Thousands Gather To Mourn Dimebag Darrell

Several thousand fans and friends gathered at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas, Tuesday night to mourn Damageplan/ Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

The inside of the cavernous convention center was filled with flowers and oversized magazine covers featuring Abbott, according to The Dallas Morning News. Among the musicians on hand to pay tribute were guitarists Zakk Wylde and Eddie Van Halen.

"I'm here for the same reason as everyone else, to give some love back," said Van Halen, who, along with Wylde, reportedly downed shots of booze as he spoke.

"This guy was full of life. He lived and breathed rock and roll." Van Halen held his cell phone up to the microphone and played a profanity-laced message left by an excited Abbott after a concert he played with Van Halen.

"I just wanted to give you a ... call to tell you thank you so ... much, man, for the most awesome, uplifting, euphoric, spiritual rock and roll extravaganza ever," Abbott said in the message to Van Halen, according to reports.

"A whole part of my life is gone," said Wylde, described as red-eyed and visibly upset.

Former Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell was among the performers at the event, which also featured tributes from Abbott's ex-Pantera bandmate Rex Brown and the guitarist's brother, Damageplan/ Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul.

Paul took the stage, patted a cardboard cut-out of his brother holding a guitar and encouraged the fans to yell "Dimebag!," according to an Associated Press report. He told the crowd that Abbott gave it his all during every show and "went down" doing what he loved.

A private funeral for Abbott — who was among four people shot and killed during a Damageplan concert at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8 — was held earlier in the day; Cantrell also reportedly performed at the funeral. Much as they did at a vigil outside Alrosa Villa, fans gathered in the parking lot of the convention center before the memorial to drink beer and crank out Pantera and Damageplan tunes, according to the Morning News report.

"Let us remember his happiness," Nick Bowcott, former guitarist with the metal band Grim Reaper, told the crowd. "He never lost sight of where he came from. He started as a fan, and he was always a fan." The ceremony also featured screenings of music videos and home movies.

Former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo — who publicly feuded with Abbott for the past few years and is featured on the cover of the latest issue of Metal Hammer saying that Darrell should be "severely beaten" in an interview conducted before the guitarist's murder — was reportedly barred from the service. Other attendees included former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez, ex-Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares and Slipknot members Jim Root, Corey Taylor and Paul Gray.

What kind of f***ing world do we live in where
someone even contemplates doing that sort of
sh**? It's hard to stomache the fact that entertainers
aren't safe from d***head's with guns up on stage.

NEVER let DIME BAG DARREL'S name die. NOW THAT WOULD BE THE TRAGEDY!! so i ask when you read this to put in vulgar display of power....go to the F***ING HOSTILE and crank it in tribute to dime. I hope that if anything, venues will now send each crowd member through some sort of metal detector. From my experience, some clubs do and some dont, but hopefully ALL of them will do it now. But this sicko f*ck Nathan was on a mission, so he could have waited outside at the bus or something, who f*cking knows. Its f*cked up people do sh** like this!

To this day its still f*cking hard for me to accept this!!

Well, Im sure Dime's spirit was in that convention center and visited every single person and put his arms around them as they mourned, and he threw back a few shots of his own along with Zakk and the rest. "The music doesn't f*cking stop brother!" Life goes on and "Dime" you will be sorely missed!
Grabbing another cold one and jam out to Damageplan's "Explode", thats what im gonna f*cking do.
"I dedicate this one to Dime! Drink uP!"

I saw Pantera back in 2001, they blew me away, especially Dime's sub-machine gun like fire coming out of the amps... nearly took my head off! I was amazed at the fact that all this heavy guitar was being played but by one; DIME BAG...After that concert he was ranked amongst the greatest guitars I know to be. When I heard the news, I was shocked, I wanted to cry but I didn't. Last Friday my good freind and I got really drunk @ my place, it was to celebrate Dime's life. We watched Pantera's home video III and you saw the type of perosn he was...that's all I have to say for now
Dime you will truly be missed by all
my dearst respects to all involved
RIP from Canada

Dimebag Darrell was the whole reason i got into metal.I was driving down a country road at night in my stepdads friends car and he was listening to pantera. The second Mouth For War started balring on the speakers i discovered that the reason my life didnt seem complete is because i never listened to metal.since then "Dimebag" Darrell Abott was my idol.just recently i took upplaying the guitar so i could follow in his footsteps.People at school joke about it and laugh at me.they all say"ha hes dead and he aint coming back".well i know he isnt coming back but that doesnt mean i have toabandon him. i idolize him in death more than in life.I will make sure his memory and legacy lives on...at least in my mind it will. R.I.P Dimebag Darrell Abott "THE FIRST COMBOY IN HELL"

and remember metal is for life...not just for christmas
