Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Explains Why Judas Priest Is Not A "Metal Band"

Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds has caused quite a stir again with his assessment that Judas Priest is not a "metal band", but rather a rock and roll band. Hinds made his comments on an episode of Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta‘s ‘The Jasta Show‘ streaming below. Explains Hinds on the show:

"I don’t. I don’t really (like metal). (I grew up listening to Judas Priest, but) Judas Priest is not metal, people, it’s rock ‘n’ motherfuckin’ roll! Who in their right mind that has a brain in their head thinks, that Judas Priest sounds like a metal band?"

The Mastodon frontman already raised some eyebrows back in 2015 with his comments about "hating heavy metal"...

Brent never has anything positive to say. Most of the music scene down here either doesn't like him, or views him as the "village idiot". Best to just ignore him, because we pretty much assume he says what he does purely for attention.

^very true bro....tunes like the sentinel, screaming for vengeance, rapid fire, freewheel burning are pure ripping metal, but they've got plenty of rockers as well...they also have stuff in their catalog that is at the completely opposite side of the spectrum of either rock or metal; tunes like dreamer deceiver, before the dawn, epitaph, run of the mill etc.

Throw in just about everything in between and we've got a band with one of the deepest and most diverse bodies of work out there

Does seem like this dude is just spraying out his arse again....isn't this the goofball whose vocals ain't worth a fvcking sh!te without a heaping helping of frikkin AUTOTUNE???

Hinds is mental for thinking this. Like, I get they have rock elements, they always have. But to actually call them a rock band is asinine. Judas Priest IS metal. Plus, rock lead singers don't normally do the occasional guttural during their live shows. I've physically seen Halford do that in person and it was awesome. He's even shown interest in doing a death metal project, although I'd imagine that window has passed. Either way, Priest are the true DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH. \m/O_O\m/

I like Mastodon ; they are a good band. They will never be as much as a pimple on Rob Halford's a$$ in the grand scheme of things. Judas Priest are legends of metal; Mastodon are a decent prog/ stoner rock band thats it.

If Screaming for Vengeance came out today, most songs on it probably wouldn't be considered metal. In 1980, when it came out? You'd have to be deaf to think it wasn't metal.

I love Mastodon, but I'd also love to see Hinds try and cram Crack the Skye into whatever "metal" means in 2046. Good luck, buddy.
