Diamond's Mine: The Best Of 2024

2024 is finally pinched off from our collective sphincters and as is becoming a far too familiar gripe by now, the state of the world is akin to a two day old Big Mac; neglected, unappealing and probably infested by vermin. However, we once again have been able to rely on the music we love to get us through this dumpster fire of an existence and were given some treats too, not just in the form of incredible albums but also the Acid Bath reunion we all thought would never happen, as well as the equally surprising comebacks of Nevermore and Nailbomb, not to mention The Sword and Slayer. Of course, we also said goodbye to such bands as UFO, Misery Signals and Twelve Foot Ninja and sadly dealt with the passings of former Iron Maiden frontman Paul Di'anno, ex Great White singer Jack Russell and Blake Harrison of Pig Destroyer and Hatebeak, to name only three dearly missed comrades. Time and metal marches ever on though and as always, we begin this recap by welcoming some new names into the fold.

Best Newcomer

Though it's becoming ever more difficult for new bands to make a name for themselves, there were quite a few who were able to put themselves on the map this year. One early example would be Hellman, from the Chilean capital city, Santiago, who unleashed their debut full length, "Born, Suffering, Death" at the beginning of the year, a very good example of death n' roll, recommended for those of who miss Entombed. There were quite a few bands who released their first albums this year but for me, there was one clear winner... More...

Desertfest London 2024: Day 3

Once again, we come to the finale. The last day of a festival is always bittersweet. A time of sadness because you know things go back to normal tomorrow, but also of joy because there's another day full of great music ahead. While attendees didn't have The Roundhouse to enjoy on the last day, the Electric Ballroom was open to us again and boasted a wealth of talent ready to perform. As always though, The Underworld was open for business and that's where we begin today's report.

Heading down the staircase and into the venue, the crowd were welcomed by Noisepicker. The duo, comprised of Orange Goblin bassist Harry Armstrong on guitar & vocals and drummer Kieran Murphy, emit the vibe of a local band one might see down the pub, but the kind that you have to tell your friends about right away. They mix a healthy variety of music, including doom and punk to create something fun and lively, enticing the crowd with a good time. While the music itself is solid and very enjoyable, the tongue does seem to be placed firmly in cheek with Armstrong's delivery and banter with the audience. Honestly speaking, there may not be a huge legacy ahead for Noisepicker itself, despite the brilliant moniker, but they can definitely craft out a good reputation as a live band, one which perfectly opens a show and gets everyone in the right frame of mind. Doom Metal Front Streaming New Compilation

German doom metal magazine Doom Metal Front, now on its tenth print issue as well, is streaming the newest and eighth of its renowned compilations. The anthology, titled "Tears from the Mediterranean," features 50 bands from southern European countries and Mediterranean island nations such as Malta. You may also stream the previous five compilations on that page and listen to the full tome below.

Doom Metal Front is an independent, bilingual (German/English), printed and digital paper spreading the doom over the world. They prefer sluggish riffing, slow rocking and experimental droning stuff, because they are 'born too late.' They ascribe to the belief that 'if you think this music is kind of paralyzing, then you are definitely too fast.'
