Silent Line Covers One Direction
Bonnyville, AB melodic metal band Silent Line has posted a metal cover version of One Direction's hit single "Drag Me Down" because sometimes metalheads need to demonstrate their guilty pleasure for pop music. Guitarist Mike Burton comments:
"We were just looking to make a funny cover that isn't serious by any stretch of the imagination. We thought it would be hilarious to try and turn such a straightforward boy band song into our style of melodic metal.
"Some people in the band - not naming any names - are on the fence about releasing it, but I think it will get some laughs and hopefully a few new fans! Don't take it too seriously, and if you want to see what our original material sounds like check out our SoundCloud page or come see us live on March 11th for the Wacken Metal Battles in Edmonton at The Mercury Room!" Pit Stories: Shoelace Windshield Wipers
Sometimes just getting to the show can be a battle all it's own, especially with metal bands covering long distances by van and bus with few funds (or mechanical know-how) available. For this week's Pit Story, Canadian group Silent Line shares a tale of having to rig up some very ghetto windshield wipers just to reach the venue:
A while back the majority of us lived in Bonnyville and we used to travel to and from Edmonton for the majority of our gigs. Not too long before this specific gig we bought a beautiful yellow 16 passenger van for the band. Bonnyville to Edmonton is roughly a 2-and-a-half-hour drive and about half way through the trip we came up to a pretty nasty storm. Unfortunately, earlier on in the trip we noticed the windshield wipers weren’t working and we needed to pull over and take a look at them.
We pulled over into a nearby gas station ahead of the storm, opened up the hood, and could not for the life of us get the wipers working. After pondering a few moments Mike came up with the suggestion to tie shoe laces to the windshield wipers and manually pull them from the inside of the vehicle.
The shoelace for the left wiper was attached and ran underneath the left side mirror on the van, so when we pulled on that one the wipers would come down. For the right wiper we left a small gap in the top of the window so when we pulled that shoelace the wipers would go up. Dave was in the band at the time and he kindly volunteered to do the first shift on working the wipers. Luckily as kneeled in between the seats and alternately pulled the laces we fed him ice cold beer until his arms gave out. Roughly an hour later we made it somewhat-safely to our show and with a hilarious memory that we would not forget.
That's some dedication to bring an awesome metal show to the fans! Silent Line's new album "Shattered Shores" will drop this Friday - October 30 - and you can also stream the entire release ahead of time through the player below. Silent Line Posts Full New Album Online
Bonnyville, AB death-infused melodic metallers Silent Line are now streaming the entire "Shattered Shores" album online as it sees official release today. The band also comments:
"'Shattered Shores' is a concept album – our first attempt at one – that depicts a tortured island stuck in time being slowly worn away by an endless ocean. Themes of frost, snow, fire, night, and stars are used to illustrate feelings of hopelessness, fear, and loss.
"A single person is referred to throughout the album and everything is told from their point of view as they wander, stuck on the island unsure of how they got there, and unsure if they will ever leave. Lots of references to snow and frost are used as we live in Canada, and there is a lonely but beautiful character to the long winter we experience. Another recurring theme is the storm, which brings change and renewal; it is – for lack of a better term – the symbol of hope and of a brighter future.
"Overall, 'Shattered Shores' has a melancholic feel to it. It is definitely darker than our other albums, but we feel that it is much more mature and identifiable with an audience. It’s not meant to be depressing, but it deals with real issues and lots of the time those are not pretty. While it is a darker album, the message is not. Overcoming internal issues and feelings is the prime focus, and to describe how important that is, it is necessary to spend time describing the more pessimistic side of things and what makes it so crippling.
"The songs are more involving and deeper in meaning and structure than our last release, and we took a step back technically on purpose. Individually, the instruments are not as “crazy” as before, but we had a vision for the songs this time, we could see the end product and knew that to get there we didn’t have to play the most technically demanding things as fast as we could. The songs, while more simple, have far more feeling and emotion than before and we are very proud of what we have produced. We hope that everyone listening to the album can find something they enjoy, something they identify with, and something that makes them want to continue listening." More...
Silent Line Streams "Erosion"
Bonnyville, AB death-infused melodic metal band Silent Line is streaming new single "Erosion," taken off upcoming concept album "Shattered Shores." Vocalist / guitarist Michael Burton comments about the track:
"This is the second song on the album and it is more 'bouncy' and is a lot different from the opening track before it both lyrically and musically. The bounciness comes from locking the rhythm guitars to the kick drum in verses and blending lead guitar and synth runs together.
"In this song, the setting is one of the land free of snow, being burned away by an inferno; fear dominates. The past and how the land has come to be a ruined hellscape is the main subject matter." More...
Silent Line Streaming "Black And White"
Bonnyville, AB death-infused melodic metal outfit Silent Line is now streaming new single "Black And White" upcoming concept album "Shattered Shores," which is the follow-up to the 2012 LP "Born of Dying Star."
Vocalist/guitarist Michael Burton comments about the track: "'Black And White' as part of the concept album is the track that represents the transition into winter after the inferno in the last song. Primarily dealing with the passage of time and fading memories, the lyrics describe a person longing to remember better times. Longing as well for a simpler time when things were seen as black or white: simple and clear choices that do not truly exist. Complex shades of grey have become reality.
"A lead guitar laden intro moves into a percussive verse featuring mainly drums and bass underneath the vocals. There isn’t a very complex structure to the song, but as with lots of the album it is the feeling that matters, not the amount of notes or changes in time signature."
The "Shattered Shores" track listing is as follows:
1. Frost of The Night (5:46)
2. Erosion (3:52)
3. Black And White (3:21)
4. Shattered Shores I Timeless Night (5:45)
5. Summer Song (5:40)
6. Starfall (4:08)
7. Shattered Shores II A New Beginning (8:08)
8. Into The Chasm (4:39)

Silent Line Posts "Shattered Shores" Track
Bonnyville, AB death-infused melodic metal band Silent Line is now streaming first single "Shattered Shores I: Timeless Night," taken off the upcoming concept album "Shattered Shores."
Listen in below, courtesy of a stream hosted by MetalNationRadio.ca. Vocalist/guitarist Michael Burton comments:
"Timeless Night is the first part of the title track off this album and describes the coming of the storm that is supposed to wash away the ash of the past and renew the land. It shares a similar chorus with Shattered Shores II: A New Beginning, as well as the verse riff - although the songs are in different tuning.
"It also shares some lyrics with Erosion to tie the depiction of ashes and flames to the storm. It primarily describes hopelessness and sorrow, trying to move on, but being stuck in depression. Musically it is quite diverse ranging from classic In Flames-style dual lead guitars to a four guitar harmonized clean bridge and huge ringing chords."
