The Best Heavy Metal Cover Art From 2016
Every year in December we cover the best and worst of metal with a focus on recorded material and live releases, but what frequently gets lost in the shuffle is an integral part of all things metal: the artwork.
While the prominence of physical media that you actually handle and admire while listening to an album has faded with the advent of digital distribution, cover artwork remains a core and iconic part of the heavy music experience across all sub-genres.
From frozen occult black metal to the most over-the-top fantasy power metal, the artwork is the first thing people are going to notice, and the artists deserve more recognition than they typically get.
Our roundup of the most memorable art last year saw jaw-dropping pieces from the likes of Marco Hassman, Par Oloffson, and the increasingly prolific Seth Siro Anton. This year will feature a markedly contrasted lineup of artists and bands as we explore drastically different styles that all express thematic ideas in amazingly divergent ways.
Some art this year was memorable for more negative reasons. Freedom Call, Devildriver, Gojira, and Metallica in particular all had less-than-stellar or head-scratching cover artwork this time around. We'll (mostly) be skipping that sort of memorability below, and instead focusing on things that looked amazing or were too bizarre to ignore.
Alkerdeel – Lede
We have to start here with Alkerdeel's “Lede” cover crafted by Luchtrat, an artist I'd never heard of before who does a variety of graphic designing online. I seriously haven't been able to stop thinking about this cover all year long from the moment I first laid bewildered eyes upon it.
Is it a joke? Is it completely serious? Is it taking square aim at the sort of people who would wonder about the difference? It's both minimalist and somehow simultaneously complex. It's a childish idea presented very simply – a demon taking aim and farting – but also seems to be so much more. Is it a comment on the pointlessness and absurdity of life? Is it meant to be lighthearted or threatening? Are we supposed to be taking something away from the stripped down color scheme and the blank spaces between the lines?
I have no idea if this was even the intention, but this artist caused something of an existential crisis for me. I have to wonder if somewhere there's a farting demon currently laughing about that fact.

Holycide Crowd Funding New Album
Holycide is finishing the mixing and mastering process on new full-length album "Annihilate... Then Ask!" that is going to be a must-hear for lovers of good old 80's styled thrash.
"Annihilate... Then Ask!" contains 9 new songs plus a Detente cover, all recorded at Blood Cadillac Studios by Andy C. who's also doing the mix & mastering. Cover artwork was crafted by artist Andrei Bouzikov. Holycide has launched a crowd funding campaign for the album here, with the band also commenting:
"Even if the album will be released on Xtreem Music on 1st of February 2017, we are conscious that this is the underground and with such low and decreasing sales on physical formats, labels can't afford to pay studio & artwork costs that later will be difficult to recover, so we're financing everything by ourselves.
"For a relatively new band like us, of course it's quite some money, but we believe we're bringinig hell of a fucking awesome album and hopefully with your help by pre-ordering any of our items & combos, we'll get back, if not all, at least a good part of what we're investing in 'Annihilate... Then Ask!'" More...

Holycide comments: "We were in doubt between an abstract, transcendental, modern and post-whatever artwork to demonstrate we're so fucking mature, but in the end our natural born stupidity and lack of originality prevailed and since we're a thrash band without modern bullshit, we decided to go for a cover that's total fucking 80's Thrasher as hell!! Regarding the music, we can assure it's way superior than our previous EP, a fucking killer album!" More...

Holycide To Release EP Through Xtreem Music
Spanish thrash metal sensation Holycide, led by Dave Rotten from Avulsed, is currently in the studio finishing the mixing of an upcoming debut EP at Overhead Studios with Raúl Fournier "Furni" (ex-Avulsed drummer) as producer. Xtreem Music also comments:
"Holycide's inception happened back in 2004 and went through various line-up tryouts and a couple of songs were recorded, but nothing serious until in spring 2012 Miguel Bárez (guitar) and in summer 2013 Dani Fernández (bass), joined the band and thus recorded a 2-song demo by the end of 2013. After this, in spring 2014, two more members completed the band: Salva Esteban (guitar) & Jorge Utrera (drums). With this line-up, the band started to record 5 songs and a cover version of Dark Angel in summer of the same year.
"The aim of Holycide is to create some intense and aggressive yet varied and catchy Thrash Metal, focusing in 80's style of bands like Dark Angel, Infernal Majesty, Atrophy, Crooner, Sacrifice, Sepultura...
"The EP will be entitled 'Toxic Mutation' and the cover artwork has been created by famous artist Mark Riddick. This recording will show a huge improvement from the debut demo and as soon as it's finished, we'll show you an exclusive advance track as well as the cover artwork, full track list and definitive release date that might be around January/February 2015. After this, Holycide will start offering their very first live shows around their local clubs in Madrid." More...
