Background
Swallow The Sun was brought to light back in 2000 when guitarist Juha Raivio asked his fellow band mate Pasi Pasanen to try out some songs that didn’t fit their current band’s ( Plutonium Orange) melodic rock style. They rehearsed a couple of songs together and decided to find more members and turn this venture into a band. The following year M. Jämsen joined as a second guitarist and M. Kotamäki from the black metal band Funeris Nocturnum as a vocalist. Soon after that another two members of Funeris Nocturnum came along- A. Munter on keyboards and M. Honkonen on bass.
In early 2003 Swallow The Sun recorded and self- released the demo “Out of This Gloomy Light”. As a result the band landed a record deal with Firebox Records and in July went back to the studio to record their debut album “The Morning Never Came”, which was released the same year and harvested a huge success within the underground community.
Their second album is due out in September 2005 through Firebox and Olympic Records.

Juha Raivio Comments On Live Absence
Fans catching Swallow The Sun live recently have noticed that long time guitarist Juha Raivio has been curiously absent, with Juho Räihä standing in his place. Today Raivio issued the following statement about the situation:
"As people are asking all the time from me if I have quit Swallow the Sun, or why am I not playing live with the band anymore, here is some answers for you. Answer is of course not. I formed the band 17 years ago and have written 8 STS albums and one EP altogether since then. I would love nothing more than play live for you as that is where my heart is, but life didn’t go that way.
"This music and the lyrics are just too personal to go in front of the people at the moment and rip your heart open again and again. I hope you understand. Maybe one day. But please go and support the boys on tour and show your love to Juho Räihä who has been doing great job filling in for me. Take care now."
Swallow The Sun is currently embarked on a North American tour alongside Amorphis. Full upcoming date and venue info is available below. More...
Swallow The Sun Kicking Off North American Tour
Finnish doom metal outfit Swallow The Sun has returned to North America to continue touring on the strength of latest release, "Songs From The North" (reviewed here).
The band begins a six week trek in the U.S. and Canada supporting Amorphis tonight in Charlotte, NC. Speaking about returning to North America, the members of Swallow The Sun comment:
"We are excited to hit the road again with our old friends Amorphis. It's been 10 years since we've toured with them last time. Cool to come back for another North American tour. Last year we did 5 weeks with Dark Tranquillity and now this massive 6 week run with Amorphis. It's gonna be a blast! Let's make Finnish Metal great again!" More...
Swallow The Sun Parts With Keyboardist
Finnish melodic death / doom group Swallow The Sun is now parting ways with keyboardist Aleksi Munter, who issued this statement:
"Tomorrow's show in Houston, TX will be my last show with Swallow the Sun and mark my departure from the band. I came to this decision during late summer 2016, when I had a burn out which I'm still struggling with. For the past 6 years I've been touring and working so much that it's a small miracle this didn't happen earlier. Not wanting to leave the guys hanging, and looking for some kind of closure for myself, I decided to force myself to do the shows for this year - even though I barely could find the energy for 1 show, let alone 40 - and then step down.
"In addition to burning out, I also sort of had enough, which I believe is as valid a reason as any. I've always had things I've had a passion for, but never could find the time or the energy to follow up on: photography, graphic design, my own music, among others. I will first take some time off, and then pursue these things I've pushed aside for all these years.
"Then there is my beautiful soon-to-be wife Olenka, whom I have barely seen for the last year or two. With Aleah's tragic and untimely passing I became painfully aware of the fact that nothing lasts forever, and I want to cherish the days we have while we're both healthy and well. I'm afraid I have already damaged my own health, and I don't want to end up there again. More...

Swallow The Sun Show In Dubai Cancelled
The Bilocate and Swallow The Sun show in Dubai has been cancelled, with Bilocate issuing this statement:
"Regretfully, we announce that our show with Swallow the Sun and Aramaic got canceled, due to a complaint issued, falsely claiming the show would include practices unacceptable by the hosting community from a cultural perspective (as per the organizing team).
"We know it's such a disappointment, for us as well, but we'll do our best to make it happen next time. Don't forget to join us all this Friday at The Music Room with the other bands. Please refer to the official organizer page for details."
Swallow The Sun adds: "Today we got some very very sad news. Sadly we can't perform our music to you guys. But some of us are still coming to Dubai to meet you. I guess it's better than nothing? We are so sorry."
Metal East Records also commented: "What we know so far that a competitor has actually filed this complaint mentioning the show was promoting devil-worshiping (which we all know is not the case). The show will continue and since none of the original line up can’t perform, let's fill the bill up with some local talents and celebrate never giving up on the music we love. " More...
