Dendura Vocalist Aziza Taking Break From Band
Vocalist Aziza of Egyptian themed metallers Dendura has issued the following announcement about taking a break from the band:
"Dear friends and fans,
"Some of you have already emailed me about my recent interview in Associated Content about Dendura and I feel I need to explain more to you, my fans and friends. Dendura has been at a stand still with our album on Killzone Records produced by Neil Kernon. Due to the economy, Killzone, like many other record labels, simply doesn't have the funds to complete our album; therefore, we are not able finish the album within a reasonable time. We all have the determination to complete this album, but realistically it may be up to a few years. In the mean time, we are working more on a self produced album.
"Since realizing the Neil Kernon album will take longer than any of us anticipated, I have decided that I need to focus on other singing opportunities and projects. With that said, I am taking a break from Dendura for a while. I am not quitting the band, but I have to keep on a path that is healthy and positive for me. For the benefit of all involved, I need to take a step away and rejuvenate and evolve into other musical projects. More...
Dendura Parts Ways With Bassist
Dendura bassist Jason Stevens released the following open letter about his decision to leave the band:
"To all my friends and fans of Dendura,
Dendura is on an exciting and difficult journey; a journey where soul searching is required and utmost dedication is expected. For those of you that do not know yet, My wife was recently diagnosed with cancer and it would be impossible for me to give Dendura the dedication that they need from a bass player right now and it would be even more unfair to my wife and family to be touring and be gone while she fights cancer alone. My journey with Dendura has ended on good and friendly terms. I wish my friends Aziza, Steve, Paul and Justin the very best. As well as my friend Mike please take good care of them on the road. I am where I am needed the most. And I thank all of the fans of Dendura for their support and understanding, I will miss you all."
Dendura also issued the following statement about Jason leaving:
"This is sad news for all of us and we wish the best for Jason and his family. As some of you know, we are currently finishing up recording our album w/ Grammy producer Neil Kernon. Upon our cd's release, we will be going out on the road to tour in support of this album. All bassist inquiries, email Mike Markle: isobassist@yahoo.com"
Dendura Joins Flight Of The Valkyries Festival
Dendura (USA), the Egyptian-inspired, female-fronted progressive band with belly dancers, will join co-headliners Unexpect (Canada) and Shadowside (Brazil) for the second-annual Flight of the Valkyries festival at Station 4 in St. Paul, MN, on Saturday June 28. Flight of the Valkyries is the only festival in the USA to feature a complete lineup of female-fronted metal bands.
“I am really pumped about the festival,” says Dendura drummer Justin Lee Dixon. “Exposing your sound and style to a whole new group of people is always exciting and, being that all the bands are female fronted, we are all happy to be a part of an event that is bringing together this ever-growing genre of music. But what I anticipate the most is sharing the stage with many talented musicians.”
Belly dancer Abida Blaze, who is known for her exotic, mysterious moves, will join Dendura onstage at the festival.
This year, the festival headliners bring a big dose of metal from Canada and Brazil. Unexpect recently toured with Epica, Echoes of Eternity and Trail of Tears. Shadowside is a rising star in the Brazilian metal scene.
Minnesota-based artists Something to Fear and Aria Sharp have also been announced and additional bands will be confirmed in the coming months.
Flight of the Valkyries is the only music festival of its kind in the USA that is devoted to metal bands with female lead vocalists. The festival showcases all metal sub-genres. The festival debuted in 2007 and showcased a variety of female-fronted metal bands including Doro, Vainglory, Earthen, The Ottoman Empire, Visideon, Spiritual Decay and Sirens of Titan.
Meanwhile, 2008 is already turning into a big year for Dendura. The band recently signed with KillZone Records, scored distribution with Nightmare Records and they’re discussing their next album with a Grammy-winning producer. In addition, they played high-profile concerts including a show with Edguy (Who did some 2007 dates in Germany with Aerosmith) and they have a track on the US ProgPower 2007 compilation given to everyone who attended the sold-out, national festival in Atlanta starring After Forever and Sonata Arctica.
Dendura Signs With Killzone Records
KillZone Records, a notable indie label that specializes in metal music, has signed Dendura, the female-fronted, Egyptian-inspired, progressive metal band with belly dancers, to a one-album deal on their label. Nightmare Records will also distribute "New Life," Dendura’s self-released, debut album.
“Dendura is a perfect fit for KillZone because they stand out from the norm in terms of talent, ability and marketability,” said Stuart Banks, president of KillZone Records. “They present an unforgettable approach to progressive metal that builds and weaves dark themes with the allure of sensual mystery. Their music calls from a past that touches both the primal and inquisitive nature of our souls. They combine powerful, heavy music that drives like the shifting sands, carrying vocals like rising smoke and invoking the ghosts of a land and time long passed, but never forgotten.”
KillZone Records is a strong indie label for metal and extreme music bands. The company plans to release the next Dendura album later this year and the band is currently discussing the project with a Grammy-winning producer.
Although Dendura is currently hibernating while they write the new album and a film score, 2007 was a big year for the band. They played high-profile concerts including a show with Edguy who did some 2007 dates in Germany with Aerosmith.
In addition, "Symphony," a track from "New Life," appeared on the US ProgPower 2007 compilation given to the 50,000 people who attended the sold-out, national festival in Atlanta. In their hometown of Grand Rapids, MI, they joined bands including Fuel, Silverchair and Finger Eleven on the WGRD Bootleg charity compilation to benefit a local non-profit group. Dendura contributed a special, acoustic version of their popular song "I Have a Gun".
Dendura’s metal version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is also the theme song for the Comedy Central cartoon "Monsters Ballz." The band also licensed music for an upcoming sci-fi series and a TV pilot.
You can get more information on Dendura and listen to some of their music on the band's MySpace page.
