Undivine Essence Discusses Split Album

Fresh off the release of a split album with Nature's Elements, Israeli black metal act Undivine Essence is currently in the process of putting together a debut full-length album. Explaining the meaning behind the band's name, guitarist Shay commented "The name Undivine Essence basically refers to the human itself. It’s about the impurity and foulness of the human way of life. It’s a reminder that people are still basically animals, and are still slaves to their drives and needs." Shay and vocalist Mike also went on to explain the recording of the split album and the band's development.

The Norwegian guitar prodigy is now back with The Wretched End's first release "Ominous." An Interview With Israeli Band Nature's Elements

Israel hasn't quite become known for producing black metal bands at this point, so Nature's Elements is something of an anamoly in the worldwide metal community. The group contributed two songs to a split album titled "New Shape/Ipos" earlier this year with fellow Israeli band Undivine Essence. Nature's Elements drummer Phenex filled me in on the history of the band, the death of former vocalist Ipos, and the recording of the split tracks.

Interview with Erik Danielson of Watain

Watain is one of those bands that make people cringe. Stories of men covered in corpse paint playing Satanic music and spitting fire amongst the limbs of animals and the infamous stank of them cooking under the lights have kept some people at bay while others are intriguiged and want to witness this strange event. Watain's latest album "Lawless Darkness" has become a favorite album in the world of metal. Just wrapping up a tour with Goatwhore and Black Anvil, I was able to catch up with vocalist Erik Danielson before their show in Metairie, Louisiana, just the day after Thanksgiving to talk about their notorious shows, Varg Vikernes, and black metal today. A transcribed version follows.

Interview with Brian Patton of Eyehategod

Fathers of sludge Eyehategod will be heading out on the road soon to cover your town in a thick, smelly layer of toxic slime. That's what sludge is, after all. The world is waiting on pins and needles for the next album; in the making for over ten years now. This is not a Guns N' Roses deal though. The musicians in Eyehategod are very busy with their other bands like Down, Arson Anthem, and Soilent Green to name a few. Conducting From The Grave Discusses New Album

In October, California based melodic death metal act Conducting From The Grave dropped its second full-length album "Revenants," and follow-up to 2009's "When Legends Become Dust." Conducting From the Grave guitarist Jeff Morgan spoke with me about the band switching vocalists for this album, where the band's distinctive name came from, and the possibility of an upcoming music video.

While explaining how the new album differs from the band's earlier work, Morgan commented "I like to think the song writing is a lot more mature on this album. We’ve definitely progressed a lot over the years as musicians. A lot of stuff from the previous album 'When Legends Becomes Dust' was written over the course of five or six years...I think it’s a lot more of a cohesive sound for the whole album." Morgan also discussed upcoming tour dates with Arsis and the themes of the album's lyrics.

Chris Grigg Explains The Dynamics Of Woe

Recently signed to Candlelight Records for the release of the sophomore album “Quietly, Undramatically," Philadelphia black metallers Woe have not-so-quietly invaded the U.S. black metal scene. Front man Chris Grigg recently corresponded with Metalunderground to explain how Woe went from a solo project to a full band and getting a record deal with the legendary Candlelight.

Chris also tackled the issue of adding in clean vocals on the new album, stating "For a musician, selling out is defined by doing something that you would not normally do in the interest of selling records. To not follow my gut, to omit a musical idea that really worked just because I was scared of how people would react... That would be a sell-out move." Throughout the interview below he discusses leaving behind the band's direct European black metal feel, playing live shows, and even discusses his trip to Ken Ham's creationism museum.

Sumerian Metallers Melechesh Discuss New Album

Sumerian-themed blackened metallers Melechesh launched "The Epigenesis" last month, which is their latest exploration of occult oriented extreme metal. Ashmedi also recently posted a track-by-track breakdown online of the new album, which can be seen at the following links: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

Talking about how the songs flow, Ashmedi commented, "It’s not afraid to step out of the box in the sense that every song stands alone, just like a good healthy rock album or metal album." He also discussed the possibility of an upcoming music video and where the band will be touring in support of the new album.

A Discussion With Lizard Skynard

Lizard Skynard sounds like a reject Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band, but behind the gimmicky name and eccentric frontman Erik Sprague, aka The Lizardman, is a legitimate force to be reckoned with. Their sound runs the gamut from blasts of hardcore fury to ambient space rock. Lizardman’s spoken word style has a Henry Rollins flavor to it and helps to make the band stand out from the rest of the pack. With their self-titled debut being released a few weeks back, guitarist Mossy Vaughn spoke to Metalunderground.com in early October about the new album, having a frontman like Lizardman around, and the dangers of vomiting during a live Lizard Skynard show

Black Tide Discusses Upcoming Second Album

Black Tide has been making waves in the heavy metal scene, both because of the young age and talent of the band's members. The group was famously promoted to the main stage during Ozzfest of 2007 after being deemed too young to perform on the Jagermeister stage, and then went on to release the debut album "Light From Above." Black Tide is now back with a new single, along with a second full-length to be released next year. At the Seattle stop of the band's current tour with Bullet For My Valentine, guitarist/vocalist Gabriel Garcia filled me in on the details of the upcoming second album and how growing up in the metal scene has changed the band's lyrical content and outlook.

Interview with Vanden Plas Guitarist Stephan Lill

When I was first approached about doing an interview with Stephan Lill, Guitarist of one of my favorite Prog/Metal bands, “Vanden Plas”, I was stoked to say the least. Not only am I a big fan of the band who possesses every studio album they have put out (with the exception of colour temple), I am also a huge fan of their lead guitarist. Now although personally I felt all their recordings had been nothing less than phenomenal, I was nevertheless skeptical to there ability to follow up their previous release “Christ O”, a very adventurous and epic album, and one of my personal favorites. A lot of bands when faced with the challenge of creating a follow up to a great album, buckle under the pressure, releasing lack lustered efforts at best.  Upon hearing the new album “The Seraphic Clockwork”  I knew that this was not the case for these guys.

Journey Into The Instrumental Metal Of Odyssey

Spokane based instrumental metal act Odyssey bucks the trends of music by ditching the idea of a vocalist and letting the instruments do all the talking. Odyssey, which is composed of brother team Jordan and Lukas Hilker along with guitarist Jerrick Crites, recently released the "Schematics" EP and is soon to begin pre-production for the new album "An Abstract Existence." The band members took some time out to explain why they choose to go on without a singer, how they approach song writing, and taking a break from live shows to work on the new full-length album.
