Atheist Frontman Wants To Hear From The Fans
Atheist frontman Kelly Schaffer has posted the following message online:
"Since our return to the scene in 2006 so many from all over the world have written such great notes of inspiration to us through replies to blogs, or through emails, but I would like to create more of a community of people sharing the thoughts that you send to us, and post them on our Comments page as opposed to replies to blogs, in the months leading up to the release of the most important record we will ever make in my humble opinion. Those comments will help drive this ship to new lands (if I could borrow from ROBERT PLANT) Myself and the others in the band will participate as well in discussions about the record on the comments page about your experience with our music, some of the things you write are amazing and I wish more people could hear them, and what level of participation our music has had in the soundtrack to your particular lives, and paths. In the early days of Atheist we would correspond with one another through photocopied fanzines and letters back and forth, and that was the best! Now, it only makes sense, with the development of the internet to parlay that into this medium, and it's waaaaay easier, old school fuckers will tell you that. And if you could do us the favour of not posting these huge banner ads on the comments page so we can keep load times down for those without high speed hook ups. We look forward to your opinions and thoughts on the band, we will be reading!!!!! Those with the coolest and most interesting thoughts, and opinions, will find themselves handpicked by us to be backstage chilling with us at upcoming shows in every city we perform in during our tour 2009! Thanks for all of your motivating words, and we hope to satisfy the metal masses with some sick ass technical brutality!"

But after years of relentless emails from Ryan we've finally given in. Jeff Wagner Discusses Influence and Impact of Prog
Jeff Wagner, author of the upcoming definitive book on progressive metal (scheduled for release in Autumn 2009), former Metal Maniacs editor and current The End Records staffer, has been interviewed by the Noise Pollution blog of James Mayse.
THE END RECORDS staff member Jeff Wagner. Scheduled for release in Autumn 2009, the book will detail the common movements of pioneers like OPETH, WATCHTOWER, VOIVOD, ATHEIST, DREAM THEATER, PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, CELTIC FROST, SIGH, and FATES WARNING — metal bands who have gone against the tide of tradition and conservatism. Linked by a desire to push heavy metal forward, these varied bands with a couple hundred other black sheep form the hard-to-pin-down category of "progressive metal."
Here's an excerpt:
We haven’t talked at all about death metal. I find much early death metal rather one-note (or one-grunt), but the genre is showing almost as much variation now as is black metal. What was the first band to take death metal’s “traditional” sound and expand it?
Wagner: That’s the chapter I’m elbow-deep in writing right now. It’s a tough call. Celtic Frost were considered a death metal band as much as a thrash or black metal band back in the day, and when they released ‘Into the Pandemonium’ in 1987, it was a total radicalization of all that. But I think what you’re talking about is the purer late ‘80s/early ‘90s death metal sound. Around 1990/1991, several bands began expanding the sound and taking it into a more experimental and/or technical area. I think of Disharmonic Orchestra (‘Not To Be Undimensional Conscious’) and Atrocity (‘Hallucinations’ and ‘Todessehnsucht’) in Europe, and here in the states the first that come to mind are Death’s ‘Human’ album and Atheist’s ‘Unquestionable Presence.’

Jeff Wagner Writing Book On Progressive Metal
Bazillion Points Publishing has announced the first definitive book on the elusive world of progressive metal, written by esteemed metal crusader and prog manic and THE END RECORDS staff member Jeff Wagner.
Beginning with the hugely influential mid-1970s efforts of Canadian band RUSH, Wagner's book explores the shared lineage of prog rock and metal. He unfurls the huge tapestry and examines the sounds and styles created during the genre's 40-year history, including: the "Big Three" — QUEENSRŸCHE, FATES WARNING, and DREAM THEATER; extreme prog pioneers VOIVOD and CELTIC FROST; Norway's post-black metal avant garde (ULVER, ARCTURUS, VED BUENS ENDE, BEYOND DAWN, etc.); and of course the huge global movement of Big Three-worshippers in the 1990s and the leaders that emerged (AYREON, SYMPHONY X, etc.). The vastness of what can be considered "progressive metal" has proven to be one of the most viable, malleable forms in all of modern music. More...
Atheist Posts Material Update
ATHEIST vocalist Kelly Shaefer has issued the following update:
“You asked for it, the first new ATHEIST material in 15 years has risen to the surface and it was truly amazing, much better than we could have expected! We ended up with a bit over three minutes of truly ATHEIST, brutal, fast-as-hell, technical metal madness!!!!
"My trip to Atlanta [where ATHEIST drummer Steve Flynn currently resides] began in true ATHEIST ‘cursed’ style. I enter Avatar rehearsal studios and with guitar and backpack in hand, I proceed to bust my fucking ass… like really bust ass and fucked up my knee; shit, I have not fallen like that in years. So I hobbled to the practice room, and plugged in my guitar… knee bleeding and all, and, of course…my guitar does not work!!! Most of you know I am left-handed so… I could not play anyone else’s guitar SO….. Friday was a wash. I did, however, get to watch GNOSTIC rehearse and that was incredible; you all are in for a treat when that record comes out. Fortunately for me, the GNOSTIC boys enlisted one of their buddies, Rick, to perform some guitar surgery, and I am very grateful to him for that ’cause we would not have been able to write anything had he not fixed that fucker up for the next day so everyone say… RIGHT ON, RICKY BOY!!!

Atheist Members Working On New Material
Vocalist Kelly Shaefer of legendary technical death metal band Atheist has issued the following update about new Atheist material:
"[I'm] heading to Atlanta next Friday to jam with Atheist drummer and my best friend Mr. Steve Flynn, this will mark the first time we have written together since 1991's 'Unquestionable Presence'. So I am curious how it will sound. I know it will be sick, there is a formula that me and Flynn have that automatically sounds like Atheist...so it will be fun to hear what it will sound like. And who knows? If it it goes well...?? We will see what happens."
Neurotica To Play Sarasota This Weekend
NEUROTICA, the hard rock band fronted by ATHEIST vocalist Kelly Shaefer, will perform at the Cock And Bull (975 Cattleman Rd) in Sarasota, Florida this Saturday night, March 29. Tickets are $10 at the door. This will be an all-ages show.
NEUROTICA finished out in 2002 with a slew of roaring performances on Ozzfest, which led to Rolling Stone magazine calling the group one of the 10 best bands to see on the festival.
Artists Pay Tribute To Max Cavalera
Brazil's Roadie Crew and Argentina's Jedbangers magazines recently collaborated on a very special story on SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera. In addition to arranging a lengthy interview with Max conducted by Thiago Sarkis and Fernando Ibáñez, the two publications invited several world-renowned musicians who witnessed and/or toured with Cavalera in the early years of his career to talk about his importance to the heavy metal scene and to reveal interesting stories about him and SEPULTURA. This ultimate tribute to the most important and influential South American metal musician and band ever is the cover story in the brand new issue of Roadie Crew (which is out on the newsstands right now) and will be a highlight in Jedbangers' next issue, which will be released in two weeks (featuring MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine on the cover).
Here is what some of heavy metal's most renowned musicians have had to say about Max Cavalera and SEPULTURA:
Lemmy Kilmister (MOTÖRHEAD):
"Max Cavalera is a very important man. He with the rest of SEPULTURA were the first Brazilian band to play outside of Brazil, and gain a large, fanatical following. We met them in 1991 when we played together, and we soon realized they were arrogant sons of bitches same as we were! Since then we've played with Max, SEPULTURA, then SOULFLY, and with SEPULTURA featuring Derrick, the big lad. They always put on a great show, the fans go crazy, and they keep pushing the odds. Luck to them."
Vinnie Paul Abbott (HELLYEAH, ex-PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN):
"Max is metal! We had the pleasure of having both SEPUTURA and SOULFLY touring with PANTERA and every night they gave us a run for the money. Max writes intense lyrics and delivers them with conviction and passion. His riffs are crushing and he has always had a great metal guitar sound. In short, Max is a metal god and he lives and breathes it every day. He and his bands put Brazil on the heavy metal map and brought a new tribal feel to the scene. So, here's to Max: 'dente preto my brother!!!'"
Mille Petrozza (KREATOR):
"I've known Max since '85. He was my first penpal from Brazil. Back then his name was Max Possessed and his brother Igor drew a self-made SEPULTURA t-shirt for me. Max is still a good friend who hasn't changed a bit over the years. If we run into each other on festivals nowadays it's always cool and relaxed. Max is one of metal's most creative and down-to-earth characters. A living legend!"
Kelly Shaefer (ATHEIST, NEUROTICA, UNHEARD):
"Max Cavalera is a fucking living legend, easily one of the most influential characters to ever play metal. When we first met years ago during the recording of 'Beneath the Remains', I was fortunate enough to work with him on a tune called 'Stronger Than Hate'. I wrote some lyrics, and helped him with his pronunciations, etc., because at that point he was not speaking English nearly as well as he does today. When I first heard the finished product, I was blown away at the quality of the music of SEPULTURA: they had great riffs, massive drumming, and it was quite memorable. I think since then, he has influenced many, many bands, and many in today's metal scene owe him a great deal of gratitude. I have maximum respect for Max, and all his work including SOULFLY. I tip my metal hat to you Max, you're a bad-ass mutherfucker!!!"
L.G. Petrov (ENTOMBED):
"Max and SEPULTURA were the ones that opened the doors for many bands from South America, and they got the rest of the world's attention with their full on thrash metal! I love Max's aggressive and energetic vocals. Personally he is one of my favorite singers of all time."
David Vincent (MORBID ANGEL):
"I've always had good thoughts of Max. I'm not only a contemporary and a friend, but also a fan. From SEPULTURA's 'Morbid Vision' death metal days to the innovation of SOULFLY, Max forged a path that in my opinion has given tremendously to the world of music. His early successes helped introduce the world to many new Brazilian artists who may not have had the same opportunities previously. I've seen the 'drink 'till you drop' days of the early 1990s and now the balanced, spiritual plateau he has achieved today, and Max remains a true star. From myself and the rest of MORBID ANGEL: 'Obrigado meu Amigo'!"
Thrash Metal Book To Surface In September
Zonda Books has posted this press release:
Garry Sharpe-Young's latest book, "Thrash Metal", is being readied for publication this September. In addition, Zonda Books publishes Garry's "Death Metal", "Black Metal" and "Power Metal" all before the end of the year. These MusicMight titles replace the 2001 editions, which have consistently ranked number 1 on their Amazon.com searches for five years and more.
Thrash Metal. At first mocked by the Rock traditionalists Thrash would swamp the hard n' heavy world propelling one of its own - METALLICA, to the very pinnacle of Rock's elite.
In the early 80s Thrash breathed new life into the Rock scene providing older acts with a much needed kick. This new force opened the floodgates to armies of teens armed with flying Vs, bullet belts and a sense of purpose that would fuel genres such as Thrashcore, Crossover and technical Speed Metal. Without Thrash there would be no Death Metal, no Black Metal. That explosion of aggression has seen subsequent afterblasts, most recently Europe and South America has seen a genuine renaissance of Thrash Metal.
Without doubt, Thrash Metal still continues to make its mark in the biggest possible way. The "big four" - METALLICA, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX and SLAYER are all documented here in the greatest possible detail with full, up to the minute histories, exclusive photographs and global discographies, which include demos, albums, singles, chart positions, track listings and catalogue numbers. Over 400,000 words leave no stone left unturned in pursuit of knowledge of ex-members, rare recordings and career milestones. The author has interviewed all these major acts. Indeed, he interviewed METALLICA's late Cliff Burton just days before his passing. The early days of MEGADETH are straight from the mouth of Dave Mustaine.
Also covered are the legion of groundbreaking Bay Area acts such as METAL CHURCH, TESTAMENT, EXODUS, DEATH ANGEL and HIRAX. The European thrash explosion of KREATOR, RAGE, DESTRUCTION, SODOM, GRAVE DIGGER and HELLOWEEN is also covered in frightening detail. The Pagan Thrash of SABBAT, the avant garde eccentricity of CELTIC FROST and the Funk Thrash of MORDRED - it's all here. The second wave of thrash with major artists such as SEPULTURA, PANTERA and MACHINE HEAD takes the genre right up to the new breed of Thrashers, now a truly world-wide phenomenon. All examined in depth.
Having achieved its quarter of a century, Thrash Metal is not only alive, it is thriving. If you thought this rawest form of Heavy Metal was consigned to the past this book will deliver a rude awakening! Read the book, buy the records and bang that head!!
The scope of 'Thrash Metal' includes artists such as A.N.I.M.A.L., ABANDONED, ABATTOIR, ACCUSSER, ACID, ACID DRINKERS, ACID REIGN, ACROPHET, AFTERMATH, AGENT STEEL, AGONY, AGRESSOR, AIRDASH, AMEBIX, ANESTHESY, ANGEL WITCH, ANGKOR WAT, ANNIHILATOR, ANTHRAX, ANVIL, ANVIL CHORUS, APOKALYPTIC RAIDS, ARBITRATER, ARCH ENEMY, ARMORED SAINT, ARMOURED ANGEL, ARTILLERY, ASSASSIN, AT WAR, ATHEIST, ATOMIZER, ATOMKRAFT, ATROPHY, AZOTIC REIGN...
And that's just some of the "A"'s!

Atheist To Reform For Festivals
Seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST have regrouped for a run of exclusive live performances.
Guitarist/vocalist Kelly Shaefer has reassembled what is widely considered the bands classic recording lineup (Shaefer, guitarist Rand Burkey, bassist Tony Choy, and drummer Steven Flynn) for two exclusive festival performances; Italy's Evolution Festival and Germany's Wacken Open Air. Shaefer comments, "We're very excited to be able to get back on the stage and play these insane tunes again the proper way with Flynn, Burkey and Choy. It's going to be very exciting and something not to be missed!."
ATHEIST will take part on Evolution Festival (scheduled for July 16 and 17 in Brescia, Italy) and Wacken Open Air (scheduled for August 3-5 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany). These will be the first in a series of exclusive festival performances announced. Shaefer continues, "We would like to make a great festival run this year and expose as many as possible to the music we lived and died for. Many thanks to the Evolution Festival and Wacken for helping to give many people who never got to see ATHEIST live a chance to see us one last time. This is our chance to make the music we worked so hard to create come alive one last time, and we guarantee that it will not disappoint."
ATHEIST has recently had it's wildly-influential catalog (1988's 'Piece of Time', 1993's 'Elements', and the 1991's legendary 'Unquestionable Presence') reissued internationally via Relapse Records. Additionally, "Unquestionable Presence" was recently featured in Decibel magazine as part of its ongoing Hall of Fame feature. The Hall of Fame feature highlights influential and pivotal releases in metal history, and "Unquestionable Presence" will join of ranks of previously profiled classics such as SLAYER's "Reign In Blood", SEPULTURA's "Roots", and AT THE GATES' "Slaughter of the Soul", among others.
Ex-Atheist Drummer Schedules Live Debut w/ Gnostic
GNOSTIC, the Atlanta, Georgia-based band featuring former ATHEIST drummer Steve Flynn, will be making their live debut on Friday, January 6 at The Darkside (attached to the Sidelines sports bar) in Marietta, GA.
In other news, Flynn will be appearing live on WREKage 91.1 FM in Atlanta at midnight this Friday night, December 30. Steve will be discussing the possibility of reunion shows with ATHEIST, the future of GNOSTIC and about his triumphant return to metal. The show, which airs Friday nights between midnight and 6:00 a.m., can be heard online at wrekage.org.
As previously reported, GNOSTIC recently re-released their demo from earlier this summer with all-new vocals as well as a brand new mix. Four of the songs - "Corrosive", "Violently Calm", "Mindlock" and "Wall of Lies" - can be downloaded at myspace.com/gnosticmusic.
GNOSTIC will be seeking a deal in 2006 with the help of Flynn's former bandmate Kelly Shaefer and his Starrfactory Records indie label (which also licensed the ATHEIST back catalog to Relapse Records). GNOSTIC hope to release their debut album in 2006. You can also visit the band at their official web site, gnosticmusic.com.
