ProgPower USA XV: Day 2 (Saturday)

The fact that Friday’s ProgPower events went off without a hitch despite numerous technical issues that the audience generally wasn’t aware of and bands weren’t very delayed from their assigned time slots was a real credit to the ProgPower crew. Unfortunately, Saturday would bring its share of more obvious challenges. Waking up on Saturday had Friday’s attendees feeling as if they’d just collectively experienced the same dream for the entire day before. For some, that dream had lasted until dawn clawed its way overhead. As difficult as it was to believe, the festival was already half over. A full writeup on day one’s shows can be read here.

Saturday’s shows were to kick off with two of Norway’s more progressive bands - the young upstarts in Withem and the veterans of Divided Multitude. Divided Multitude’s drummer wasn’t available to come to America due to postal delays in getting him his visa, which forced the band to cut down their set and bring in the talents of two experts playing off the cuff: Withem’s Frank Røe and Pagan’s Mind’s Stian Kristoffersen. Following them would be Germany’s Voodoo Circle, whose vocalist would cause instant pregnancy among several of the female -- and male -- fans in the audience. Germany’s MasterPlan would round out the last of the power metal for the festival in huge fashion afterward, followed by a passionate full album performance by Sweden’s Pain of Salvation. Jon Oliva’s Pain would close out the festival with rare fire and what will surely be noted as one of the strongest performances of Oliva’s second half of his musical career - Savatage’s “Streets” performed in its entirety.

First, however, as is the tradition at ProgPower each year, gold badge holders were treated to a special additional set of music -- this time, by Seventh Wonder, performing non-Mercy Falls songs exclusively bright and early. More...

ProgPower USA XV: Day 1 (Friday)

There really was no better way of preparing for the official days of 2014’s ProgPower USA festival than to have gone “Full Circle” with Pagan’s Mind, DGM, and Draekon the night before, on September 11th in Atlanta, GA. For the 12th of September, if you weren’t waking up late and shmammered from the after-party the night before, you were soon to be treated to a variety of international bands: From Greece, the proggy show-stealing Need, performing their latest album, “Orvam: A Song For Home.” From Germany, the power chant-fest that is Orden Ogan. From Norway, young prog super-champs Leprous. From Sweden, the humble prog-titans of Seventh Wonder were to perform their “Mercy Falls” album. Finally (and again from the Scandinavian countries!) from Finland, the prestigious major-key-masters of Stratovarius were to perform their 1997 album, “Visions.”

With doors opening at 1:30 in the warm Atlanta afternoon, crowds and pizza (courtesy of nearby restaurant DaVinci’s) flowed in steadily to Center Stage, combining with drinks, merchandise, band members, and a few awesome wheelchair-bound metalheads with passion for the music for a very warm “Welcome to ProgPower!” feeling. Truly, ProgPower is a festival like none other in the US - full of friendly faces, excitement, and a sense of brotherhood. Further, the first band of the day (Need), personified this enthusiasm and attitude perfectly as they took the stage at 2PM. They would have the crowd in their pocket within three songs. More...

Thought Chamber Pulls Out Of ProgPower USA

Glenn Harveston, promoter for ProgPower USA, has announced that San Francisco's Thought Chamber has been forced to pull out of this year's festival to be held from September 10-13th, 2014 in Atlanta Georgia.

The following announcement was made by vocalist Ted Leonard: "Ted Leonard here….We regret to announce that, due to my scheduling conflicts, Thought Chamber will not be able to participate in ProgPower USA 2014. I feel terrible about this, but have had unforeseen commitments arise that unfortunately cannot be changed. We are truly honored to have been invited to perform at ProgPower USA. Glenn Harveston has built one of the best progressive metal festivals in the world, and we hope that Glenn will forgive our unforeseen cancellation and allow us to return in the future. This was totally unexpected, and evidence that I've completely overloaded my plate. I would like to personally and publicly apologize to Glenn Harveston, my band mates, and to any ProgPower USA fans that may have purchased tickets solely to see Thought Chamber."

Harveston has named the replacement act as Greek progressive metal band Need. The band released the latest album "Orvam - A Song for Home" in January. As a preview, check out the track "Mother Madness" from the album here: More...

Seventh Wonder Checks In From The Studio

Seventh Wonder drummer Stefan Norgren has checked in with the following update about recording new material:

"Stefan checking in from the studio, as promised. So, I spent the day in recording mode yesterday. Huge fun! My kit is set up and fine tuned just the way I want it and my drum sound is killer right off the bat!

"We went about this a little differently than what I'm used to, as Johan played along live as opposed to the conventional way of having a pre-recorded 'rough' guitar track. This gives the session a live feel which I really appreciate. I completed one song already and got started on another, which I'll finish tomorrow. More...

Seventh Wonder Posts Year-End Recap

Bassist Andreas Blomqvist of Seventh Wonder has checked in with the following year-end recap:

"It is always around this time of year that I try to just briefly summarize this past year and also try to lift the gaze beyond New Year's and look at what's at the horizon for Seventh Wonder.

"It has in some ways been a slower year than normally, or at least I fully respect that is the way it probably feels to all of you out there, our most loyal and beloved fans. We have really down prioritized throwing out videos or news updates, and also live performances have been scarce. Obviously Tommy’s time being spent to a great extent with Kamelot doesn’t accelerate things, but there are also some other reasons that will hopefully make things seem a little brighter….

"We usually write about 8-10 tracks for a new album and we have today no less than 9 songs demoed in our studio, albeit not completed definitely the lion’s share has been written. So rest assured we have really not just stopped writing, but we do progress in a little bit different way than before with Tommy being in and out. Also, somewhere maybe about half way through the year we had an epiphany and decided to do something special…. Unfortunately I *Still* can’t tell you exactly what we are up to but I really honestly feel it is something new and cool and something you will appreciate. More...

Seventh Wonder Issues Update On New Material

Bassist Andreas Blomqvist of Swedish progressive metal act Seventh Wonder posted an update on the band's Facebook page on the progress of the material for the follow up release to 2010's "The Great Escape."

The update reads: "Great fun last night! We sat down and listened through the six or so demos we have recorded to just get a feel for how everything sounded and everybody were pleasantly surprised at how good it sounded. Feels like this one will fly. We also started on a new track and made great progress. Whereas let's say 4-5 of the previous tracks were pretty much familiar territory, this new one is again something a little bit more different and it is fun and challenging to break out of your comfort zone and write new bass lines etc and I am sure the others feel the same way. Two more songs are being worked on outside the studio and bottom line is I think we are progressing according to plans!"

Seventh Wonder features Kamelot vocalist Tommy Karevik and Lion's Share drummer Stefan Norgren.

Seventh Wonder To Release New Album

Andreas Blomqvist of Seventh Wonder has checked in with the following year-end recap and announcement about releasing a new album this year:

"This time of year I normally write a little something so I figured I would do that again this year.
2012 sure was a different year for us, somewhat in hiatus but also having a lot to deal with.

"Stefan has worked his way into the band incredibly well, Tommy went on a world tour with Kamelot, Johan had a baby and I think I have made a decent enough comeback after my tenure in the States and we managed to sneak in a gig in Norway and a little tour in Italy too - not to mention us having written some prog-goodies. Good to be back!

"So the most important topic now is of course 'what now?' You bet it is! Well, first let me say this: - 2013 will be an exciting year, for it *will* be a year of a new studio release from Seventh Wonder. We are well under way! We have more or less seven songs written, out of which four are very well arranged and demoed and only one that is still not properly worked through. We also have two more things in the pipeline to dive into come January and February. More...
