Background
Lemmy spent the sixties in a number of small-time bands including Opal Butterfly, Sam Gopal, and The Rockin' Vickers as well as working as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix in 1967 for about six months, and as a roadie for The Nice. In 1971 he joined archetypal space rock UK Underground outfit Hawkwind who were centred around the very in Ladbroke Grove. His distinctive style of bass playing, involving the use of chords rather than the single notes preferred by most players, was a fundamental part of the Hawkwind sound during his tenure. He also provided lead vocals on a number of songs including the band's biggest UK chart single, Silver Machine, which reached No.3 in 1972.
By 1975 Lemmy's forceful personality and propensity for ingesting copious quantities of amphetamines were leading to conflict with other members, and this culminated with his sacking after being arrested for drug possession while on tour with the band in Canada. Lemmy went on to form a new band with guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox. Wallis's former bands included the Pink Fairies, Steve Took's Shagrat and UFO. Lemmy's connection with Took (formerly of T Rex) was not limited to Wallis, as they were personal friends and Took was the step-father to Lemmy's son Paul. This new band was originally called Bastard. However, after the band's manager pointed out this name would lose them TV and radio exposure, it was changed to Motörhead - the last song Lemmy wrote for Hawkwind.
After a short period both Wallis and Fox were replaced with guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, and with this line-up the band began to achieve success. The uncompromisingly intense nature of their sound appealed to both Lemmy's original metal/rock constituency as well as the new punk fans — intrigued, perhaps, by Lemmy's brief stint in The Damned — and Lemmy's guttural vocals were unique in the world of rock at that time. The band's success peaked between 1980 and 1981 with a number of UK chart hits, including the classic single Ace of Spades (still a crowd favourite today) and the No. 1 Live Album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith . Motörhead have since gone on to become one of the most influential bands on the heavy metal scene and, although Lemmy is the only constant in a changing line-up, are still performing and releasing records to this day. Despite Motorhead's many member changes over their 30 year history the current lineup of Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee has remained constant since 1995.
Lemmy has also worked with a number of other musicians over his career, and occasionally guests with Hawkwind. He was brought in as a songwriter for Ozzy Osbourne's 1991 No More Tears album, providing lyrics for the tracks "Hellraiser," (which Motorhead later released) "Desire," "I Don't Want To Change The World," and the massive hit "Mama I'm Coming Home." Lemmy has noted in several magazine and television interviews that he made more money from the royalties of that one song than he had in his entire time with Motorhead.
He has made a number of appearances in film and television, including the 1990 science fiction film Hardware and the 1987 comedy Eat the Rich, for which Motörhead also recorded the soundtracks. In the 1994 comedy Airheads (in which he is credited as "Lemmy von Motorhead"), he shouts (truthfully) about being the editor of his high school newspaper. He has also appeared in several movies from the Troma studio. Having a predilection for self-deprecating parody, he once appeared in an advertisement for Kit Kat chocolate bars, miming a piece of chamber music on the violin, in an upper-class tea-room. Motörhead performed the entrance theme song "The Game" for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)'s Triple H, as well as "Line in the Sand" for his now defunct wrestling stable, Evolution. In 2006, they once again provided theme music for the WWE as they recorded the song King of Kings for Triple H on the Wreckless Intent CD.
Lemmy collects Nazi memorabilia, and has an Iron Cross encrusted on his bass, which has led to accusations of right-wing extremist tendencies; however, Lemmy considers himself to be an anarchist. According to Keith Emerson as written in his autobiography, two of Lemmy's Hitlerjugend knives were gifted to Keith Emerson himself during Lemmy's time spent as a roadie for The Nice. Emerson used these knives many times as "keyholders" during his famous wrestling sessions with the Hammond Organ during the shows with The Nice and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
He published his autobiography, White Line Fever in November 2002.

Motörhead’s "Motörizer" Makes Big Debut on Charts
For a band with a history that spans three decades, it is a challenge in itself for Motörhead to live up to even their own previous achievements. However, 2008 proves to be a huge year for the Grammy award winners. With the August 26 release of Motörizer, Motörhead has broken their own sales records and Billboard top 200 chart debut history, Their first week of sales has placed Motörhead in the top 100 overall charts (#82 to be exact), and top 5 on the Indie Charts.
The pre-release attention that Motörizer received was intense and justified. As the album artwork adorned the enormous backdrop on their high-profile Metal Masters Tour, Motörhead reintroduced their fans to some classic tunes, while also debuting songs off of Motörizer. Though this "tour of the year" has just concluded, Motörhead has now set out across the US once again, as headliners of the Volcom Tour with the Misfits.
In addition to these two monstrous tours, Motörhead has been seen on magazine covers around the world, heard on nearly every radio airwave, and will have their song "Rock Out" used as the theme song for the WWE pay per view show "Unforgiven." In addition to countless other radio, print, and television opportunities, it has also just been announced that AT&T will be airing the Motörhead commercial for another 4 months due to its popularity. Motörhead has once again delivered a well-received record that continues to validate their status as "legendary."
Black Sabbath Bassist Slams Sarah Palin
The latest addition to the list of legendary rockers enraged with Republican politicians is none other than Geezer Butler, the legendary bassist of Black Sabbath/Heaven And Hell. In a recent tour update he says:
"Hello readers,
"Thank you all who came to see the Metal Masters tour. It was a pleasure touring with such great bands and friends - Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Testament, and their respective crews. It was great meeting everyone who came to the meet and greets after the shows.
"Now back to reality. As you may know from my web-site and lyrics, I am pro all life, not just unborn fetuses. I don't understand people who say they are pro-life, but then support unnecessary wars and the disgusting slaughter of animals for sport. I respect people's freedom of religion, but i absolutely abhor hypocrites. Which brings me to this horrific video of cowardly bastards in airplanes, shooting wolves for so called "sport", and the hypocritical politician [she's supposed to be pro-life, remember], who allows this cowardly act to take place in her state. I know lots of people who hunt, and I enjoy shooting at my local gun range, but I don't know, nor would i want to know, anyone who gets pleasure from this disgraceful behaviour. God/Nature has created a beautiful earth, and populated it with beautiful creatures, and i believe that all life is miraculous. Why do politicians [royals included] enjoy killing so much, and treating those miracles with such contempt?
"Love and peace,
Geezer."
Airbourne Pulls Out Of Motorhead Tour
Aussie rockers Airbourne has posted the following message online:
"After 200+ shows this year, Joel's suffering from strained vocal chords and is being forced under doctor's orders to cancel the current USA dates with MOTÖRHEAD. All that is needed is a couple of weeks rest and then the band will be back on the road in Japan this October, and then taking on a UK / Europe tour for the third time in ten months. The band is gutted that they can not play these shows with Motorhead & hope to see you all at a show soon."
Rock on & see you soon.

Metal Masters Enlighten Chicago
In what will likely go down as arguably the best metal tour of the summer, The Metal Masters Tour has been treating fans with four legendary metal bands which include two of the first metal bands ever in Judas Priest and Heaven and Hell, a thrash pioneer in Testament, and Motorhead. This concert lineup is the equivalent to a festival main stage without having to sit through any dismal filler acts or bands that leave fans questioning their metal legitimacy for deserving to be on such a tour.
Being an Iowa resident, I rarely see any classic or larger metal bands roll through, so to see four bands that will likely not stop here again this year, on one bill, was incentive enough for me to make the trip to Chicago. The concert was held on August 19, 2008 at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheater (formerly the Tweeter Center). It was also a chance for me to see two of my personal favorite bands in Judas Priest and Testament that I longed to see at least once before they retire, can’t perform live anymore or I die. More...

The tour, produced by Live Nation, will be Priest's first thorough sets of U.S. dates in nearly three years, and will be in support of the group's aforementioned "Nostradamus" release. Some of the events that Nostradamus experts have interpreted as some of his predictions include the great fire of London in 1666, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and most recently, 9/11, among countless other renowned events.
"For me, 'Nostradamus' has been a musical journey without comparison," adds guitarist KK Downing. "The intrigue and mystery that surrounds this revered man has expanded my perception of heavy metal to the highest plateau and enabled me to reach the outer limits of my imagination and transport unique feelings and emotions to the instrument that allows me to express myself."
As to why they chose to make a concept album about Nostradamus, Glenn Tipton explains: "We didn't - he chose us. We feel it was meant to be!"

Rock Giants Pay Tribute To Lemmy In Documentary
Billboard.com reports: The life and career of Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister is being celebrated in a new documentary, tentatively titled "Lemmy" and slated for release in 2009.
The film promises fans more access than ever before to Kilmister's life, and includes interviews with past and present bandmates and such peers/admirers as Slash, Dave Grohl, the Clash's Mick Jones, Alice Cooper, Steve Vai and wrestling superstar Triple H.
Directors/producers Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski (both of whom have contributed to Billboard) are shooting the film on a combination of HD video and super 16 mm film. Other giants from the world of metal and hard rock will appear in the film as well, with details to be announced. "We haven't heard the word 'no' yet after any interview request," Olliver says.
"Shooting Lemmy is like filming dangerous wildlife. He never does what you expect him to do, and he never does anything you want him to do," Olliver says with a laugh. "A lot of the coolest shots are shots we had to wait for four or five shows to go by before we could get them."

The Metal Masters Tour Dates and Bands Announced
After weeks of speculation, Live Nation has finally confirmed a killer package that is bound to go down as the heavy metal event of 2008 — JUDAS PRIEST, HEAVEN AND HELL, MOTÖRHEAD and TESTAMENT will be touring together for the first time.
Dubbed "The Metal Masters Tour", the fifteen-date U.S. trek kicks off August 6 at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, New Jersey. Tickets go on sale to the public beginning this weekend at www.livenation.com.
JUDAS PRIEST will be supporting their epic concept album, "Nostradamus", arriving June 17 via Epic Records, which tells the tale of the renowned 16th century prophet. A few tracks from "Nostradamus" will make their in-concert debut on "The Metal Masters Tour", but the majority of PRIEST's set list will include some of metal's all-time classics, as well as fan favorites that span the quintet's entire career. Without a doubt, this will be one of PRIEST's most powerful sets ever.
HEAVEN AND HELL will be supporting the release of "The Rules Of Hell", a five-CD boxed set available July 22 from Rhino Records, which features re-mastered versions of all four Dio-era BLACK SABBATH albums ("Heaven and Hell", "Mob Rules", "Live Evil" and "Dehumanizer") in a deluxe package with new liner notes.
Perennial road rats MOTÖRHEAD will be offering a blistering barnstormer of a set spanning more than three decades of molar-rattling biker metal. A new studio album — the 20th of their storied career — is currently being recorded at their old pal Dave Grohl's studio with an August release date targeted. Frontman Lemmy, named by the U.K.'s Guardian newspaper as "the nation's greatest living Englishman," blairs out, "Here it comes everybody, the test of your Metalness in 2008 and the years to come! Come one come all and be abused!"
Rounding out the line-up will be legendary thrash metal titans TESTAMENT, whose new album, "The Formation of Damnation", (April 29) displays TESTAMENT as the quintessential modern heavy metal band, whose experience and accumulated skill allows them to attack with reserves of anger, energy and finesse that make them more powerful than ever. Lead singer Chuck Billy says, "Uniting these bands is the heavy metal event of generations. We are so proud to be a part of it."
Although all four bands may represent different subgenres of heavy metal, all four have one thing in common – they have stuck to their stylistic guns through thick and thin, and have remained true to the metal form. And soon, band and fan will be united as one on "The Metal Masters Tour".
"As ever, we look forward to screaming out loud with our metal maniac fans when we hit the road," enthuses PRIEST singer Rob Halford. "Thank you once again for your devotion and support. The PRIEST is back!"
This tour will be limited to fifteen very special engagements, and Citi cardmembers will have pre-sale access to tickets through Citi's Private Pass Program, available to all Citi cardmembers at www.privatepass.citi.com.
Metal maniacs seeking the ultimate concert experience can access unique VIP ticket and fan experience packages that offer premium seats, meet & greets, pre-concert parties and more brought to you by the bands' official websites. VIP packages for the first events will be on sale by 10 a.m eastern time on Friday, April 25. Also, not all VIP packages are the same, so be sure to pick the right one that suits you best.

Motorhead's Frontman Refuses To Turn It Down
MOTÖRHEAD mainman Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister has told Times Online that he would resist any attempt to force him to turn down the music as part of Scotland's new control of noise at work regulations, introduced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following a Brussels (European Union) directive.
"The essence of rock 'n' roll is loud music," he said. "How the hell can we be expected to enjoy ourselves if we’ve got to turn it down?"
The rules cap weekly average noise exposure at 85 decibels, meaning periods of loud play need to be cancelled out by quiet periods. The idea is not to protect audiences at concerts but performers and other staff.
The new directive also affects rock and classical musicians. Classical orchestras are considering whether they may have to hold quiet rehearsals for music by composers such as Wagner or Verdi to offset the loudness of their concerts.
The loudest rock bands have included THE WHO, who in 1976 reached 126 decibels. They were beaten last year, however, by the Watford punk band GALLOWS, who hit 132.5 decibels.
