Pit Stories: Avoiding The Sea Of Flailing Fists

After a McDonald's cheeseburger break down from Zimmer's Hole and fights breaking out in the pit during every. single. song. of an Oceano set, today's Pit Story comes courtesy of Gyre guitarist Chirag Bhatt.

In the tale below, Bhatt reminisces about a simpler time when he wasn't cool enough to listen to At The Gates and ended up stranded atop a table in a sea of thrown fists during a Terror live set:

So, this brief but amusing tale takes place at the now closed Cricket Club in Irvington, New Jersey, sometime in the mid-2000's (honestly, every year from that decade has blurred together in my mind). It was probably my first time at a real hardcore show with bands like Terror and others playing. Though me and a few friends were really only there to see The Black Dahlia Murder because we were in our late teens and nowhere near cool enough to listen to At The Gates.

So, TBDM goes up and crushes their set and I spend the next 10 minutes downing glasses of water for my damaged throat as I had attempted to growl along the previous 30 minutes while forgetting that I don't know the first fucking thing about growling. In any case, it was a fun, crazy time in an old-fashioned metal mosh pit.

Soon enough, Terror goes up and suddenly the mosh pit turned into MJ's "Beat It" video sans the dancing. A flurry of flailing fists and face bandanas eventually lead to my friends and I standing on top of a couple of tables on the edges of the venue because we came to listen to metal, have a good time and not lose teeth. But before we got too down on ourselves for not being so down with the cool kidz, I looked over to the table to my right and saw none other than a few members of TBDM standing right on those tables with us wondering what in the actual fuck was happening - a sentiment we expressed to each other through bewildered looks and monosyllabic grunts of fear. All in all, the moment was a bizarre mix of fanboyism and concern for our physical well-being. But what more can you ask of a metal show?

The band’s new self-released EP "Moirai" is out now and available for stream/purchase at Bandcamp here (also available for listening below). If you missed it, check out Gyre's "I Release" drum playthrough video at this location. More...

Gyre Posts Drum Playthrough

N.Y./N.J. progressive metal outfit Gyre has teamed up with GearGods.net to launch a drum playthrough video of the song "I Release" from the band's new "Moirai" EP.

Stream the new video, courtesy of Gyre's Pablo Carpio, in the player below. "Moirai" can be streamed and purchased now at at Bandcamp here. The band also commented:

"This album is a resurgence - a reminder that it's never too late to truly awaken your potential in life and control your own fate. We can guide ourselves to this realization by expressing our passion and doing what we love. This can be different for people, but it is through the act of creation we feel our self-worth and purpose bloom.

"'Moirai' is a term for the three sisters of fate. It ties this third album together. Two sisters represent birth and death, inevitable forces beyond an individual's control. We are Lachesis, the second sister...the story in between. If we want to, if we decide...we can write our own story. Ultimately, we are all completely responsible for our own actions and emotions." Gyre Premieres New Song "All Revealing Eye"

New Jersey's Gyre is gearing up for the release of "Second Circle," and with the official drop date impending, the band has now teamed up with us to exclusively unleash another track from the EP.

Check out the pulverizing "All Revealing Eye" in the player below. You can also pick up a digital copy of "Second Circle" when it releases July 23rd via Monolithic Records. The EP's track listing is as follows:

1. All Revealing Eye
2. Ever Devourer
3. Circle to Feed
4. I Receiving All

Gyre comments on the track: "We want to put out 'All Revealing Eye' first because we feel it really showcases the full dynamics of the band. The song moves from groove metal to rock metal to tech metal and is built with bridges along the way. The structure and build-up of the song is something we focus on all the time in this band. The song lyrics deal with the idea that our senses are filters and not receptors. Image yourself hearing all the frequencies that are buzzing around you constantly, usually imperceptible to the human ear. Image all the spectrums of color indistinguishable from the next because your eyes couldn't filter and make sense of them. Your known world would crumble into senselessness. Our senses have one purpose: to give us a better chance to survive in this world. Not to tell the whole truth of what is actually around you, but to keep you alive."

Gyre Posts "Second Circle" Teaser

Garden State progressive metal act Gyre has posted a teaser video for its forthcoming EP "Second Circle." Check it out below. "Second Circle" will release digitally on July 23rd via Monolithic Records. If you like what you hear, be sure to check back next Monday as we'll be premiering a track from the release.

"Gyre is proud to announce the release of its second EP through Monolithic Records," said the band in a statement. "We understand that no band is an island. In this understanding Gyre is excited to team up with Tom Quigley, Jesse Zuretti and Monolithic to further our musical endeavor.

"Listeners can expect progressive metal that does not lose sight of the power of structure and song, and an understanding that it is the connection between our emotions that really get messages across to audiences. As Nietzsche said, 'In music the passions enjoy themselves.' Come enjoy our passion with us."

Added Monolithic founder Tom Quigley, "Gyre play a unique style of proggy groove metal with great aplomb, blending the technical aggression of a younger, scrappier Gojira with the mature melodic flourishes of Leprous or Extol. They are a natural fit for the small, tight-knit family we have at Monolithic Records."
