Taake Took Over A Trendy Neighborhood In Prague
Reviewing concerts in different cities is exciting and nerve wracking at the same time, especially if you don’t speak the native tongue. Tonight, I was in Prague, Czech Republic to see Taake along with opening acts Asagraum and Heimland. I’ve been told that Black Metal is a really popular draw here in Prague, and I was going to see if that was indeed true tonight. Tonight’s show was taking place the Futurum venue, located in a trendy nightlife area of Smíchov. This seemed like a perfect fit for an underground Black Metal show.
When I arrived, Heimland had already started playing. As I made my way past the ticket booth and down two flights of stairs into the stage area, I saw how Black Metal ranks in Prague. Unequivocally and without a doubt, it’s a popular draw. The place was already packed for the first band. I bumped my way through the attentive crowd to an open area off the side of the stage. I was able to catch about 5 songs of Heimland’s set. Without having ever listening to them previously, I would say they’re solid as musicians and as a live act. On a side note, some of their material did remind me of early Taake.

Heimland
Next up was Asagraum, whose popularity is starting to climb among the Black Metal faithful. If you don’t know anything about them, they are a mostly all female Black Metal band based in Netherlands but with some roots from Norway. They’ve been around since 2017 but after catching their whole set, they sounded like they’ve been around much longer. I thought they were good. They played with a lot of enthusiasm and were tight. They received a healthy response from a rabid crowd so that tells me that they’re well on their way to headlining their own tours soon.

Asagraum
I’ll be honest, Taake is one of my favorite Black Metal bands so if I read like a homer the rest of the report, you’ll know why. After entering the fog filled stage during their intro music, Taake started their set with “Hordalands doedskvad VI”, the instrumental track on “Hordalands doedskvad.” In fact, they plated the entire album tonight for its 20-year anniversary. I love it when a band decides to showcase important albums in their catalog. For Taake, this was hands down one of their most important albums during their historic rise within the Black Metal divinity.

Greekbastard's 2023 Anti-List For 2023
I get bored of making lists, reading lists, being listed, etc., but here I am at the end of 2023 compiling my thoughts on creating a list that only a handful of people will actually take the time to read. This is not a dig on those that create/read/ingest lists, rather me brainstorming on what to put down in words my most metal memories of 2023. Depending on who reads this, we might even share some of these memories, so without further ado, let’s do this.
I want to give my respects to some of the fallen this year. Some were founding members of their respective bands, but the music will live on in their memory. Rest In Power: Josua Henrik Lander Madsen (Artillery), Jim Durkin (Dark Angel), Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Anthony Meo (Biohazard), Ryan Siew (Polaris), Zach Scott (Beyond Extinction), Mark Adams (Saint Vitus), Kirk Arrington (Metal Church), Jon Kennedy (Hecate Enthroned).
In 2023, there were some headlines in the metal cosmos that stood out. For starters, Sepultura calling it a day. How about Mike Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater? Or, Ozzy canceling his appearance at Power Trip festival, or even better, AC/DC’s triumphant return at that very same festival? More...

Brutal Assault Festival Band Upddate Announced

Wicked aural filth comes from the islands with GODFLESH, who are highly regarded as one of the pioneers of industrial metal; they took industrial to the next level with their fuse of heavy guitars and mixing it with slow drum loops and effects and their unique approach has spawned several musical styles since their conception.

Taake North American Tour Now Officially Cancelled

After several shows were scrapped amid pressure from Antifa groups, concerned citizens (and also rapper Talib Kweli,) Taake‘s North American tour has now been officially cancelled. Opposition against the shows came resulting from Taake‘s Hoest performing with a swastika on his chest many years ago. Hoest himself has since denied allegations of Nazism, saying that the performance was intended as shock value. Other groups also took issue with his anti-Islamic song lyrics.
Hoest himself issued the below statement on the cancellation: More...
Taake’s Entire U.S Tour Cancelled?

Soon after learning that the San Diego, CA and Portland, OR dates of Taake’s planned North American tour have been cancelled Metal Insider took a closer look into every remaining show of the tour, and what was found out is this: all but two of the venue websites have either updated the show status to “cancelled” or removed the date completely. In other words: The results look as if the tour is a no-go.

Taake Show Cancelled Due To Nazism Allegations

Taake‘s forthcoming spring North American tour has been met with at least one cancellation in the wake of allegations of Nazism being leveled at the group. The March 24th opening date at Le Poisson Rouge in New York, NY has been cancelled due to pressure from activist groups, such as this Antifa group.
The allegations originate from the Taake‘s mainman Hoest performing with a swastika painted on his chest back in 2007. He has since apologized for the incident and claimed it was meant to incite a reaction and was done as a joke. That said, lyrical content interpreted as being anti-Islamic by many hasn’t sat well with others either. Regardless, other venues seem to also be under pressure and are considering cancelling the band’s planned shows.
