Pit Stories: Don't Piss Off The Vocalist
With digital music readily available through services like Bandcamp and iTunes, heavy metal is now readily available everywhere from your phone to your computer, but that hasn't stopped the live show from being the heart of the scene. That's why every week we check in with musicians from across the globe to get their favorite stories from live performances.
As any regular show-goer knows, you shouldn't piss off the band unless you've got the balls to throw down or the numbers to back you up and out-shout the vocalist. From Dave Mustaine's infamous rants, Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age chucking things at audience members, and Bruce Dickinson's viral anti-pot tirade, many fans have made the mistake of ticking off a front man during a set.
Today Johnny Gorilla from The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell shares this tale of his own back and forth with a crowd heckler:
We played in Scotland with Orange Goblin to a sold out King Tut's and this Russian guy calls me a cunt! He didn't remember meeting me the night before in a bar coz he was so pissed drunk. I stopped the gig and got the whole crowd to call him a cunt, by name. He looked like he was gonna cry.
Also a guy called "Scabby Dave" used to sit in front of us picking the scabs and eating them while we played! TASTY!!!
Admiral Sir Cloudsely Shovell's new album "Check 'em Before You Wreck 'em" was released earlier this month, and a music video off the album can be seen below.
Also be sure to check in next week for more Pit Stories, and let us know your favorite tale of a heckler getting called out during a set!

I remember seeing Trivium supporting Iron Maiden at Earl's Court in 2006 and a bottle of piss was thrown at Matt Heafy. He tried to call them out but unfortunately he wasn't quite as witty as he seemed to think and the rest of the crowd seemed to have a giggle about the incident. Piss throwing, just one of the time honoured British traditions!
So yeah, there's my little story of seeing a heckler called out.

A few years back, I saw Cannibal Corpse play in the Midwest, and some guy launched a shoe at Corpsegrinder's head. Good ol' George saw who it was and called him out for it, and told him to get on stage if he had the "testicular fortitiude" (his own words). Of course, the guy didn't do anything, but his girlfriend walked up to the stage and planted a kiss on George's cheek. Place went ballistic.
Best one I've got lol

Last Iced Earth show I went to in LA, this drunk d!cknose was making a fool of himself on the floor , slamming into chicks with drinks and whatnot...Block got tired of him pretty quick and commanded to have him thrown out...as the thugs grabbed him and began hauling his yellow shirted a$$ away, Block bade him a proper sung farewell:
"laters, ya fvckin pvsseeeyyy-ey-ey-eyyyy!" complete with the vibrato high note at the end
it was pretty funny :)

Morbid Angel, Covenant tour with Cynic.
Some dude kept shouting a song he wanted played.
I couldn’t hear which one but Vincent could.
After song four or five.
Vincent…….”Keep your d!ck in your pants and shut up BOY!”
Crowd got a good laugh at that one.
Borntomosh has the best one so far though.

I don't have any of my own, but the first thing I always think of is Bruce d***inson flipping out and calling out a fan in the front row for smoking a joint. At an Iron Maiden concert.... He whined that the guy was "polluting the air" and he was "trying to work up here". LOL, what a grade-A douche.
I bet all the smoke from the pyrotechnics is "clean smoke", though, right?

Gigantour in Edmonton, Canada a few years back a guy threw a shoe on stage that hit or just missed Dave Mustaine. He went nuts, had a fit, walked off stage for 5-10 minutes. Finally came back out, gave the crowd sh** and said anymore tossers and they would shut it down. Keep in mind that this wasn't too long after Dimebag was killed so I can see the point but it sure was a princess moment.
