Metalunderground.com's 2004 "Best Metal Album of The Year" Award Announced

This year, Metalunderground.com is figuratively handing out an award of its own for "Best Metal Album of The Year." Everyone else hands out "best of year" awards or lists, so why shouldn't we? Afterall, the staff here at metalunderground.com has very diverse tastes, and we know our metal. So this year I asked each of our writers to pick their top 5 albums of 2004 and rank them form 1 to 5. What I saw was a lot of different opinions, but among the differences, two albums rose to the top.

Without further ado...[drum roll, please]...the winner of Metalunderground.com's "Best Metal Album of The Year" honor for 2004 is:

Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake

Honorable mentions to the close runner-up:

Nightwish - Once

This year was really a landmark year in metal. There were more incredible releases and tours than I can even remember, and more than I recall from years past. So many good albums came out that solid releases from metal stalwarts like Megadeth and Anthrax did not even get a vote - yet those are very good albums as well.

While everyone will have their own personal tastes, I've decided to publish the entire list (ordered by points allotted) in order to get some of the lesser known names out to our readers. If there's a band in this list that you haven't heard of, they are probably worth checking out. Here are all of the bands that were voted for:

Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake - 15
Nightwish - Once - 11
Machine Head - Through The Ashes of Empires - 5
Velvet Cacoon - Genevieve - 5
Sirenia - An Elixir For Existence - 5
Shadows Fall - The War Within - 5
Chevelle - This Kind of Thinking - 5
Unearth - The Oncoming Storm - 4
Xasthur - To Violate the Oblivious - 4
Misery Signals - Of Malice and the Magnum Heart - 4
Mastodon - Leviathan - 4
My Dying Bride - Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light - 4
Marilyn Manson - Lest We Forget: The Best of - 4
Vader - The Beast - 3
1349 - Beyond the Apocalypse - 3
Cataract - With Triumph Comes Loss - 3
Motorhead - Inferno - 3
Slipknot - Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses - 3
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora - 2
Samael - Reign Of Light - 2
Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache - 2
The Haunted - rEVOLVEr - 1
Swine - Marked by the Baron - 1
Bury Your Dead - Cover Your Tracks - 1
Velvet Revolver - Contraband - 1
Therion - Sirius B and Lemuria - 1
Fear Factory - Archetype - 1

Perhaps next year we'll have more award categories to highlight the achievements in heavy metal. Until then... Stay metal. Stay underground! \m/

Im not suprised Lamb of God got the honors...I love that album. Gzeis- Fear Factory shouldn't be ashamed that they put out that record! It's an awesome record, and they worked hard as hell to put it out. It is too bad DEP didn't make it onto the list. Miss Machine is a pretty sweet album.

Now here's my top 5:
5-Drowning Pool (not really heavy metal, but since they got their sh** together to make a solid album after Dave Williams died, I think it deserves this spot)
4- Fear Factory, Archetype
3-Slipknot, Vol. 3
2- Killswitch Engage, The End of Heartache
1-Lamb of God, Ashes of the Wake

1)Lamb of God
2)Fear Factory
3)Psyopus
4)Unearth

I'm surprised at the lack of some of the more well known bands. Dream Theater had an awesome live cd out this year, and going WAY back to January, the new Iced Earth album was damn good as well. Megadeth's "The System has Failed" was right up there too in my opinion.

Oh well, to each their own.

You are so right!! I can't stand all these Gay Poser , WannaBe , Sissy , Manufactured by some rich old homosexual promoter bands. That is the problem with NU-Metal. These people are not musicians. They are pretty boys with instruments they can't even play. All of them sound the same. COOKIE CUTTER BANDS. Just in case your wondering, bleached highlited hair and a couple tattoos doesn't mean you are a musician. WAKE UP PEOPLE. It's not Metal, It's a bunch of boy bands running their Vocals and guitars through so many pedals and processors it's a joke. But to each his own. I happen to prefer OLD METAL. It is played with heart . The true belief in something other than Yuppie life in the suburban utopia.

Dude I dont know what you guys think metal is but if your talking about stuff like cannible corpse, cradle of filth and sh** like that then I would have to say that as a musician myself it is alot f***ing harder than it looks to make good music. Any time a person picks up a guitar they will have their own unique style if they dont they suck. It may not be your particulare cup of tea but it's what metal is all about. Thinking outside the box. If it becomes popular so f***ing what! Good for whoever was good enough to think of that riff or song or whatever. I'm not saying i like every band out there infact I loathe the majority of new metal and punk bands Anything that has distortion and sounds good when you turn it up loud is Metal so long as it includes screaming...

Wow, I disagree greatly with just about every list I have seen. Also, the CD's listed above (Dissection, Dimmu, At The Gates, etc), they can be bought at FYE, Best Buy, etc. Not hard discs to find. Anyway, I would have to go with:

1) Gwar - War Party
2) King Diamond - Deadly Lullabyes
3) Mastodon - Leviathan
4) Therion - Lemuria & Sirius B
5) Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
6) Cattle Decapitation - Humanure
7) Vehemence - Helping the World to See
8) Grave - Fiendish Regression
9) Decapitated - The Negation
10) Elysium - Deadline
Fair Mention) Deicide - Scars of the Crucifix

I'm Surprised I haven't seen any votes for Ayreon - The Human Equation, Pain of Salvation - Be or Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer (even though it's Grind). Those are the main ones I hear everyone cream over.

And by the way, everybody in here who bad mouth Slipknot should take the time to listen to the damn CD.. A good record doesn't need guitars playing 3000 notes / second all the time, it's the mood that counts for me! Anyway, this is just my opinion, but for those of you who think that speed is what qualifies a guitarist as "good", try to play to solo in Pulse of the Maggots! This should shut some of you up!
Here's my top 5:
1 - Slipknot : Vol. 3

They didn't include Damageplan because it is not a sympathy list. Compared to the songwriting capabilities that Dimebag and Vinnie showed in their previous work, the New Found Power disc is disappointing. The guitar work is top notch, but lyrically the album is bunk. Its a tragedy what happened to Damageplan, but there is no reason to put them on the list for sympathy. It is sad to see such great musicans play to only 250 people a night and some steriod freak p***y blow away Dimebag. I guess everybody else was too pumped up to see Slipknot and thier bullsh** couldn't make the Damageplan gig. I have also taken time to listen to Volume 3 and it is garbage. If you are looking for mood or atmosphere you are looking in the wrong place my friend. I am also not going to spend the time learning the solo for Pulse of the fa**ots when I could learn something old school that kicks ass. Sorry to bother ya.

Dimmu Borgir-Enthrone Darkness Triumphant - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=product&id=155583

Darkthrone-Ravishing Grimness - The only one Best Buy doesn't have at the moment. They do however carry Soulside Journey and Blaze In The Northern Sky which are the only real important ones to get for DT.

B. I got your point, I just simply thought it was poorly brought across and a sad attempt to seem "underground" or whatever by mentioning VERY well known bands in the Metal scene. Numbnuts. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

69. FUCKslipknotHATERS writes:

For those of you who love to trash on slipknot for the sole reason that they wear masks:

you have no idea what talent is. why don't you go ahead and ask a real musician (since it's painfully obvious none of you are) what they think of slipknot. certainly people have their preferences to music, each of us have our own specific taste and if you simply don't appreciate what slipknot sounds like that's fine, nobody is forcing you to listen to them. however for you to assert that the members of slipknot are not fine musicians who know how to construct music well solely based upon the superficial fact that they wear masks and jumpsuits, that's just ignorant as hell. big deal, they wear masks for shock value. they are not the first who have nor are they the last who will. it's part of the act and has absolutely NOTHING to do with the music itself.

i'm not a musician, i'm merely a fan. but i have many, many friends who are extremely talented musicians (even if i don't personally like the music some of them play) - and most of them who have listened to slipknot have told me, whether they like the music or not, that they are an incredibly talented band MUSICALLY, meaning the way in which their music is structured. sure, it's not as complex as, let's say, classical, jazz, or blues (three styles which are known to be perhaps the most ingenius of all, again regardless of what you may think of them - i don't personally listen to any of those but i am fully aware that they are considered the most geniune kinds of music there is) but in their own right most of the members of slipknot are great musicians. mind you, sid (the dj), the keyboardist, and the two "extra" drummers are merely nice add-ons to the music, while their talent isn't necessarily exhibited as much as the other members. but the guitarists, bassist, main drummer, and vocalist are all amazing in their own way. corey has shown he has an ability to scream as well as anybody in the metal scene, and with the latest slipknot album plus stone sour he has proven that he can sing beautifully too. what more do you want?

also: i may not be a musician, but i do pride myself as being at least a decent writer - i write anything from poetry and lyrics to extensive academic essays, news articles, political satires, and hope to write a book sometime over the next several years. in any case, corey taylor can manipulate the english language as well as anyone i've seen. his lyrics may not be agreeable, are definitely misunderstood much of the time, and have a tendency to be downright outlandish. but the way in which he uses words to express his opinions and beliefs, assuming he does convey those things as such, is pure genius. i would put money on the fact that half of the people who listen to or read his lyrics don't understand what many of the words actually denote without first referencing them to a dictionary. of course, simply using big words doesn't amount to talent...it's being able to manipulate those words and incorporate them into the full context of the song so that the end product contains multiple meanings, each deciphered by the subjective interpretation of different listeners. in other words, corey's lyrics are like poetry and since true music is an expression of the soul - like any other form of art - lyrics SHOULD coincide with poetry more so than anything else. if your personal belief fails to correspond with this notion, that's fine...but i ask you again to locate a real musician (someone who knows how to structure and create genuine music, typically exemplified by a person who has spent at least a minimal amount of time learning jazz or blues, regardless of what they might play) and ask them their opinion on what "real" music is.

as for the other members of slipknot whom i considered to be extremely talented, they assuredly fall into the category of "real" musicians since there can be no doubt they know how music is structured. how so? listen to slipknot's very first album Mate Feed Kill Repeat. the album itself isn't all that wonderful in my opinion, however it encapsulates a wide variety of musical styles such as jazz, blues, rock, and to a lesser extent even some hip hop (NOT rap), thus proving that the people who created it are well oriented musicians who know how to play music that transcends the confining definition of "metal." likewise, all three of slipknot's main albums are conglomerations of different styles of music which end up being designated at "metal" but in no way does that narrow definition serve to justify the full scope of what their music is.

i want to finish up here by reemphasizing my points. if you personally believe slipknot is not good music, that's fine...go on thinking that way because it is your right to, nobody can tell you what you should or should not like - if you allow people to do so then you don't deserve the freedom our forefathers fought to grant you. but it is wrong if you attempt to invalidate their music (or any other music for that matter) based on your opinion alone. comparably, it is unjustifiable to label slipknot as bad music simply because they wear masks, since the act is not the music itself. you may or may not agree with the music or its' message, you may think the members of slipknot are just trying to show off by presenting themselves as they do, and it is very much possible that you dislike the band because of it. but in the end the fact remains clear: slipknot is musically talented, the most important/main members are masters at what they do. corey is a poet. hate them or love them...slipknot is music that comes straight from the soul, making the band something special in a music scene that is identifiable far too often by a lack of talent and the mindless reproduction of meaningless lyrics and repetitive, unimaginative instrumentation. think twice before you condemn things based on unfounded opinion. thanks.

Who are you, Sting? Damn man, that one put me to sleep. First off, you are right, to each their own. Listen to whatever you please. Second, calling us not real musicians, when you admit to not being one is more ignorant than any of the comments on here. I have made music with my guitar since I was around 5, and have been playing any instrument I can learn on since. I have also been playing with my band for about 7 years. If you must know, I am currently 22. When you can honestly prove that you're out there playing in clubs and selling your dubbed CDs at the shows, then please come talk to me about musicianship. Third, on the vast majority of thier songs, I have heard better noises come out of my cat. Music is my life, and my main beef with Slipknot is that when I hear a song of thiers from whatever media form, I dont feel the emotion or anything behind it. All it seems like to me is static. Also, I get the opinion that eventually in time (and a very short time it wil be) their "popularity" will fade. Last, when I try to talk to someone about metal, and ask them what bands they listen to and all I ever hear is Slipknot, it makes me sick. Why dont kids these days pay homage to bands that truely deserve it? The vast majority of bands I listen to have stood the test of time, such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Metallica (despite recent transgressions from their roots), etc. Those bands have were original, they blazed the trail for metalheads and hard rockers everywhere, and will forever have their names carved into the flesh of the music scene. You can feel the intensity in their records, in their lyrics, and in their stage shows. I dont get that same feeling when I hear Slipknot, and thats why I must condemn them. So please, by all means, make another speech and tear me down, however please realize that your own ignorance is shining bright when you condemn us for "not knowing what talent is," when you yourself dont know what its like to make music for a living.

ok to "f***slipknothaters":
first I gotta say that if you just wrote that off the top of your head then congratulations, you obviously have a penchant for writing, but if you had to sit down with a thesaurus just sound smart the man you blow. Ok, I have been a guitarist since I was 8 years old, I play the drums and bass. I have studied at the Berklee School of Music ( same school that Petrucci went to) for 2 years, I had 6 months of private one on one training from Joe Satriani and studied jazz, classical, flamenco and I have played rock the entire 18 years that I have been playing. So as a musician such as YOU AREN'T, slipknot f***ing blows, they are hacks. Corey is a poet? Please, I will give their drummer some credit because it takes a certain amount of talent to play the drums with in the tempo that they set forth, but he is far from great. to play down tuned guitars, one finger chords. requires as little f***ing talent to play as possible. Anybody who has played guitar for 3 years could handle their "chord progressions", hell they could probably teach you how to play that sh** in two weeks. You have no idea how many musicians are actually in here, so don't make statements that are unfounded. Your the fan and I have to be the one to tell you this. Slipknot wears the masks as a gimmick. A gimmick is only used when there is something lacking in another part of the band. In this case it is the music. I don't know how talented Heavymetal samurai is but if he has been playing for as long as he says, then must have a very clear understanding of what he is talking about. Slipknot f***ing sucks bacause they wear masks.........and play sh**ty music in a sh**ty way, and they have way to many people on stage. 3, 4, or 5 musicians, beyond that, your just wasting your time. You wanna hear real musical talent then listen to Dream Theater. That is masterful musicians at every place in the band. They can sound both heavy and extremely talented. If your a so called writer, then you should know to research and take notes before you write, and you obviously didnot. Think before you speak.

You might be right, it just might take you the next several years to write a book.

matrix, if your pinch harmonics are muted when you bend, then you need more gain, or power from your amp. Either that or your bend needs work. Try your ph's with vibrato first and then slightly increase your bend. Also use another digit to bend the strings infront to avoid clutter.

Oh and Dream Theater's last album was f***ing bad ass. Petrucci has never shredded like this before. He really might be the most talented axe man playing today. Maybe even as fast as Malmsteen.

And another thing I got to tell you is I don't have any effect pedals. So that might be the case or like you said better than you, my bending just needs a little bit more work. After 2 years of playing and your hitting pinch harmonics? Thats impressive. It is definately your rig, and possibly your bending. You can only achieve a true ph with a lot of power. It rings so much nicer. You can hear your PHs unplugged but with out power, gain, and sustain, you won't be able to really hear the full harmonic. Like I said, if money is an issue then don't even think about wasting money on equipment. You gotta eat first. But I would invest in some new pickups for your current guitar, try the "Dime-bucker". Alot of this stuff you can get online at musiciansfriend.com, they will even rate the products and tell you where they are good and bad. The only way to get good at it is to do that sh** over and over again. Also make sure you are perfectly in tune. PHs are very finnicky and based on a specific vibration of the string and the location of where your thumb rubs the string. Good luck bro. Any other quesstions?

I have been playing for going on 17 years now, and I too took a long time to somewhat get down the pinch harmonic techniques, and its still not quite perfect, but thats what practice is for. I could be playing guitar for 50 years and still not know some things. Metal is all about the intensity too, ya gotta have the balls to back up the playing, or esle it sucks. 1. I like your name
2. You have a good point. Someone could play guitar until they are 200 years old and played for most of their life and still don't know how how to play s**t on it. You are also right that metal is all about intensity. And that is what most of the bands are lacking. For example, I like lamb of god, but their music is kind of tedious. now don't get me wrong, i like most metal bands today, but the guitar riffs are either monotonus and/or lacking complexity. most bands today probably want to copy off each other either to prove that they are the greatest or for the biggest drug on the earth MONEY. And lets face it, most bands that want to do metal just for the money sucks. Just like slipknot. I liked slipknot when they first came out but:
1. The grew too popular
2. many bands are trying to copy off of them.
And i am going to tell on myself. lol. I used to like nu-metal, but it got stupid and it was getting old. The bands that do music just for respect are the bands that rock. just like if you go to www.garageband.com, they got some real kick a$$ bands.

So if you have a band, don't copy off someone else and don't do music just for money. Music is all about taking time to create something like solos and some evil riffs. Just play just for the fun of it. Get your band and create some MAYHEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

my favorite genere of metal is speed/thrash metal. I like that kind of metal because sometimes I have hard days whenever i am outside, and it helps me rehabilitate myself. My favorite speed/thrash bands are the haunted, d.r.i. , cattle decapitation, etc. And one more statement, i have to make. Metal is not only about saluting your favorite bands. It's about for the love of music. My ex-girlfriend dumped me because all I ever talk about is metal. but that's okay, because metal is my remedy. so i am going to give the salute \../ \../ to metal.

thanks ac666, better than you, creeping-death, and heavymetalsamuri.

i agree with you m@tr!x, most bands today are good but not progressive. LOG are my hometown heroes, but they need to improve on their excitement. And i'm just like you nu-metal was good at one point, but, like you said, it got old and stupid. Those bands that you have listed really kick a$$. and I will tell you the reason i call myself ~~~{$t0n3d}~~~ is because i love listening to Stoner metal like SJR, voivod, fu manchu, and all of those other bands. I hate rap, but the reason i like ICP, kottonmouth kings, and 2 skinnie j's is because those guys are f**king hillarious. I also am a sk8er. so that is why I listen to rap-metal. I'm 22, and i'm from from Richmond (Rich City), VA. I'm am going to leave you folkes at metalunderground. I'm 26 and like I said, I followed what my teacher taught me. So now that you can tap Eruption (which would have been an accomplishment in the very early 80's) can you keep up with malmsteen and Petrucci. Eddie revoultionized guitar with Eruption but playing it now is like bragging that you can play Sandman, Stairway, or Ironman. If you own a guitar then you played that sh** first before you even learned your pentatonic scales. And my dad is a hack guitarist, so he couldn't teach me sh**. PHs are nice yet always overused and ceratinly not the GREATEST tool in my arsenal, so if it's yours then it sure says alot about how far you've come. I honestly wont lose sleep over how great you are.

Samurai, right now I play through a Peavy 100W combo, Boss GT-6 processor, and an Ernie ball Sillhouette Special 6string no tremolo (I use my cheap little Ibanez for dive bombs and harmonic screams), monster cables, and tortex picks (the purple ones), using GHS boomers and GHS Zakk Wylde hybrids. Those Zakk Wylde Hybrids are a b****, that f***ing sixth string wouldn't even fit on my guitar, damn 10-60's and those weren't even the heavy set. I think he also uses 10-72's. What are you playing through?? You too Creeping Death, what kinda rig are you playing?

I said I learned my PHs after two years in a four year course. Dude the first month was about proper form and technique. The course seems slow because I guess maybe I was being held back to ensure I was learning properly. Its about learning new things but while using the right technique. It promises much better results in the long run. Like I said way back, I eventually moved on to study at the Berklee school of music and also 6 months private study with Joe Satriani. After those first four years, I was able play practicly anything I wanted within a day or two. Let me know when you can rip out a Malmsteen solo. I learned my first at 11, in 3 days. So playing PHs after 6 months amounts to d*** there buddy. I said I wasn't tought them. When did your daddy teach you about chromatics? Or Pentatonics and Diatonics? How about sweeping arpeggios? Chicken pickin'? Let me know when you can keep up with Petrucci. The you can brag about something. Don't get me wrong, you could be the most badass guitar player in the world. but its unlikely. I know I can shred. Oh and I don't know why but my teenage years were really f***ing cool. The best time of my life was in high school. Football, talent contests, cheerleader p***y......it rocked like an 800lb woman try to get up off the couch.

I don't know what berkley is like, I never went to berkley, thats up in like the bay area in california. I went to Berklee, its a music school in the Boston area. I live in LA and guitarists come a dime a dozen. For every guitar player that I am bettter than, there will always be another thats better than me. I don't play neo-classical so malmsteen and I wouldn't sound good together, Satch still considers me student not a musician and I my band broke up like 2 years ago, I've only been playing in jam sessions lately, and I would kill to play with Petrucci but I have never met the man. I'm on a site like this becasue I can be. I like the change of heart in like 2 minutes though. Berklee is ok, they taught me alot about theory, music writing. It's just more of the same though, the best teachers in the country. The best part is knowing that your in a class and get to play with the best musicians in the country. It's tough to get in to though. Just like every other college, you have to apply. I had to make a music video of my practicing and performances for them to even consider me. And for the record, I'm straight, I'm the least fa**oty person here. That I can promise. No I don't have MSN.

alittle of both. I learned alot of theory at Berklee and through Satch after. Berklee is just like getting into a university. You have to meet certain standards. I don't really know how hardcore they are about technique. You have to be good though, I don't think that they are too big on POTENTIAL, you have to have it when you get there. String skipping is a huge fundamental that you HAVE to work on. Most guitar players, self taught or not have to find a comfortable way to play. Everything about guitar is repetition. If you have found a comfortable way to play including string skipping then to improve you just have to do it the hard way. Start slow, and constantly practice over and over again, getting faster when you feel comfortable. You should always challenge yourself. The best way for me was to practice my pentatonic and diatonic scales. I don't know if you read guitar wolrd magazine but inside Zakk Wylde has a tutorial. You should read it. He has great exercises for picking. He is very big into picking styles. He suggests numbering each note in the pentatonic and diatonic scales, and then coming up with different number patterns. This should allow you to figure out your timing with string skipping. Also alternate picking helps. It slows your hand down and makes for easier transitions. It's hard to pickup technique after years and years of doing it your own way so my suggestion is find the most comfortable way to play. Good luck with that. Watch somebody like Satriani or Petrucci. They both have absolutley perfect technique.

I notice the same thing. If I put the guitar down for like 2 or 3 days and then come back to it, It sounds better sometimes. Rythm is o.k. but I find the Metallica rythms are a little easy. Slayer rythms are fun. I try not to learn all the solos by one person, I like to learn a couple and then try and improvise with their style. It helps me out a ton when I'm writing. Dream Theater solos are harder because Petrucci picks almost every one of his notes. It makes it difficult to get it to flow. I try to practice something different everyday so I don't get bored.

Regarding all the stuff said about Slipknot earlier, I'm not going to make a long complicated post or even be diplomatic or anything. What does the word 'numetal' mean to you? Or should we say 'cheesycrappymygrandmalovesthisbandsuck-metal'. We have a term for bands like that, its called, um, hmmmm, ...... oh yeah ---- 'terribly untalented'. We also have a term for marilyn manson. its called 'richkidwithagimmick'. Lamb of god made a very good cd, so thanks for at leaste making a 'metal' band be #1.
