is the most relentless SOULFLY record. It's all 'Boom,' in your face! One after another of just slamming heavy fucking songs that kick your ass, man. There is a couple of jams on it, but it is not as 'jammy' as the earlier records. This record is more song-orientated."
Metalrage.com: I want to ask you a question that you can honestly say if you do not want to talk about it. A while ago there've been lots of stories about the conflict between you and your former band ILL NINO. What can you tell us about that?
Marc Rizzo: "Basically, what happened, I left the band.. Well, you know.. I'm into playing music, I'm not into faking music. When ILL NINO goes on stage every night, they play to a tape. So when you go to their show they play to a tape. What you hear is actually me playing, the tracks I've recorded for the albums. So that been said, we (SOULFLY) brought them out on tour with us in America, and the singer went on stage talking shit about us (suggesting that SOULFLY was 'not real' — Ed.). So after the show I jacked him. I just gave him fucking beatdown, you know.
"It's all about respect. Especially if you're a band that gets up on stage, and you fake what you do, and you don't even play it for real. That means putting your instrument through an ampliflier and have music coming out. If you don't do that, you should say nothing about someone else. Then you should be happy you've got a record deal and be quiet. Don't go talk shit about other bands that don't fake. When SOULFLY gets up on stage it's real. When you see me and Max playing, that's what you hear.
"This is metal, you know, rock. You're not supposed to fake it. If you want to fake music, you should go join a boy-pop group, and lip-synch on stage and shit. Not in rock and metal, that's not real."

God Damn Rizzo is so Jealous of Ill Nino for being kicked out of the band after the first album. Ill Nino Rocks so damn Hard live, they DO NOT sample whole f'n songs when they play live, they do it for the precussions and shi-t cause precussionists need to f'n sample music god dam it. I seen them live and they blew me away, I dont believe it was just a tape of them I heard, there's way too much energy and passion in their live sh-t to try and convince you otherwise. And its not perfect, like a tape WOULD be but its still f'n great. Rizzo needs to stfu and chill... Anywayz Christian beat his a$$ after the show. so that fuker is just mad about that too... Ill Nino rocks hard, With or WITHOUT Rizzo in the band.

In the case of metal your heritage (and the music aligned with that culture) can find it's way into the music see SoulFly, RATM, Sevendust, Ill Nino, Puya (heh almost forgot about them) SOAD, Ramstein, etc.....
The places those guys hail from and the music associated with their roots can creep into the music, often times improving it....Making it more interesting, adding a touch of soul, or providing a glimpse into a viewpoint or way of life many people will never know. These equal more instruments, variations in playing and singing style the works...
I dont care for Ill Nino myself (first time I heard the name I laughed though) but I'm glad their out there, at least they diversify things.

Every race has sterotypes against it......By being white yourself you're probably less than aware of them. Whites are largely considered to be slow learners, arrogant, uptight, rude, inconsiderate, forceful, and OBESE SLOBS!!!!.....
We're (yes I am white) also believed to have poor reflexes, cook very bland food and have the the most undesirable facial features body types. Crystal Meth and other hardcore drugs are more popular with the pale set than others as well, so we have particularly damning addiction problems compared with other races. Our religious background is considered a laughable facade and our culture to be non-existant. Oh and this is important, supoosedly we suck in the bedroom too (both sexes, all ages).
You can toot your horn about how you think our race is somehow BETTER than other races but what it comes down to is that no sterotype is ever right even half the time.
I'm white, I'm a terrible cook, I can't dance for sh** and I dont belong to any organized religion, when I think American culture I think rock and hip-hop music, manifest destiny, and war....but mostly just pop-culture..... But I'm not addicted to anything, I jog and lift and never eat fast food so I have a low body mass index. I also graduated from UofL last year so perhaps I'm not a slow learner either.
I was made aware of these stereotypes by an African American friend who I grew up with and a Latino girlfriend from when I was 19 (together a year till she moved to Clearwater with her folks). Whats funny is that even though they never met eachother they had heard of the same stereotypes about caucasians.....and some of their sterotypes turned out to be wrong, and they told me......
So maybe Death to trends and Iammetal some of your views are dead wrong too.
