Dimebag Darrell Dies In Gunshooting

Band Photo: Damageplan (?)
A gunman opened fire Wednesday night during a heavy metal concert in Columbus, killing four people -- including at least one member of the band -- and critically wounding at least two others before a police officer shot and killed him, according to Columbus police.
The attacker leapt onstage as the group, Damageplan, performed, and began "targeting members in the band," Sgt. Brent Mull said.
Two others were injured in the incident, although the nature of their injuries was not clear.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunman initially shot and killed the band's guitarist, Dimebag Darrell. Darrell, 38, and his brother, Vinnie Paul, 40, are former members of Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s. Their father is Jerry Abbott, a country and western songwriter and producer.
Police were notified of the shooting at the Alrosa Villa nightclub on the city's north end around 10:18 p.m. ET, Mull said. A uniformed police officer who was in the area slipped into the venue from a back entrance, confronted the gunman during the rampage and killed him.
"If not for the officer who showed up, there would have been more dead," Mull said.
Police have roped off a huge area of the nightclub's parking lot, as 60 detectives question hundreds of witnesses. Police have brought in buses to keep the witnesses warm as they wait to be questioned.
Calvin Bota said he saw the shooting from the mosh pit right in front of the stage, shortly after the band began playing.
"Somebody came -- I don't know where they came from, out of the audience or whatnot -- but they come onto (the) stage and ... he shot the guitarist at first, fired a couple of other shots and then he hid behind the stage a little bit," Bota told WSYX.
"Everybody started scattering, you know, there's mayhem everywhere. And then a police officer came into the building, you know, came in professional with his gun raised and then he proceeded to shoot the guy."
Gerald Caudill told WSYX the gunman shot the guitarist at least four times.
"I was up close to the stage and I just saw some guy run up on the side of the stage and I heard some shots and I saw (drummer) Vinnie Paul and somebody jumped on top of Vinnie, and the guy just stayed around the stage and started shooting other people," Caudill said.
"I saw wounded people all over the place, out in the parking lot, inside," he said. "It just didn't sound like gunshots or anything, it didn't occur to me that something like that was happening."
UPDATE: The name of the gunman and additional details have been posted in followup articles.
UPDATE: More details after press conference here.

This is f**ked up... bigtime..
I was never even a Pantera fan, but I knew well who Dimebag was. He was also a big fan of Kiss (like me).
It's messed up when some lunatic takes someone else's life like that. What's the point? In a way I wish the killer wasn't shot so that he could be beaten to death instead by the crowd.

18. writes:
This is a sad day. Very sad indeed. And reports say the guy who did it was screaming about the breakup of Pantera, I fail to see how this helps it. On the positive side local news (atleast in detroit) is covering the story as well as CNN and MSNBC, nice to see they don't completely ignore our scene. On the negative they say "Damageplan guitarist dead", well the amazing motherf***er has a name and it wouldn't hurt to use it. I raise my glass to a fine man.

19. writes:
Just heard the news here in England and I have to say that I am as shocked as every other motherf***er that has wrote in. As far as I have heard Dimebag was the only band member killed in the shooting. Either way a great guitarist has left us and will always be remembered by all true metal fans.

20. writes:
f*** man, I was and still am a Pantera fan, not much of a Damageplan fan though. Regardless Dimebag Darrell was f***ing incredible and influential guitarist. How could someone selfishly shot him and why? Every motherf***ing metal head should raise your glass and spark one up for such a great guitarist, musician and man. You will be dearly missed. And when I get to heaven I'm going to hunt down the man that killed Dimebag and kill him again and again......R.I.P. hail the greenleaf

THIS IS SO SAD I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY!!
my condolences to the Abbot family, who've lost a wonderful person in such a sad way.

Great security! How the f*** could this happen. I saw a guy rush phil from the side of the stage at a SJR show earlier in the year. I'm not sure what it was about, but damn. Guess we'll never know the true motive. Doesn't matter. Dime's gone & metal will never be the same.

You never know when some lunatic might pop on stage and try to take you out because of something you might have written in one of your songs or something you might have said in an interview.
My condolences go out to the families of all the victims of this tragedy

The last time I saw D.D. was in October at Bogart's in Cincinnati. They opened for Disturbed on their mini tour and it absolutely friggin rocked. He made a reference to all the Pantera shirts in the audience, and assured everyone that it was neither his or Vinnie's fault to not carry on as Pantera.
They closed the show dedicating a song to all the fans that have stuck with them from the beginning.
It was a classic powerful riff created by Darryl and loved by all.

As I heard the news I am in a state of shock. Don't really know what this a$$ could have been thinking but I remember that metal has always had these problems in one form or another. To me it was always Mayhem for Black Metal, Deicide for Death Metal and Pantera for Heavy Metal. Mayhem had its problems with suicide and Murder but are still going strong. Deicide just got a facelift as they have parted ways with there original Guitarists & Pantera Parted ways with Phil in SuperJoint Ritual, Rex in Crowbar, & Dime and Vinnie heading up Damage Plan. This unfortunately is new territory but through METAL we shall PERSAVIRE and remember DimeBag Darrell Not only as a Musician but as a Human being & Inspiration to us all.

dont get me wrong i loved dimebag and respected pantera deeply
but this is the problem with the glorification of media stars. actors, actresses, athletes, and musicians are treated and idolized like gods instead of real people. while admiring what they do i also realize that this is their specialty. this is their career and they are good at it. so why should they be treated any differently than the best doctors or lawyers in the world. We pamper and immortalize these people on the television, radio, magazines, news, and any other source of widely viewed information. then people become way to attached and start to rationalize irrational actions.
take it for what it is so that this kind of chicken sh** behavior doesnt repeat itself.
