Skinlab Enter Pre-production

Bassist/vocalist Steev Esquivel of the veteran San Francisco Bay Area metallers SKINLAB has issued the following update:

"We've been in pre-production recording mode for the last few weeks. This will be the first time SKINLAB has ever spent so much quality time on pre-production. In the past our producers would show up a couple days early pror to recording and run through some ideas with us on arrangements, vocals and tones. This time around, we've taking a more hands-on approach with Snake [guitar] behind the board engineering and recording everything so it can all be heard played back and arranged, rearranged and ultimately thought out so we get the best out of each song." Skinlab Complete New Album

SKINLAB vocalist/bassist Steev Esquivel has issued the following update:

"Skinned Alive! is complete and sounds bad ass. We've had this on the back burner until we could get to the mixes and finalize everything. I have to say, I'm glad we waited so long. Juan was able to put the energy and time into the mix to make everything sound great, we're very pleased with the outcome.

We recently signed a deal with BCD Music Group for the release of Skinned Alive! We're very pleased to be working with BCD, as they've shown nothing but excitement and enthusiasm about working with us. I have no doubt that they're gonna kick ass and market this album the way it should be. We'll keep you looped as we get closer to rockin' some Skinned Alive!

Speaking of Skinned Alive!, we've been added to the FORBIDDEN show on February 24th at The Fat Cat Modesto. We fuckin' stoked to play this show, couln't ask for a better show to start the New Year off with... see ya in the pit!

As far as the new album... we've been working really hard writing the new record. Everyone has really stepped up to the plate once again, the songs are coming together and starting to take on a life of their own. So far we've written 9 - 10 complete songs with a few others still taking shape. Probably the heaviest shit we've ever written, but at the same time very dynamic and emotional with tons of hooks and beatdown parts. We've taken a new approach this time around, we want this to be the heaviest, fastest, ugliest music we've ever written. At the same time it's our fourth full length record, it should show maturity and I think we accomplished that. With any luck we'll have this record out mid 2008."

After much thought and discussions with the label, we decided to pull the plug on the EP and focus on writting for the remainder of 2007. With this being said, we are releasing 'Face of Aggression' as a holiday gift to you.

"We realize that we've been out of the the scene for a bit and want to show the world that SKINLAB is far from over. The shit we're writing right now is slammin' — just straight-up brutal heaviness with bits of all albums guaranteed to make you labrats happy."

"'Face of Aggression' is the first song written for the album. It's probably the most straight-forward song written so far. It definitely represents a new and hungrier SKINLAB... Hope ya'll dig it!"

Skinlab Singer Comments On New Defiance Album

Singer Steev Esquivel (SKINLAB) from legendary Oakland thrashers DEFIANCE has issued the following update:

"Well, I finally got my ass in the studio and completed one song for the upcoming release. Once again back at Trident studios working with producer Juan Urteaga, this shit sounds fuckin sick!!! No shit, I mean, after almost 15 years of not being a band the guys wrote an amazing record. And a true Defiance record at that.

The guitars and bass are fuckin brutal, the absolute best tones the band has ever had. The drums are amazing — Mark Hernandez really stepped things up, tons of slammin' double bass; the kid was on fire and it shows. Vocally, it's got to be one of the most challenging recordings I have ever done. It's been awhile since I had to sing to music tuned as high as Defiance (E 440). Definitely a challenge as I'm pushing myself to return to more of a singing style verses my Skinlab voice, which is much lower and more aggressive than what is called for in Defiance.

I'm really stoked to be apart of the album and doing my best to make the old-school Defiance fans happy as well as making our brother Dougie (Harrington - late guitarist) proud."

Fire Occurs During Skinlab Recording

SKINLAB bassist/vocalist Steev Esquivel checks in with the following studio update:

"Just got back from Day 2 of recording.

Things got off to a crazy start today... just as we were about to start tracking Snake's guitar cab caught on fire, almost burning down the house!!

Fuckin' crazy, we we're just kickin back about to start tracking, when Snake leaped up screaming 'fire, fire'!! Luckily we had some freshly bought Startbucks on hand to throw on the cab, just enough to grab it and carry it out before catching everything else on fire.

Crazy start, we all got a pretty good laugh at after the smoke cleared!!

After changing cabs and setting mic positions, thugs got back on track. Snake was able to complete his tracks for 'Face Of Aggression', getting super heavy tones that sounds amazing!! We decided to take a break continuing tomarrow to finish up guitar tracks and start getting bass tones.

Things are coming along great, this is sure to be the best sounding Skinlab recording yet. We're fuckin' stoked to get these new songs out, it's been a long time coming.

More updates soon."

Skinlab's new album is out later this year via Crash Music.

As previously reported, Century Media will be re-releasing the group's first album Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded, on October 2nd. The repackaged disc will feature never before seen video footage and pictures with liner notes from founding members Steev Esquivel and Mike Roberts along with new artwork and layout.
