Geoff Harkness of the Kansas City Pitch has metal heads fuming after posting his column on Damageplan and former Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. Harkness wrote, "That Abbott was beloved by the metal community is without question, and he certainly died with his boots on, but the only thing legendary about him was his drinking habit. Dimebag Darrell worshippers are suddenly a dime a dozen, but one has to wonder: Where was all this adoration when he was still alive?"

Another load of bullsh**. Dime was known for his amazing guitar skills and for his personality. The guy has obviously never met Dimebag. People shouldn't be ragging on Dimebag, he's dead, there's no need to insult him. But that doesnt mean he shouldnt be remembered. The fans are keeping Dime's spirit alive (Rock on motherf***ers!) 'Where was all this adoration when he was alive?' How about in the fans who went out and bought Pantera records, went to the shows, and went and talked to Dime and the rest of the crew? Anybody who says sh** like that is wasting their breath- we all know what Dimebag really was, and they aren't going change that.

I hate the fact the Mr. Harkness had mis used John Lennon comparison.
That was meant to compare the tragedy in the Metal community to the tragedy
of John Lennon's murder.
Why should he say those things about Dime, (i.e. "To compare John "give peace a chance" Lennon to Dimebag "Confederate-flag guitar" Darrell isn't merely overstating the case -- it's sheer lunacy.")
John was shot, Dime was shot.
Not to mention the John Lennon was a druggie too, was the point Mr. Harkness missed entirely!!!!
Lennon wanted peace, but he didn't mention that he was one of the peace hippies, just-quit-the-war-so-i-can-smoke-my-pot-hippies!!

I think it's quite alright to compare Darrell Abbott's death to John Lennon's death. John Lennon was a god to the pop-music world; Darrell was a god to the metal world. And what is the problem if Abbott had a guitar with the design of the confederate flag on it? Darrell was from Texas, it was nothing more than a way to show pride in where he came from. I can tell you, as can anybody, that Dimebag did not believe in the ways of the confederacy. Dimebag Darrell died doing something he loved-putting on a great show for his fans. So what if it was only in front of a couple hundred people? Those metal fans got more enjoyment out of that than you would think.
That brings me to your next inane comment. 'But the quartet never lived up to the promise of its early-'90s work and spiraled into a tar pit of drug abuse, lackluster albums and sh**ty shows.' It is true that Phil Anselmo, the vocalist for Pantera was a drug user. That was a bump in the road for Pantera. Pantera endured the rough road, and went on to produce great albums. Those albums weren't lacking in any aspect. Phil, Darrell, and the rest of the band members became a tighter unit, and advanced their ability to play music together. Now, saying Pantera put on sh**ty shows is just plain dumb. While I have never attended a Pantera show, I have seen plenty of live videos. Pantera put one of the most most intense shows I have ever seen. I get that vibe just from watching those live videos. They also played on Ozzfest in 1997. Ozzfest is the most prominent tour in heavy music, and thousands of fans gather each year at different venues around the US. The tour started in 1996. Pantera were one of the bands who helped make Ozzfest the premier tour of the summer. I would definitely NOT call that a sh**ty show. Not to mention the numerous tours Pantera did across the US. They also traveled to Europe for a few metal festivals. Id like to know, how many Pantera shows did you attend?
It's quite respectable for a metal band's debut album to sell 160,000 copies. Damageplan's cd hasn't been out for a full year, and it's already sold that many. There is an abundance of bands in the metal scene, and there are numerous bands who haven't attained the mark of 160,000 copies sold. Metal isn't a part of the mainstream culture, so you will not see many metal bands go platinum or gold within a year or two, like many pop-artists do nowadays. Damageplan were on the verge of settling down to write and record their next album. Whether it was with Elektra or not, I'm not certain. Damageplan were not about to fade away. Darrell and his brother (the drummer for Damageplan) were determined to keep on playing metal and having a good time while doing it. They made that pretty clear, through their continuous touring, and numerous website postings.
Dimebag Darrell Abbott was not legendary for his drinking. Yes, he was a party animal. But that's not what people remember him for. If you ever met the man, he would show you nothing but friendliness. It wasn't in his nature to be anything but friendly. Dimebag had a good heart. He also had amazing skills on guitar. Nither you nor I could accomplish what he had in his 38 years. Maybe Dimebag Darrell Rest In Peace, and be remembered for what he truly was- an amazing person, and an amazing musician.
