Background

Seattle, Washington is a city well-known for being the rain-ridden suicide capital of the U.S., but to many others, Seattle is known as the epicenter in a dark abyss of emotion that fuels the creative disposition of Nevermore. Joining a variety of musical sub-genres that were never meant to be mutually exclusive, the band successfully emblazoned themselves with a grey aura of enigma that has become their legacy.

Intelligent men who held no preconceived notions of what they should sound like, NEVERMORE launched themselves in 1994 and have never forsaken the histories of their varied backgrounds. Providing a backbone of resilience are ex-members of Sanctuary: the charismatic vocalist Warrel Dane and steadfast bassist Jim Sheppard, who survived their major label experience by the strength of their integrity when the world all-too-willingly embraced the grunge movement. Lending a modern influence to the band’s blueprint was guitarist Jeff Loomis, whose classically trained background added an unmistakable depth to song composition and whose death metal heritage supplied ample vehemence. Drummer Van Williams solidified the nucleus of the band with his undulating, propulsive rhythms. Drawing inspiration from the darker things in life, it became obvious the strain of their collective creation defied categorization.

Nevermore’s impressive self-titled debut - which began their five-year collaboration with internationally renowned producer Neil Kernon of Judas Priest, Queensÿche, and Dokken fame - surfaced in 1995 and landed them a U.S. tour with Death and a European tour with Blind Guardian. The band soon welcomed ex-Monstrosity guitarist Pat O’Brien into the fold and 1996’s In Memory EP soon proved to critics that volatile melody and aggression could be successfully intermixed. But it was The Politics Of Ecstasy (also released in 1996) when Nevermore came into their own by showcasing the higher degrees of their technical musicianship. When Pat O’Brien left to join Cannibal Corpse, the band quickly recruited ex-Forbidden guitarist and long-time friend Tim Calvert who contributed to the songwriting in 1999’s conceptual masterpiece Dreaming Neon Black, a morosely dark and articulately beautiful exploration of the peaks and valleys of human emotion. Puncturing the underground with its sanctity was the bleak storyline that followed a man’s descent into madness and ultimate suicide after the mysterious death of the only woman he loved. Metal Maniacs hailed it as “a concept album that rivals Queensrÿche in its ambitiousness and perhaps even the mighty Iron Maiden in execution.” A rigorous touring schedule through the U.S. with Mercyful Fate and headlining shows in Europe & Australia led Tim Calvert to re-evaluate his commitment to the band, and ultimately he opted to leave.

Forced to return to their original four-member configuration, the band’s resilience and bold resolve to top themselves kicked in as they headed to the desert with new producer Andy Sneap (Machine Head, Testament, Kreator) and to the haunted Village Studios in Texas. The result of their fevered creativity was the extraordinary, ‘must-have’ record of 2000: Dead Heart In A Dead World. Audiences around the world were phenomenally receptive to this infinitely complex musical maze crowned by the massive sounds of Jeff Loomis’ seven-string guitar, Jim Sheppard’s five-string bass, the maelstrom drum work of Van Williams, and the arresting poetic power of Warrel Dane. Metal Maniacs praised it as “a collection of songs that summons forth a boldness that sounds ‘epic’ while never giving in to pomposity. NEVERMORE’s biggest achievement yet.” Outburn Magazine simply called it “perfect.” Throughout the worldwide press that year, the astute, darkened luminosity of Dead Heart dominated “Best Album” lists, and fans in every country celebrated the amazingly emotional balladry and the unforgiving sonic bludgeoning Nevermore masterfully refined. Live, they became known as “The Chaos Bringers” and held audiences of thousands at the Wacken Open Air, Dynamo, and With Full Force festivals in the palms of their hands. The band was constantly on the road, sharing stages with Arch Enemy, In Flames & Shadows Fall, Opeth & Angel Dust, and had their 2001 tour with Savatage cut drastically short by the events of September 11th.

For two years, Nevermore’s superbly crafted and complicated versatility has been brooding. Thanks to the assistance of Queensrÿche/Dokken producer Kelly Gray, we are once again invited into the band’s dark subconscious with 2003’s Enemies Of Reality. Warrel Dane’s visceral, clarion calls leads the band to more limitless heights armed with the indestructible backbone of drummer Van Williams and bassist Jim Sheppard while venom, foreboding, and poignant despair continue to be born from the hands of Jeff Loomis within the confines of one song. The title track pummels you with its ferocity and cerebral aggression; “Never Purify” is a forlorn lament of the dismal reality we’ve surrounded ourselves in; and the emotionally evocative “Who Decides” exudes the insightfully mature observations through hindsight of a life lived in extremes.

Metalunderground.com's Best of 2005 Awards

Having just wrapped up another year, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on what made this year a great year in metal.

Like last year, I've polled the entire staff here at metalunderground.com about their favorite albums of 2005. This year we've also added a few more categories as well. At the end of announcing the winners of all of the categories, the entire ordered list of nominees will be presented, because there was simply so much good metal to check out.

So without further ado, I'll present Metalunderground.com's staff picks for the following categories: Best Metal Album of 2005, Best Metal Newcomer of 2005, Best Live Act of 2005, and Most Anticipated Release for 2006.

Best Metal Album of 2005

There were some great metal albums released in 2005, although dare I say not many landmark albums. Still, a few great releases rise to the top of 2005 and the nod for Best Metal of 2005 goes to:

Nevermore's "This Godless Endeavor"

Runners-up:
Chimaira's "Chimaira"
Behemoth's "Demigod"
Dark Tranquillity's "Character"
Strapping Young Lad's "Alien"
Rammstein's "Rosenrot"

Best Metal Newcomer of 2005

Bands eligible for "Best Metal Newcomer of 2005" included bands who have released their first full length album or released their first album on a somewhat major metal label, or even have no formal release at all. This is a tough category to get consensus on, since we all have different tastes in metal and will hear of only a relatively few new bands each year. The band who rose to the top should be no surprise, however, as they've made waves and generated loads of press for being such a young band. Metalunderground.com's Best Metal Newcomer of 2005 is:

Trivium

Despite there being many great new bands coming out in 2005, only one other band got multiple nominations from the staff at metalunderground.com in this category.

Runner-up:
3 Inches of Blood

Best Live Act of 2005

Best Live Act was by far the most competitive category we voted on, since it was not restricted to releases from this year. The winner may not be expected by many metal heads, but at the same time may come as no surprise to those who have seen them live. Metalunderground.com's Best Live Act of 2005 is:

Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica embarked on their first full-fledged headlining US tour in 2005, and won the top votes from two of our staff (including myself) - enough to ensure victory. While the band plays cellos, their performance is as heavy and intense as any true metal band's you'll ever see.

As I mentioned, the competition was tight in this category, and we had seven more bands get multiple nominations and were right on the heels of Apocalyptica when the votes were counted.

Runners-up:
Megadeth
Anthrax
Mudvayne
Children of Bodom
Therion
Amon Amarth
Killswitch Engage

Most Anticipated Release for 2006

Most Anticipated release for 2006 as a category also generated a wide range of nominations due to the complete difference in people's tastes in metal. However, the few bands that got multiple nominations were really no surprise. The Most Anticipated Release for 2006 is:

Slayer

Slayer is well overdue for an album. Between their parent label being bought up and touring heavily, Slayer has delayed putting out an album since 2001's "God Hates Us All." Still, several other bands are garnering a lot of anticipation for new releases, including these:

Runners-up:
In Flames - Come Clarity
Metallica
Vader

Looking back, 2005 was a great year in metal despite there being few or no landmark releases. Nu-metal was all but nonexistent with the exception of its few top remaining bands such as Disturbed, Korn (who have moved away from metal once again) and System of a Down. Metalcore seemed less of a huge trend than the previous year, as the good bands have risen above the label and hardcore/metalcore elements have found their way into other styles of metal.

Last year was a huge year for many newer and up and coming bands putting out albums. But it was an even bigger year for many seasoned bands and old school metal bands - some recently reunited - on the tour circuit. 2006 looks to be even bigger with a slew of big releases by big name bands slated for release and more headlining tours by many of last year's up and comers as well as those bands reunited in 2005.

Finally, here is the entire list of nominations for the 2005 categories voted on, because all of these bands are worth looking into: More...

Nevermore To Headline Christmas BallS

Nevermore has been confirmed to headline Century Family's Second Annual Christmas BallS, along with Behemoth, Watch Them Die and Manntis. The show is set to take place on Wednesday, December 7 at the Key Club in Hollywood, CA.

Nevermore, who spent the summer performing on the mainstage of Megadeth’s Gigantour, just finished headlining their first European tour supporting This Godless Endeavor. The band joined Opeth’s North American tour Oct. 26 in Chicago, and wrap up the tour in Ft. Lauderdale, FL November 11. The band will then continue performing headlining dates across the Midwest, complete dates can be found here.

Currently conquering North America on Danzig’s Blackest of the Black tour, Polish metal titans Behemoth are on their third North American tour supporting their critically-acclaimed album, Demigod. Behemoth have toured with the likes of such heavyweights as King Diamond, Suffocation, Nile, Halford, Opeth, and Superjoint Ritual.

Oakland-based purveyors of violence Watch Them Die are currently on a massive national U.S. tour alongside Exodus, 3 Inches of Blood and Crisis. The group recently unleashed their blistering sophomore offering, Bastard Son, which is a multi-layered exploration of anger, pain, loss and redemption.

The explosive Southern California quintet Manntis have an extremely busy fall schedule ahead of them after recently being added to the 10 Years of Brutality Tour alongside Hatebreed, Most Precious Blood, Full Blown Chaos, Gizmachi and If Hope Dies, kicking off on Nov. 1st and running through Nov. 23rd. The group’s highly acclaimed new album, Sleep In Your Grave, produced by Cameron Webb (Danzig, Motorhead, Social Distortion), is now available and goes straight for the jugular with its scorching guitar work and pummeling rhythmic assault.

Following last year’s successful event, the elves have put their heads together to come up with even more fantastically diabolic devilry. Already busy assembling stockings filled with heavy metal trimmings, they are scouring the workshop for musical goodies for all attendees. Santa’s selected outstanding surprises to raffle throughout the night, and one lucky winner will go home with a brand new Schecter guitar.

Tickets for the Christmas BallS are available at The Key Club box office, or at Ticketmaster.

The Century Family includes Century Media Records, Nuclear Blast America, and Liquor and Poker Music. Century Media, the flagship label of the Century Family, is an upstart independent hard rock/heavy metal label founded in 1988. Its American branch opened three years later. With nine offices around the globe, the label employs more than 150 people worldwide. Featuring a rich catalog of such influential acts as Iced Earth and Opeth, the label’s leading artists today include Shadows Fall, Lacuna Coil, God Forbid and Arch Enemy.

Gigantour Report from Huntington, WV

After parking at the pay lot across the street we approach the Big Sandy Super Arena located on 3rd avenue of Huntington, West Virginia. The venue is lovingly referred to as the “civic center” by the locals. On the bricked walk way in front of the doors is a van, not any van but a van fully painted in the cover art of the new Bobaflex album, Apologize for Nothing. Impressive, flashy and showboating, but impressive none the less. This is home state for the band, so why not show off a little. We snap a couple of pictures of the van and we’re off to the window to grab our tickets. I give the lady my name and who I’m on the list for, Bobaflex. She finds the envelope; she slides the package through the slot in the glass. I open the package, as promised my photo pass. Off to a good start to a good night. More...

Into Eternity Wrap Up Fourth 2005 N. American Tour

Canada's progressive death metal band INTO ETERNITY have wrapped up their fourth 2005 North American tour supporting their latest album Buried Into Oblivion . This year the band has been privileged to share the stage with metal veterans Amorphis, Hate Eternal, Krisiun, Incantation, Hammerfall, Edguy and now Stratovarius. Drummer Adam Sagan commented, "The tour is winding down, and we have had a freakin' blast. We've seen old friends, and have made plenty of new ones. It's also been killer seeing a lot of you returning to see us. The Stratovarius guys are great, but since the bands had really different touring schedules (we drove our van and they had a bus) we didn't have a lot of opportunities to get to know them... until we closed down Seattle's Studio Seven drinking together.

"Just when we thought we would be going home and ending the year on a high note with Stratovarius, we were given the honor of playing two weeks with Opeth and Nevermore: truly a dream come true. Personally I could tour with either band and die happy, but touring with both together come on..."

INTO ETERNITY will begin working on Buried In Oblivion's follow up album after finishing the Opeth / Nevermore tour.

Here are the remaining Into Eternity tour dates: More...

Gigantour Report From Vancouver, BC

I went to the Gigantour show at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, BC on September 9. Because I have been busy for the past little while, I haven’t got the chance to get this done until now. As far as I know, the Montreal date has been filmed for the upcoming Gigantour DVD to feature Dream Theater and the Vancouver show was filmed for Anthrax.

Although originally scheduled to play, the Dillinger Escape Plan had to back out due to an injury suffered by guitarist Ben Weinman, which is a bit of a downer. On the bright side, DEP will be back in Vancouver in November. More...

Into Eternity Prepares for Opeth Tour

Frontman Tim Roth of Canada's Into Eternity has posted the following message on the band's official website:

"Hello Everyone!

It has been an amazing month for Into Eternity. We have just landed the opening slot on the Eastern USA , Opeth/Nevermore Tour! This whole year for us just keeps getting better and better. The whole band is very thankful for this huge opportunity. The last time we got to tour with Nevermore was way back in 2001. The band was still young, but Nevermore treated us like brothers. That is something I will never forget. The last time we saw them was in Italy at The Gods of Metal.

All the guys are fans of Opeth as well and we can't wait to get on the road with these talented bands. There will be a high level of musicianship, so hopefully we can learn off of these amazing players! This will be a great package to witness, so I know all of our diehard fans will be there to support us as usual. Take care and we will see you on the road soon!

keep it metal!"
