Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2012, Day 3

Day three was upon us, and the only thing that banished the gloomy weather was knowing that the day held a few favorites in store. For me at least due to a stubborn illness I caught only the biggest acts. With a healthy mix of folk metal, deathcore, and even some classically inspired loveliness Day three promised to be another rousing adventure in Helsinki for everyone who came out to enjoy.

Suicide Silence was the first act of the day. The energetic Americans started the day off with some epic stage presence and brutal death core that prepared our ears for what was to come this day. Usually I’m not into this genre, but these guys have the kind of energy that is contagious. Singer Mitch is unusually acrobatic for a front man and has the audience frantically headbanging and moshing as he seemingly defies gravity while singing.

Next up was everyone’s favorits cellists, Apocalyptica. There’s something about this band that just pleases everyone, form pretentious purists to the most brutal metal fans; these guys have a very wide fan base. Always impressive is the fact that these well trained musicians can get a clean sound from their strings, even despite the humid weather and rain which usually wreak havoc on acoustic instruments. It’s hard not to enjoy the enthusiastic act on stage when the music can go from lovely, to rageful from one beat to the next. Though I wouldn’t have dreamt it doable these guys run around, headbang and essentially violate their cellos with bows that drop horse hair all over the stage; all while emitting music that permeates the festival grounds with its torment. Finntroll To Record New Album

Finntroll has announced the band will enter Sonic Pump studio to record a 6th full-length album and follow-up to 2010's "Nifelvind" (reviewed here). Studio time is set to start during the second half of November, and the as-yet-untitled album will be released worldwide through Century Media.

Finntroll guitarist Routa states, ”So far we have pretty much half of the material ready for the upcoming album, so there's still a lot of work to do before we enter studio. We are very excited about new material and we believe fans will be too when they get their hands on this new stuff.

"And on this point we're still talking only about the demo versions of the songs. Can't wait to get to studio and hear how the songs takes their first breaths and actually come alive.”

The Iniquity Descent and Graveborne

Following a rather hectic couple of days on the Spinefeast boat, I was lucky to be able to be alive enough to attend a rather unique show the following Friday. But, drawing inspiration from that determined spirit of Finnish Sisu, I stifled the headache with advil and corona and went on my merry way! At Dom Helsinki that night, there was a showing of the new Godseed DVD, recorded at Wacken (which is fantastic and every black metal listener should all go buy if possible) along with two black metal bands paying in support of the release, The Iniquity Descent and Graveborne. More Bands Added To Bloodstock Lineup

The organizers of the Bloodstock festival have issued the following announcement adding Finntroll, Wintersun, and Forbidden to the lineup:

"One of the leading names in the folk/pagan metal scene, Finntroll returns to Bloodstock after a rapturous reception back in 2007. Originally conceived as the result of a night of alcoholic carnage, when in a moment of inspiration, original guitarist Teemu 'Somnium' Raimoranta (RIP) and former vocalist Jan 'Katia' Jamsen conceived of a band that fused the darkness and grandeur of black metal with the traditional Finnish hoedown-music. The resultant sound was Finntroll.

"Joining them will be Fellow Finnish folk-freaks Wintersun, who’s set at Bloodstock this year will be highly anticipated after they were forced to pull out the 2009 event to complete their still to be released 'Time' album, expected later this year. Featuring members from some of the top names in the Finnish metal scene including Ensiferum, Rotten Sound and Norther, Wintersun are something of a super-group, with the various members influences combining to create a unique blend of melodic death and power metal with a heavy folk flavour that is bound to go down a storm with the Bloodstock crowd.

"Also added to the line-up are reformed US Thrash legends Forbidden. The recently reformed thrashers released their first album in over 13 years last October, after too-long a hiatus. 'Omega Wave,' released via Nuclear Blast records, received rave reviews in the British metal media and was rapturously received by fans, who lapped up the 12 tracks of no nonsense, back-to basics thrash on offer. Find out why Forbidden is one of the most highly regarded acts of the 80s/90s US thrash scene at this, their first ever UK festival appearance."

Additional details on the Bloodstock festival, which takes place from August 12th - 14th, are available here.

Barren Earth Posts Final Road Report

Keyboardist Kasper Martenson of Finnish act Barren Earth has checked in with the following final road report from the band's recent North American shows with Rotten Sound and Finntroll:

"Last week somebody knocked on the door of the bus. It was a drunken man who was looking for his friend. We heard that this missing friend was dressed merely in a Finnish flag, and didn’t speak any English. We were asked if this friend was in the bus. He wasn’t. We were asked if we’d seen him. We hadn’t. We were then asked to tell this lost friend, should we see him, to go to the venue. Since the lost friend didn’t speak any English, I don’t know how we were expected to accomplish this. Anyway, this man came over again and again, drunkenly slurring exactly the same things. The point of irritation was reached, after which we chose to ignore him and locked the door.

"A bit later there was somebody at the door again. Peering out the window into the dark night, I saw a figure of a shirtless man, who had a cloth of sorts around his head. ‘Oh, no! It’s the missing friend of the annoying person. This is trouble!’ I refused to open the door, and went back to the lounge. As the knocking continued louder than before, I returned to the door window to have a second look. And then it dawned upon me. It was not the missing friend, but Mathias from Finntroll returning from their gig, with a towel wrapped around his head, shivering in the cold, wondering why I had refused to open the door for him. I had a bit of explaining to do…

"After Philadelphia, the 3 remaining shows were Springfield in Virginia, and Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina. It seems to be very hard for us to make decisions. In Springfield our playing time was scheduled for 19:45-20:15. At 19:38 we were told that we could start right away, if we wanted to play for 7 extra minutes. We decided to start right away, but by the time we had eventually agreed upon which would be the extra song, it was already 19:44…

"In Charlotte, the posters for the gig announced not 4 but 5 bands, the fifth being Moonsorrow. Weird, that, since obviously Moonsorrow would not be appearing. Even weirder, considering that Barren Earth’s only official member of Moonsorrow, Marko, had left for Europe the previous day, handing the drumsticks over to Finntroll’s Beast Dominator. Though very different in style compared with Marko, he played very well, and the gig went smoothly. We even did a record for the amount of CDs sold per gig. Well done, Beasty D! More...
