Slipknot Addresses Speculation About New Band Members

As part of Metal Injection's Knotfest report, west coast correspondent Johnny Orlando Jr. had a chance to speak with Slipknot's Clown, who addressed the speculation about the band's new bassist and drummer:

"We got a new drummer and a new bass player. Get the fuck over it. Oh well! You know it’s so funny how stupid people are. Even though everybody thinks they know, they keep asking.

"So I don’t have to say shit and I’m going to sit here for the rest of my life and just wait for everybody to figure it out. If you think you know, maybe you do, maybe you don’t. But don’t ask me because I don’t care. And it’s awesome, because people can’t let that go."

The band's new full-length album ".5: The Grey Chapter" was just released last week.

So, let me get this straight. The band originally created masks and band numbers to emphasize a collective unit and not focus on the members, right? OK, I get that. Yet the masks have become a focal point and have evolved to be personal and individualized. The band did that. No one forced them to do so. Then members have done side projects which only furthered their notoriety, status and brought more attention to each individual as a unique part of the band. So, when members change (key members), and fans want to latch on to the new players and re-establish some connection, that is rejected by the band? I don't follow. They create the hype and then downplay it at the same time. Sounds pretty pretentious if you ask me.

The band didn't create the masks. Roadrunner did.

Short version: Money talks and they love their paychecks so they found a balance between getting $$$ and acting like they don't care.

Rebels, yo.

(I really do like .5, but there's something about it that makes it sound a bit *too* glossy)

DJ, you nailed it. I give the new album a thumbs up and support them still, but they're acting like a bunch of haughty drama queens in their PR handling of the lineup situation. Sadly, I also won't be surprised to learn their new members are being "Newsteded."

@ Singh: Wrong. It wasn't until late 97 that they started wearing the masks (a$$ clown Crahan used to bring a clown mask to rehearsals in Jordison's Sinclair gas station that he worked in but nobody was wearing them) and in 98 they signed the deal with RR.

Thank you post 6, totally agree.
Personally I think it's there best since iowa, also I share in the frustration of the band being too silly with the media hijinks and miss the days of them being obscure of all of that including there identities, although I think craig and milk still do that to an extent.

Slipknot is the dumbest band ever they just ripped off that other piece of crap band mushroomhead. Slipknots fans don't know good music they have probably never heard of any of the best bands out there like Watian or Slayer. They can never be real metal fans.

Yeah it use to be good when you never knew what they look like without the masks, then they ruined the whole mask gimmick by doing the side projects murderdolls, stone sour.

Just in case people didn't know this already, every band ever has "ripped off" some other band. Artists absorb other art and interpret it in their own way. The art they create is the sum of their parts.

Calling any band stupid and saying their listeners will never know "real metal" is hilariously self-reducing. You're just as close-minded as you claim them to be. Besides, we all need stepping stones.

On topic: Slipknot ruined the mystique years ago by taking off the masks in the first place. Sorry guys, but it's over now. That's the way that kind of thing works. Being weenie-faces about it now is only going to push people away, not draw more intrigue.

I dunno why people make it an either/or thing. There's no reason someone couldn't like both Slipknot and Watain. Me? I don't care in the slightest about either Slipknot OR Slayer - does that make me a half troo metalhead?

It's all about the absolutist value judgment that results in tunnel vision, wherein Kvltboy projects his own ignorance onto others.

The logic basically goes: "It's a FACT that Slipknot (et al) are bad and not 'real metal;' any tr00 metalhead knows this and thus avoids listening to them; therefore, anyone who DOES listen to them MUST be a poser that doesn't know about tr00 metal."

The results of this faulty equation are vomited all over the interwebz daily. "Oh, you like that Slipknot song? You poser; you must know nothing of Watain!"

The only problem that arises is when people start defining their own tastes based on other people's opinion. Which is asinine to begin with. And people that are that simple-minded will continue to perpetuate the ideals that they need to be validated by someone else's opinion.

The whole point of being a "metalhead" is not conforming to the norm. Liking whatever the hell you choose to like. Defining metal as a norm (ie: it "tr00" metal) defeats the purpose entirely.
